WAN SHOW: Browser Tab Addiction REVEALED! Solutions NEEDED!

I was watching a WAN show and Luke revealed he and @LinusTech are a bit of tab junkies.  I too have this affliction....and since Firefox went QUANTUM!!!!! leaving TabMixPlus and it's wonderful orderly, multirow, tab layout design behind, I've been looking for a solution.

 

I wonder what Luke, Linus, and any other LTT forum denizen might use to keep their tabs, if not in check, usable...

 

EDIT: From the intial few responses, I'm getting people also confessing their tab habits.   That's good and all.. we're a community and people should share, but WHAT I'm looking for is, _I_ find the One row of tabs, heading out to the right of the screen off to infinity just AWFUL to use.  Tab Mix Plus's ability to make multiple rows of tabs that you could see at once.. or have a limit of like 3 displayed then scroll throw the rows... to be very useful... AS WELL AS actually following the visual metaphor of tabs, unlike just a single row.  

 

HAS, in the years since QUANTUM made TabMixPlus broken, found a good solution...or.. what if your solution, or do you just use the infiinite single row?

nothing new. Linus and Luke have mentioned for years they often had 30+ per window with 3-5 windows open at a time.
I tend to run 30-60 tabs open at a time, with school using talking the most, when schools over its 15-30

I, too, love tabs. So much so, that I need to upgrade to 32GB of RAM.

Not sure how I feel about that stacked tab layout though. Looks. Cluttered.

and i get uncomfortable if i have more than 10 tabs open, i utilise the "close all tabs to the right" way too much

ok.. I wasn't really wanting to discuss tab habbits so much as TAB SOLUTIONS......I shall do some edits...

I find it very good at a glance... these are pics I found online because that was easier than making my own more forum friendly:)  

One of the nice things is you can make it auto color code things, by tab and text color, for loaded tabs, unread, or active tab to quickly ID things.,

never been one  to use a tool to organize tabs, I tend to not get more than 20 in a window and I use virtual desktops heavily to keep windows separated

rare times where I got more is after a trip and I got a bunch of videos I want to watch, but then I don't care, I set the order and go through them, I don't jump around the tabs

I run into this with my phone. It starts getting bogged down and then I realize there are 35 tabs open. I usually try to go through tabs at the the top of each hour to cut down on runaway tab use.

Split things into individual windows more. And if your window management gets too cluttered, Windows 10/11 nowadays has virtual desktops.

When I built my new rig I joked to my then DnD group that I finally had enough RAM to keep all the Wiki and Spell pages open on my DnD profile...

 

Speaking of, I've found that Profiles are a really good way to manage tabs. I have one for Work and Play, and before I left my DnD group because of time, I had one for all the crap that I have to keep open for that too. It's lilke splitting things off into multiple windows, but you can fire them all up at the same time as the separate profile with relative ease.

I just keep everything I open often in a bookmark folder, in the easily accessible side panel of Vivaldi. One click, everything opens up, I check whats new, close each tab as I go, reopen them later if and when I want to.

Literally no reason to be a tab hoarder.

 

But yes, Linus and Luke both have a tab problem and they need help.

I don't often have nearly that many tabs open, but I've taken to using the Simple Tab Groups extension on Firefox. It's basically a substitute for having multiple windows open. Easier to move tabs around than multiple windows, uses less resources than multiple windows, compatible with Firefox's resume on startup, and keeps backups of the tab groups if for some reason I ever do lose my tabs.

Hmmm interesting. Maybe I'll have to try it out sometime. I've never been a huge fan of browser extensions though.

it works with old versions of firefox...or I use WaterFox....but the problem is when Firefox when chromium, it killed this (and many other good extensions) so I'm trying to find a replacement, thus this thread

I use Vivaldi, so can stack tabs together.

When a stack is selected, the tabs in it is showed as a second tab bar.

Can make them however you want to.

 

That said, I am not as bad as Linus, I have maybe 10-20 tabs open I think?

Tab stacking was in Opera 12 on another level. Recently they added the two rows but still in Opera it was in one row and you could just minimize or show them with a single click.

You can have it show in one row with expand and minimize in Vivaldi of you want to. (Called Accordion) I just prefer it being a second row.

 

Or there is a compact mode that was the standard before but I dont like it as much. (It works that you hold over the stack, then a drop-down comes up you can click on the one you want and then it vanishes)

TLDR; as a fellow tabs hoarder (and multiple browser window hoarder), the latest solution for me was Tab Groups in the latest Safari. Also a habit of always opening a new window/tabGroup for any topic, breaking down (big) groups into more specialized, trying to avoid random tabs in the same window/group.

 

I believe Chrome has smth similar, Firefox has Simple Tab Groups.

As someone who's becoming more and more of a tab hoarder I've started to use a browser extension called OneTab. I'm not entirely sure what their business model is because it's not immediately apparent but essentially you can send tabs to the extension to be saved for later either one a time or sending every tab to the extension and closing the tabs.

 

It then locally keeps a list of all the groups of tabs you've saved and let's you re-open the tabs at a later date.

 

I don't know if this would work as a solution for the OP or others affected by having tons of tabs. More broadly speaking I would suggest trying different browser extensions to see if they work for you and if they do then potentially adopting them. I have no affiliation with OneTab or any other browser extension provider, I'm just describing what I use in the hopes it may help others.

I mean, Marie Kondo would tell me to just shut all those since clearly I don't need to hold on to them...but one day...ONE DAY....I might get around to them!!!!

When my tabs are too much, I use multiple windows and then I use multiple tabs again until that window has too many tabs.
