Please note that the preview is not an indication of what the general release might require.

Microsoft have specifically said that the preview will have more relaxed system requirements than the release. If you are running the insider build on a computer that do not meet the hardware requirements, then you will get stuck on the last preview build and you will not be able to upgrade to the general release. You will have to reformat your PC and go back to Windows 10.

Quote

We invite PCs that do not meet the new hardware requirements for Windows 11 to join the Release Preview Channel to preview updates for Windows 10.

Biting the bullet now. A laptop I thought I had a sale on has fallen through, and is the only non-critical PC I have that meets the Yellow Tier for testing. The only thing I'm below on is the CPU, which is Kaby Lake. I have two Green Tier systems but they're in daily use and I can't afford to mess around with them.

Just removed the existing disks and put in a clean one for Win10, which I'll then try to put on the dev channel after it sorts out existing updates. I'm even doing the opposite of what I normally do. Used online account (which will be required for Insider Program anyway) and said yes to all the data farming stuff. Let's try it closer to as MS intended.

I made an install USB with Rufus but then it told me i should disable secure boot… slightly confused after all that work, not sure i did something wrong… ? Cant test it right now I have to get an empty hard drive first.

Spoiler

i have to set it to "UEFI" "TPM" on and "secure boot" in BIOS before booting that Rufus win 11 iso, right?

Edit: i just saw your pinned thread… i knew i read it somewhere,  so no "secure boot" required… going to try that then.

im tempted to do the opposite, no TPM, secure boot, online account etc, even though i should fullfill "green tier requirements"… with my luck it'll be the only way to get it running anyways lol 🤷‍♂️

Im also kinda scared to leave my secondary drives in the pc, windows loves to put "app folders" and stuff there, or maybe otherwise mess the drives up (not sure)

For the record I've joined insider from a machine that had the leaked build installed and it's updating fine (got a dual boot with 10).

The earlier install went ok. I've not dug deep yet but so far it looks and feels like Win10 with a different skin. Maybe quad core is getting a bit low end for Windows. It was using >75% much of the time it was doing something (non-HT CPU).

Well something is definitely broken between 10 and 11.

Windows 10 says my device meets requirements for enhanced security:

Current Windows 11 build says I don't even meet standard security requirements:

Well 11's requirements may differ, the checks / menu entries in 11 not be implemented yet etc... BTW you still have the old Settings app in 11, so might have changed already.

What does WhyNotWin11 say?

That says everything is fine so I assumed it's just broken, just more pointing it out than anything.

What do you mean old settings app? This is where windows 11 took me to for settings in the menu.

He is under the Windows Security application (aka: Windows Defender). It has not been updated yet.

Tonight, if I have time, I'll install Win11 on my SP3, which my only device with a TPM2 chip (beside my work system, which obviously won't be touched, until W11 is out for companies. I can't have any downtime on it), and see if I get the same.

Aaah yes.

Just checked it on 3 machines, they all say the same "not supported" there even on one with all greens. So most likely a case of "not implemented yet". Probably won't bother until there's a new app for that too...

Installed on my secondary laptop. Rolling back to W10. It's terrible. No right-click on the taskbar and a single panel for network/audio/battery is completely deal-breaking.

I even tried W7 recently and it felt so wrong not to have these...

This is not new. Windows 8 and 10 does it as well.

Microsoft has been using this feature to keep its Surface line products UEFI up to date.

It's a UEFI feature.

Easier than I thought. Turn *off* secure boot, which was on by default and youre ready to go!

but, few questions

- can i turn secure boot back on now?

- am i seeing this right, you have to download most Microsoft apps like paint etc from the store, so you need a Microsoft account after all? Or maybe not, i used to be able to download any free apps (except games) from store without a Microsoft account in win 10?

- bonus question, i dont have a win 10 pro key, this laptop came with home, how bad am i screwed or should most stuff still work ?
