What would you have changed about your first build?

Bad@Gaming

For first builds most people don't know a lot about computers (but enough to choose relatively good hardware and how to actually build it). So if you could re-do your first build over again, what would you change?

Specs of my first (and only):

i5-3570k

asus Z77-A

Sapphire radeon HD 7870 Ghz

Kingston hyperx 3k 120GB SSD.

Corsair CX600

The rest of the hardware was given to me by a friend who no longer had need of it (8GB's G.Skill DDR3-1600 RAM, windows 7 64, DVD drive, case)

Things I would change:

-CX600M instead of CX600. It's virtually no extra cost and it didn't even cross my mind.

-GTX 760 instead of 7870. I play crysis now and a GTX 760 handles crysis almost 2x better than a 7870 despite being around the same cost (I'd have forked out some extra cash).

-Samsung 840 evo instead of hyperX 3k. I got sucked into the, "up to 5xx read/write" scam and my read rate is like 350 Mb/s and write 1xx Mb/s.

-This is still something I can do, but it's something that I should have done initially because the PSU was my first part. I would have individually sleeved the cables for best looks/flexability.

Intel core i5-3570k @ 3.4 GHz - Sapphire Radeon HD7870 Ghz OC Ed 1050/1250 - Kingston HyperX 3k 120GB SSD - G.Skill 8 GB's DDR3-1600 MHz

Asus Z77-A mobo - Windows 7 64 bit - Corsair raptor HS30 headset - Corsair CX600 600w PSU - CM hyper 212 EVO CPU cooler

It can run crysis.

Well, I just build my new pc this saturday, so can't really say I wanted something changed about it, as I used all my money on it. xD

Hmm.. After thinking a bit..
There's the little detail that 1 front fan can't be adjusted, and it spins really slowly and makes a ticking sound, but when I listen to music I don't notice it.
I Wish I purchased some AF 120/140's for my 450D front fans maybe ?
Other than that, I like my build alot, Sadly it took me 6 hours to finish xD (First Timer)

Change my Bitfenix Colossus for a simpler looking case.

Change basic Samsung RAM to something that looks a bit nicer

Change my ugly motherboard, (brown PCB and blue heatsinks)

In my first build I would have gone with a better case, it was a rosewill challenger, and in all honesty a complete POS.  I also bought an unlocked processor (which I may or may not have known at the time) and I've never OC'd it. I do plan on setting up a watercooling loop this summer, so I'll OC it then (it's a 2500K).

Those would be my 2 biggest changes I would make.

Presently the only regret I have is buying the Corsair 900D, completely overpriced and terrible build quality and terrible quality control.

Gone for a motherboard with better power phase because I didn't think I wanted to overclock back then. Also I may have gone intel instead.

CPU: AMD FX-8350 | CPU Cooler: H80i | Motherboard: Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 | RAM: 8GB Kingston Beast 1866MHz

Case: Define R4 | GPU: Gigabyte GTX 780ti | PSU: Corsair CX600M | SSD: 250GB Samsung 840 EVO

.... and a Partridge in a pear tree!

I would've gone for EVGA instead of Gigabyte, because I like the cooler design and due it's support. Also maybe another, bigger, prettier case than this antec 302

Motherboard. A nice ASUS was like $10 more, and I didn't get it. Then I would have gotten 750Ti, had it been released at the time.

Interesting.

A lot of people are saying they would have gotten a better case. Including myself. The case was my friends older case (I think he upgraded for the same reason lol). It was the antec sonata III. Don't ever. Ever. buy this.

For $120 you can get a better case and a better PSU combined.

antec says it has support for 2 case fans (one exhaust and one for HDD cooling). I went to install a second and found that for whatever reason antec decided to put different sized screw holes for the optional fan HDD fan. Why? Why on earth would you do this to me antec?

Since I can only use one exhaust fan which is pulling all the hot air in my case past the CPU, I'm going to upgrade to a CM haf 912 and use the optional 200mm's for front and top, a side exhaust to keep my GPU heat from wafting up towards my CPU, and then have my hyper 212 exhaust in push/pull/pull through the back (stock fan for push, jetflo 120 for pull, then another rear exhaust to help it get out.

Cant say much about my first pc as I hardly rembember what I put in it. But as for my most recent system (first one I built in probably 7 years so I was out of the loop) I would probably get some faster ram, though I dont think faster ram would be that big of an improvement anyways. At least on my rig.

Pleb.

Anyway i would have bought:

3930K instead of a 3770K

Would have gotten a much better Motherboard

Would have actually saved for a decent GPU rather than jumping around from GPU to GPU.

Would have gone 2560x1440 right away

not screwed around with cases. Litterally i've had 3 cases and the build isn't even done. Went from Rosewill Thor V2 White to NZXT Phantom to 900D

Would have done more research to save money rather than fuck around and waste all my money. Probably wasted over 1000 on this build.

Yeah... I done goofed.

Literally almost like everything, I shouldn't limit my budget so low at that time.

3570K instead of 3350P

Buying CM 212 Evo for cooling

AsRock Z77 Pro 3/4 upto Extreme 3 instead of some cheap MoBo

CX600M for my PSU

Getting 760 or 7950 for my GPU

Getting some better case

A 3570k over an FX-8350.

An overclockable chipset, or one that could OC better.

A bigger, more quality PSU.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.
