Windows 11 - Insider Program - Master Thread

New Build - 22000.71

What's New?

  • Right-click menu now has acrylic material for its background:
    Context-Menus-Acrylic.png.26b2c6ed9e4292da6b0184e6efdbd071.png

  • Task Bar Thumbnail Preview (when you roll over a running program on the task bar), now has rounded corners:
    taskbar-preview.png.6b48716db0122732753a24395945ae8a.png

  • New Widget has been created. Called Entertainment, shows new and featured movie titles available in the Microsoft Store. Yay?!

What's Fixed?
A lot of fixes are present in this build. They might be other fixes not listed.

Quote
  • Taskbar:
    • We fixed an issue where if you drag app icons on the Taskbar to rearrange them, it was making the apps launch or minimize when you released the icon.
    • Using a long press with touch on an app icon in the Taskbar to open the jump list should now work.
    • After right-clicking the Start icon in the Taskbar, clicking somewhere else should now dismiss the menu more reliably.
    • Shift + Right-click on an app icon in the Taskbar will now bring up the window menu like it used to and not the jump list.
    • We’ve addressed an issue that was making your mouse move slowly when hovering over the Taskbar previews.
    • We’ve included the fix for an issue when using multiple Desktops where an app icon in the taskbar might give the appearance of multiple windows being open when that wasn’t the case on that Desktop.
    • When using the Amharic IME you should no longer see an unexpected X next to the IME icon in the taskbar.
    • The issue where if you click on the input indicator on the Taskbar and it would unexpectedly highlighted Quick Settings has been fixed.
    • When you hover over Task View, the preview flyout for your Desktops will no longer pop back up after using Esc to dismiss them.
    • We made a fix to address an issue where explorer.exe might crash after hovering over the Task View icon in the Taskbar.
    • We fixed an issue where the selected date in the calendar flyout was out of sync with the date in the Taskbar.
    • We made an update to address a scenario resulting in some Insiders not seeing the lunar calendar text in the calendar flyout when enabled in Settings.
    • This flight addressed an issue that could unexpectedly make the Taskbar background transparent.
    • Right-clicking the focus assist icon in the taskbar should now show a context menu.
    • The issue from the previous flight where icons in the taskbar corner were getting crushed against the top of the Taskbar has been addressed.
    • The tooltip for the location in use icon in the Taskbar should no longer appear blank sometimes.
  • Settings:
    • We fixed an issue making Settings crash on launch periodically.
    • Using the volume mixer sliders in Sound Settings should be more responsive now, as well as the page responsiveness as a whole.
    • We fixed an issue resulting in Disk and Volumes Settings’ change size option being clipped.
    • There was a non-functional verify link under Backup Settings – this has been fixed.
    • The Power and Battery Settings page should no longer be reporting that battery saver is engaged in it’s not.
    • The Power and Battery Settings page should also now not crash when launched from Quick Settings.
    • We fixed a grammatical error in the Sign-in Settings text.
    • The “I forgot my PIN” link was unexpectedly missing in Sign-in Settings when a PIN was set up and has now been returned.
    • The issue where the Move option under Apps & Features in Settings wasn’t working reliably should be addressed in this build.
    • We’ve mitigated a problem where some of the colors in Settings weren’t updating after switching between dark and light mode, leaving unreadable text.
    • We’ve done some work to help improve the performance of Settings when switching between light and dark mode.
    • We addressed an issue where some of the elements of the Themes page in Settings would end up crowded together when the window size was small.
    • We resolved an issue where the Pen menu toggle under Taskbar Settings was not in sync with the actual state of the feature.
    • Changes made to “Dismiss notification after this amount of time” in Accessibility Settings should now persist.
    • Some of the icons you could enable in Taskbar Settings were erroneously labeled Windows Explorer even though that’s not what they were – this should now be fixed.
    • The Connect text in Quick Settings has been updated to say Cast.
  • File Explorer:
    • Clicking the command bar button twice should now close any dropdown that appeared.
    • The new command bar should now appear when “Open folders in a separate process” is enabled under File Explorer Options > View.
    • This build addresses an issue where right clicking a file and selecting Open With > Choose another app might launch the file in the default app rather than opening the Open With dialog.
    • Fixed an issue the desktop and File Explorer context menu would stop launching.
  • Search:
    • We fixed an issue where the option to verify your account in Search wasn’t working.
    • Hovering over the Search icon on a secondary monitor will now show the flyout on the correct monitor.
    • Search should now work if you open Start and start typing after having gone to the apps list and back.
  • Widgets:
    • When using the Outlook client with a Microsoft account, Calendar, and To Do updates should sync faster down to the widgets.
    • We addressed an issue where if you added multiple widgets quickly from the widgets settings, it could result in some of the widgets not being visible on the board.
    • We fixed a bug where widgets could all become stuck in a loading state (blank squares in the window).
    • The traffic widget should now follow the Windows mode (light or dark).
    • The title of the sports widget should no longer mismatch with the content of the widget.
  • Other:
    • This build addresses an issue where ALT + Tab was getting stuck open sometimes after you released the keys and had to be manually dismissed.
    • We made a fix for an issue where Narrator focus wasn’t ending up on the emoji panel after using the keyboard shortcut to open it.
    • Magnifier’s lens view has been updated so the lens now has rounded corners.
    • We found an issue that was noticeably impacting Start launch reliability for some Insiders and have addressed it with this flight.
    • We’ve updated the “Most Used” text in the Start menu’s app list so it should no longer be getting clipped.
    • Using the semantic zoom in Start’s app list should no longer result in the list being pushed down and to the right off the edge of the window.
    • We fixed an issue where if you pressed WIN + Z you would need to press Tab before you could use the arrow key to navigate through the snap layouts.
    • We addressed an issue where an acrylic area could get left on the screen after repeatedly snapping and unsnapping a window with touch.
    • We’ve done some work to mitigate an unexpected flash when moving a snapped window with touch.
    • We made a change to help window borders have a little more contrast when “Show accent color on title bars and windows borders” was turned off.

Notable Known Issues

  • There is an issue in this build where Explorer.exe will crash when the date and time button on the Taskbar is clicked to access new notifications with Focus Assist turned off. The workaround for this is to enable Focus assist to priority or alarms mode.

  • Reset this PC and Go back buttons in Settings > System > Recovery do not function.

  • Device Security is unexpectedly saying “Standard hardware security not supported” for Insiders with supported hardware.

  • Clicking a desktop icon or context menu entry may result in the wrong item being selected.

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to get help with my problem, but I'll try anyway.

I am currently facing an issue where any program being opened on top of a window displaying video footage (Youtube, video games, etc..) becomes transparent and makes it very hard to see content properly, happens also with the search and Windows bars from taskbar. I am currently on Windows 11 build 22000.71, I am using an MSI GE76 Raider 10UG (i7-10750H, RTX 3070, 32Gb Corsair RAM, 1TB SSD) and have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling both my Intel and Nvidia graphics drivers to no avail. When I try to take a screenshot it only shows the intented window and not the one transparent over it. I have also looked into every transparency effect in the settings and nothing changes it.

I couldn't find anybody else with this issue so any help would be useful!

If you play your game in full screen mode and not windowed mode, does your problem persist?

Yes, on the picture I was actually in full screen, but alt+tabbed to GeForce Experience hence why we can see the taskbar.

Finally found the fix! All I had to do was comletely uninstall my Intel graphics drivers and let Nvidia do all the work.

😄 Awesome! It didn't cross my mind about the activation. So basic, I just didn't expect that!

Glad you can now join the program!

I am trying to think on what happened. And I think I can guess, or at least be close to the actual issue.

So for switchable graphics, the way it works (for current methods with Nvidia/Intel solutions), is that the Nvidia GPU renders the heavy work, and for each frame rendered, instead of outputting the image on your screen, as the display is not connected to it, the drive transfers the frame to the Intel integrated graphics frame buffer, and make the Intel graphic solution fooled that it did work, and output it to the screen. Yes, it is a hack. But supported by Intel and of course Nvidia who is working with OEM manufacturers to make it possible.

So, it looks like, for some reason 2 frames, the one from the Nvidia GPU and Intel merges together and overlays itself in some strange fashion. Probably the Intel integrated graphics frame buffer wasn't cleared when the Nvidia GPU driver dropped the rendered frame to it. Or, both were rendering, just intel handling the desktop, and Nvidia the game (as the driver routes the game calls to the GPU) and both are mixing the rendered frame.

Anyway, definitely some driver issue.

So, this seems "not right" to say the least. As far as I know I'm in the Dev channel but somehow it just showed up to allow me to click Release Preview instead?

Well, what did you do to join? Where you on the leaked build and upgraded? Clean install?

This is what I have. IN my case I was on Windows 10 Insider preview and jump to Windows 11 Insider Preview:

This is what I have. I was on Windows 10 Insider preview and jump to Windows 11 Insider Preview:

I joined the Dev Channel a few weeks ago when 11 launched. No leaked build, all official updates.

So, I have 2 ideas:

  1. Optional diagnostic data was disabled. Enable it back and restart your system. It should fix this.
  2. Your system, like mine, doesn't meet Windows 11 system requirement and you have left the Insider program, so you are out, despite running Windows 11 currently. OR you missed the window open for unsupported hardware and this is how Microsoft rejects users. You are kinda stuck in this Windows 11 build but can't go further.... but that is just a guess. I doubt that would happen, but this is all in development beta, so probably something borked and got you into this state... I am just guessing here. Sorry 😕

Yah, I tried a reboot and haven't done anything to mess with diagnostic data and it still says I'm in the release preview. Everything says I'm fully able to run the Windows 11 build (when the Microsoft checker was around) and the WhyNotWin11 checker both said I was fully capable. I'm going to leave it there and see what happens, I still have the radial button to go to Dev Channel, I'll see what happens moving forward 🙂

I noticed opening settings and closing a couple times gave me different results, a few times it was blue, like shown, another few times it was grayed out and all I could do was select Dev channel but didn't click it yet.

Hello

I installed Windows 11 about two weeks ago and everything is working  great apart of Start Menu.

When I press Windows Button in windows or on Keyboard, nothing happens.

Search works great, just no Start Menu.

Anyone have any idea how to fix it?

So I installed the Windows 11 isnider preview yesterday, and I've found a few problems here and there.

Jsyk, I'm running it on a Pentium P6200 with 6GB ram, without a TPM and SecureBoot, and on a Legacy system.

To install the insider preview, I made a Win11 ISO with UUPdump, and replaced the install.esd file in a
Windows 10 ISO with the install.esd from the Windows 11 ISO; which bypassed the security requirement.

Windows 11 installed just fine, and all my apps are running fine.

But the OS feels a little bit sluggish in general, maybe because of the improved GUI that's more GPU dependant
or maybe because the OS isn't properly optimized yet.

Oh and Windows 10 ran perfectly on my 10y/o hardware.

So when I type in notepad, if I type fast, the letters lag a little bit on the screen; if I use the arrow
keys to navigate explorer, the highlighted files lag a little bit.

Widgets aren't working for me. It's just a blank hazy panel; I've tried the recommended fixes, including
disabling and enabling it again in gpedit and all but it doesn't work.

Windows security shows a blank page, and restarting some services don't do anything.

Whenever I try to start the security service, it says 'Security service started on local machine and then
stopped'.

And the biggest of them all: right clicking on any file or folder crashes explorer.

I've tried sfc /scannow and some other things I found on forums, but I can't fix this.

Apparenty people faced these problems in Windows 10 as well, but I didn't have them, and the problems only
showed up when I upgraded to Windows 11.

Is this just my PC or are other people having these problems as well?

The OS looks a little bit more aesthetically pleasing; the rounded corners look great overall, and the
settings menu looks wayyy better.

The transparency effects are a nice touch.

I just hope that Microsoft breaks out of their bad/good/bad/good release cycle and Windows 11 turns out
to be great when it's finally released.

P.S: I realise that this is an Insier Preview and not a final release and I realise that I'm running it on
hardware that's very much unsupported. I just wanted to say the things that I've noticed using Windows 11 for
some time now.

I've installed it on an older CPU and didn't have issues, but with a more modern GPU. Most likely the integrated graphics lack support for some features used by the new UI...

Yup. This is because of the new security features that the OS uses. Right now, as your CPU doesn't have the hardware integrated inside it to accelerate the process, you are having a performance impact.  So, if you have a modern CPU, you'll notice no performance degradation in the OS responsiveness or just a minor one. But on CPUs that don't have this technology, the performance drop is notable as you have noticed.

This is why Windows 11 required 8th gen CPU or Zen 2 based CPUs, as these CPUs have the hardware acceleration (if you will) of these security features.

This is also why they are now monitoring the performance of the 7th gen CPU and Zen 1 CPUs, as they don't have the needed hardware, but these CPUs are still quite fast, so it might be OK.

So, it has nothing to do with Windows 11 being "bloated" or "unoptimized", which is exactly why Microsoft is putting their foot down on the minimum CPU. They are avoiding a Vista. Where at the time, you needed a pretty high-end, modern system to run it fine. But most didn't, and OEMs also didn't sale really compatible systems. So people went "Well XP ran great! Vista runs terrible... Vista is a bloated mess".... well 3 years later once hardware catches up people went "Wooow Windows 7! So nice!"... but the experience has not actually really changed from Vista. If you install Vista on your Win7 system, it will run just as good as Win7.

I think it will be great OS. Just the focus for Microsoft is on modern systems. I won't be surprised if they are only doing limited testing or just stopped all together on older systems.

So basically, yea, it's Windows, and there is always a way to install Windows on unsupported hardware. Microsoft never put much effort in really blocking thing most of the time. I suspect the same, but now, Microsoft can come out and say "Well, you are not running the OS on supported hardware, so you are on your own. Sorry!".

Chat from Microsoft Teams begins rolling out

MicrosoftTeams-image-4.png

Next time you restart your system, you may notice a new icon on the task bar.

Microsoft has been enabling the flag on Insiders to start enjoying the new "Chat" app from Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft Teams is best known as an office meeting tool; however, Microsoft has been expanding it to consumers by offering it for free for them.

While Microsoft has not commented on this, it is clear that Microsoft, in my opinion, aims to replace Skype with it.

When you use the Chat app, it installs (for the first time) and launches the new Microsoft Teams application. This new version of the application uses a new framework which is much lighter on system resources and more responsive than the current Microsoft Teams. That said, it is in alpha it lacks A LOT of options that Microsoft Teams current version has. You can't do an audio or video chat... it is THAT basic.

To read more about it:

I believe this has been speculated on a few times now, to replace skype with teams.
