What's a tech term you hate?

yeah, usually followed by "i have seen it on youtube".

What i really hate about it, it usually leads to nothing , you can explain a million times "not every system is the same" ... "no ive seen it on youtube, exactly the same" (and usually it isnt exactly the same of course lol)

so mainly its just the misuse of the term?
i have seen some people with cpus that are like half perf though, which is definitly under preforming

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

But in Calibri... :old-sad:

has the red box though.  close enough for people that won’t go anywhere near supreme anyway.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

This sort of thing came to mind as one possible as to why.  there’s probably even more awful stuff.  There was some very very bad 70’s country from the CB era that may not even be on YouTube any more.  This is pretty bad though.

Not sure if it counts, but it's people calling any kind of internet access "Wi-Fi" for me. It's much more widespread than I thought...

I work at an ISP and literally all of my customers refer to all internet as Wi-Fi. It drives me insane every single day of my life. They all come in saying they want to buy Wi-fi...

Obsolete.  If it can still be used, do the work, or be used as a learning tool, then it's not obsolete.  If it's still useful, then it's not obsolete by definition.

CPU: Ryzen 5900X | GPU: ASRock 6900XT | Drive: SAMSUNG 980 PRO M.2 1TB (x2) | RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z Royal Series 64GB DDR4 3600 14-15-15-35 | MB: MSI MEG X570 GODLIKE | PSU: Corsair AX1600i | Cooling: Noctua NH-D15 + Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut | Case: Fractal Design Define 7

Yes, I share it with friends, and bought this at MSRP.  I was a listmaster for several days in NY.

I hate when someone saying "router" when in fact it was a switch or access point...

idk about you but, majority of people i know and some local YouTubers always saying it

People in my family use the word "router" to mean home Wi-Fi and use "Wi-Fi" to refer to internet (of any kind) elsewhere. It super annoying and makes no sense.

What is actually supposed to go here? Some people put their specs, others put random comments or remarks about themselves or others, and there are a few who put cryptic statements.

As a systems consultant, I hate it when laymen immediately leap to the "back end" like it's a magical bag that holds all the answers:

Ex: "This user cannot access the remittance package, can you check on the back end?"

No no no, it has nothing to do with the magical "back end," it's because this user needs a password reset.

I hate the term in general, especially when my team uses it in lieu of naming the specific stakeholders.

Ex: "When the customer downloads their general ledger reports, it's missing the Tax ID numbers. Why is this not populating?"
"Back end teams are working with card vendors to identify root cause and implement a fix."

It's not "back end teams" it's the app dev team. Stop perpetuating this annoying term.

I get that it can be confusing when you also speak finnish, but SATA stands for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment. Serial ATA is a followup to Parallel ATA which is also known as IDE.

Yeah, I know
Still hate it
You hit the point pretty well, because of the finnish language.
But at least for me, it is not really a big inconvenience.

Q: Which type of computer you have?
A: It has a i7 ...
Q: "stops you in mid sentence"

I mean, I am still using a haswell i7,so it counts. I used to run a OC 3370, but for some reason, the NVme boot did not work

That must have been a lot of years ago indeed.
I think I have never really had a PC, that would even have a IDE device.

Might be doing it not because they think they have the information but because they think they’re not going to get the information even if you finish the description.  Gaming computer, math computer, or casual computer.  You seem to be saying”I’m not going to tell you”. I’ll describe the hardware bits and let you decide” which they may not be equipped to do.  i7 bespeaks a minimum though which takes “casual” out of the equation even if it’s an old i7. It still hits a minimum which is above casual.  You’ve got at least 4 cores and at least 3.5 ghz.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

That could probably be found out.  Goes way way back though.  It would be what is now a historical figure. There used to be 300 baud modems the size of a suitcase.

"Future proof" has to be up there, together with "gaming" (or "gamer", same concept).

GNU/Linux just being called "Linux". Like boi, Linux is just a kernel. The full OS that most people use uses the GNU core utils on top of Linux.

If I use GNU/Linux and I say I use Linux I am 100% correct... and the full OS most people use when they say that includes a lot more than the coreutils, yet I don't see anybody adding those to the shorthand term.

The person who thought of the name wanted it to be a palindrome, but they couldn't spell and were too embarrassed to change it after the fact.

Spoiler

/s, just in case.
