Is Intel advertising to kids??

Schools have changed a lot since 1996. But Intel has stayed inside the curriculum. Can they be trusted to teach kids about electronics engineering and computers, or are they feeding them product placement?

I forgot all about this. We used this when I was at school ... TBH I don't remember any of it haha.

I think it's vitally important to teach the older generation about computers. My grandparents don't even know what a word processor is. They can't use any of the digital services.

To check the charge state of a battery, one can't really measure it with a modern multimeter. Since the multimeter is effectively an open circuit.
Even a more or less completely dead battery will still get up to about the same voltage as a fresh one, until one loads it down and sees that it actually can't provide any useful power. The load however often doesn't have to be huge, a few K ohm is low enough. (unlike the multimeter that is 10 million ohms or more.)

But interesting to see what Intel did back then.

Even if they partly still does do similar things today, AMD too for that matter. A surprising amount of companies in the tech sector do have rather large discounts to get their products into schools.

Back at my school we had a whooping 6 or 7 (networked) Apple_II_e.

Not the hottest tech back then but also still kinda current. And of course all just for extra curriculum classes otherwise we barely got taught how electricity works.

It got to the other extreme when I entered trade school were we had a CAD room with some HP workstations and gigantic monitors (21" CRT...) each seat was worth about 40000DM. Some kind of deal with local industry who would use the room in the afternoons.

Ermmmm, yeah I am that old......

Fantastic video!

Is there any chance of you uploading the scans of the Teacher's Guide? I'm really curious to really dive deep in how Intel explained all in the mid '90s

Maybe even think of uploading it to the Interrnet Archive!

I still remember one of my high school teachers picking up the glass panel off the overhead projector and shattering it on the students desk who was in front of him because he wouldn't stop misbehaving. Hilarious.

In all fairness, is it really considered predicting the future when you're the ones trying to make it happen?

Anyways, if we ever get more funding to schools I'd love to see this type of stuff again in middle schools.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Best LTT video ever.

In 1996 i was a little kid and too young for computers.

Just like a lot of people back then we only had one computer in the household and no internet connection.

My first time on a computer was in 1997~1998,

I remember playing games like Hercules,Aladdin,3D Pets - PC Pup and more

but yes, it's weird how much things have changed since then. Also how phones changed in usage and more so the data collection to other cases... some very horrible today (needing apps for 100 of things and accept everything they want). *cue EULA take my kidney*

It's so funny to me that Anthony is talking about overhead projectors like they went the way of the floppy disc when I remember some teachers using this in high school when I graduated in 2015 lmao. Really speaks volumes about how poorly funded some schools are (or how set in their ways tenured teachers from the 80s are).

Hell, even in my graduate program one of the more ancient professors was asking if he could set up an overhead projector in one of the lecture halls so he could give a talk. IT just looked at him like he suggested that we eat a baby.

It's entirely possible that I misinterpreted/misread your topic and/or question. This happens more often than I care to admit. Apologies in advance.

Feeling old eh? Go back even further to 1990 and take an Amiga 3000 for a test drive - it blew the doors off the PC. In fact, the Amiga WAS the ultimate gaming machine for it's time.

These teaching aids were as antiquated as could be even back in the day. When you were a kid in school in the 80's you had a Commodore 64, or if you were a well-off kid your parents got you an Amiga. What's funny is the IBM JX machines my school bought were a dinosaur compared to the stuff you could do with the Amiga - I was already doing full color WYSIWYG desktop publishing at home when these things didn't even have a word processor, could only do monochrome and easily cost 2.5x to 3x the price.

As for magazines, go dig up some AmigaWorld copies - I still have all of mine 😎

While the Amiga was the ultimate gaming machine, an A3000 was mostly useless for that purpose. No way to switch it back to a stock 68000 for older hardcoded games but also no AGA for the later stuff.

I don't even think this is all about funding though, I've seen them get used while projecting on a smartboard. It's a simple technique, but can be very pleasant to work on for teachers.

It's about funding in some schools. But yeah, some instructors/professors are set in their ways.

A lot more justifiable if you have been teaching a class from the same set of transparencies for decades.
