Best antivirus?

brownninja97

MATE, I don't want to be rude either, but I NEVER said, that my or any other computer is invulnerable to malware.

Still there is much much much much much more malware for Windows, then there is for Mac.

And the (known) malware for Mac is in most cases really harmless.

Also it is much harder to do harm, as the user has to enter his admin password before a malicious software can do anything meaningful.

If you are a user who only uses programs from stores like the App store, steam or trusted websites like adobe and don't blindly trust any popups in your browser it is almost impossible to catch any malware. (This can't be said for Windows)

"(This can't be said for Windows)" What you just said is something we call common sense. So you are wrong, the same thing can be said for Windows.

true, because malware for mac has the same effects as for Windows.  Sure, you need to enter in your password before running malware on OSX but you have UAC on Windows.  Because there are ransomware for OSX, which will prevent you from browsing the internet, changing any settings in your browser.  Also, malware these days are the same for all platforms, they are designed for financial gain and whether its on Android, OSX or Windows there will always be ransomware, Trojans and exploits.

Common sense is all you need. If you're lacking in this department, get ad block and no script. There's no need to spend money on software that sucks resources like an expensive gold digger.

i use 3 scanners.

  1. Avira antivir Free
  2. Spybot S&D
  3. Malwarebytes anti malware

2 times a week i run all those 3 scans at the same time.

I never had any issues with virusses or crap.

Also good free viruscanners are AVG and Avast.

I use my SSD as my main C-drive, i only have Windows, and installed program´s on it.

No personal data or what so ever.

So clean installs are quickly and easaly to do for me. without concerning of data los.

Greetings everyone, nowadays everyone seems to have at least a Free AV installed on their computers. From my personal experience, I have never encountered any other virus/Trojan since the one I had on my old HP Laptop back in 2009-2010.

- Right now, I am using Avast Pro (365 days subscription) but I feel like I am wasting my money each time because I never get alerts of detected virus and I  never visit dark websites (Good guy Chrome warns me and blocks me from accessing it before it's too late).

- I have visited a lot of forums and comparison blogs but I never had a True Single answer for "My" needs. (I can pay for an AV only if the extra features are really worth it)

This is what I mostly do with my Computer:
- I play video games from steam/origin;
- I watch YouTube, go on Facebook/twitter/9gag/forums and emails (gmail + Yahoomail);
- I watch some movies and anime;
- I do my homework and work on it too.

My general knowledge:

  • I heard BitDefender is a good choice but the UI is not user-friendly and it's power hungry;
  • KasperSky is 50/50, when it works it's good but when it doesn't... well it doesn't at all;
  • Avast is annoying and apart from always updating it never seems in action...(good or not?);
  • Windows Defender could be a good choice but it doesn't detect a lot of viruses (is it important?);
  • I never used McAfee or Norton (you know why ;] );

I hope everything is clear! Don't hesitate to leave suggestions and/or correct me if something is wrong or if you notice any grammatical mistakes! (English isn't my native language)

Thank you for reading!

Best Regards,
Boutchoo

Also, based upon what you do on your rig, you don't need one.

If your not doing some stuff that would have virues or malware then you don't need one, you can just use malwarebytes, or just get AVG free anti virus and malwarebytes

Just get free malwarebytes, and you don't need any other antivirus.

I never use antivirus. I think it takes up unnecessary resources on your system. I've never had any problems for over 2 years on my rig.

Even I visit some pretty sketchy websites sometimes, but just use common sense and you'll be fine.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

This is all I ever use. MSE is preinstalled on windows 8 and can be downloaded for free on 7. I've seen Malwarebytes detect malicious things that other anti malware software couldn't. I always recommend these 2 programs to anyone.

Edit: you will have to manually scan your pc with them at your discretion. They won't automatically scan or scan programs you're installing on the fly. I always update and run MSE & Malewarebytes once a week.

You don't really NEED an anti-virus IF you stay off the "red light district" of the internet but I would still advise that you do, because you never know, avast free is pretty good, I have it all you do is miss out on some useless features so yeah, get that.
