What is the most expensive thing you ever bought for your girlfriend or soon to be girlfriend?

I know some people say it's bad to start off with money and buying her stuff, but sometimes you just can't help it and just want to see her happy. I kind of want to see different perspective here, but yea... What's the most expensive thing you ever bought for your woman?

 

Mine was a purse that cost $2,150

I bought my ex a horse when we were together. Cost $7000.

Well my wife had a really picky kind to her. An excellent or excuisite taste, really nice not fun to make here, but some thing were quite out of our range =) 

 

So what I gave her, without wanting anything in return, was a cozy home, with enough time to get back to health with her back problems. 

Else we had a kind of deal, due to me once buying her some rings, getting her size naild down perfectly, she asked me if I was nuts... she wouldn't wear such "bling" and put htem away, wearing only the plainest one every now and then, so every time she managed to leave me dumb foundet she got 10 € from me. 

 

To be honest, she made a big income due to that ^^ From this (I think 1000€ per year were in it no problem) she treated herself and put the rest aside.

I will start this off with I spoil my fiancee and she hates it. It makes her happy, but getting gifts makes her uncomfortable. Even getting her flowers "I'm spending too much on her".

It's okay to buy gifts to make them happy, but with the price on the purse(and I know this wasn't the meaning of the thread), if that's the only way to make her "happy" that's a huge warning sign. 

On topic, her laptop broke when the cat spilled some water on it. She was going to save up, so I got her a new laptop. About 14,000 NOK. When we went to get wedding rings, it was a struggle to get her to let me spend $900 on the wedding and engagement ring.(That was bought in the states)

This is kind of how i feel. if i want something i will generally buy it with my own money. i don't like getting gifts from other people, and yes that includes my partner.

I don't like the mentality of "i have to buy things for my girlfriend/boyfriend/significant other to make them happy".

Soon to be girlfriend? Please tell me you didn't try to convince someone to be romantically involved with you by bribing them with expensive gifts.

 

Anyway, I don't keep a list because I don't count the amount of money I spend on my partner, but probably the most expensive thing I bought for her was a nice, big aquarium with all the necessary gadgets and decorations to make her pet turtle happy, since it didn't have a ton of space at her parents' place. I don't like making silly grand gestures around presents and when I buy her something, it's usually stuff that I know she'd like but also could have a laugh about. Like that one time where she expressed a desire for a large cylindrical pillow, which I fulfilled by buying her a giant plush penis.

If a relationship relies on expensive gifts to make one of the partners happy, then it's bound to fail.

 

I'm personally a fan of the "no gifts" rule.

 

Of course sometimes a small gesture is nice to show you care about someone, but it's not really something to keep count on or make a competition out of imo.

A $25 gift card for whatever wine she wanted to get on Christmas at the local SAQ (liquor stores in QC) where she went all the time

(gave it a week before xmas, didn't spend it together, even though she said she'd come over the next day... she didn't and didn't hear from her until after new year when she needed something... Yeah... I should've cut her off then, so many red flags, why didn't I see them)
 

We were "just friends" at the time (in quotation because last I check, friends don't just make out with one another, even if it was just a few times weeks prior).

Then we actually got together 2 months later and she decided to dump me via text after 6 weeks in april of 2020, to go back with her ex whom she realized after being with me that she still oh so much loved, even though she kept telling me how annoying he was and would never shut up. (this was at the beginning of Covid, so the anxiety of the virus and all that probably didn't help with the situation).

 

Only saw her once since then, and by "saw" I mean she was physically there, we greeted one another and I couldn't bring myself to look at her. Pain. I think she lost some weight? I dunno (I didn't even look at her face, much less her body), I was staring off in the distance behind her. The meeting lasted about a minutes before she excused herself.

So yeah... at least I didn't spend too much on her and gained a valuable lesson about women.

-Independent financial stability is a requirement

-Time spent with a person (undivided attention) should be seen as more valuable than monetary gifts

-A savvy significant other will ask for minimal-cost gifts (<$100)--if anything

-^ As an addendum to this, if the party in question asks to spend significant money on a gift--said significant other will ask for something sensible like a Roth IRA contribution--not bling

I've been married probably longer than you've been alive--and COMBINED, I don't think my wife has ever spent $2150 on all the purses she's had since we've been together.  Stop Simping.  A good partner would be asking you to save your money for a down payment on a house or something.

Lol my wife (then fiancé) and I went to the store and picked out our rings together. Spent like $200 total, she bought mine and I bought hers (for literally no reason because our finances are shared). Why spend any more than that on a symbol?

 

Like @IPDsaid, I'd much rather max out our ROTH IRAs lol.
