Hide posts in the sidebar and subforums from ignored users

Not sure why this isn't a thing but I'd really love if posts made by people on my ignore list didn't show up for me in subforums or the new topic sidebar, or at least for them to have the same disclaimer that their comments/replies on posts do.

That makes sense, although I don't know if there are technical limitations that prevent it. I will look into it.

I can see status updates from blocked individuals both on the widget and stream.

I've noted it for tracking. It's not a huge change, but making it work reasonably well will require a little bit of effort.

Do you know if this is something you plan to implement in the near future?

I do plan on leaving the forum this summer after I finish an upcoming project, but this would change things.

Currently, there are things I just don't want to see, but the ignore feature does little to nothing to resolve that if you use activity feeds (and the status feed on the front page).

Additionally, I don't really understand why people you ignore can still be notified of your actions. This is easily weaponized by someone who knows full well you don't want to see them in your notifications feed.

Don't take this as an ultimatum, just don't really know of another to ask that reflects how significant this tweak would be.

A "proper" solution is not likely any time soon, but a hacky solution to removing from widgets/streams/??? is probably feasible. I would however need a complete list of the places that should be supported.

Ok, I'm headed home from the office, but I will put one together when I get home.

At a minimum the front page widget:

And the specific status feed. https://linustechtips.com/discover/58/

Ideally recent topics https://linustechtips.com/discover/466/, but I understand if you'd rather not do that.

Obscured screenshot so it doesn't seem like I'm target a specific user.

I do think the ignore feature does need improvement so that people you've ignored don't show up on places like the recent status update list shown in the homepage and the status update feed. There should be an option to ignore status updates from people.

image.png.09cfdb46bb9599a3bf8580990fdc3ba8.png

I think it's an oversight as status updates are meant to be more personal stuff posted to a user's profile, with the idea that if you don't want to see content from that user you wouldn't be visiting their profile anyway so there's no need to hide it, but a lot of regular forum users (the ones who use the forum as a means of socialising not just for asking for help with tech problems) use the status update feed to view updates from other members and it's those regular forum users who are more likely to want to filter out content from the users they don't like.

Status updates have been fixed for the next minor update (eta mid June)

image.png

They're covered by the existing "ignore posts" option. The status updates and recent topics widgets on the homepage have also been updated (hidden content in the widgest is just omitted, so if you're ignoring everyone that posted a status update recently, the widget will just be empty).

Does it need to tell you there is content by a specific person you ignored? Could it be more general like "You've chosen to ignore content by this user?"

It doesn't need to, but do you think it would make much difference? It would probably still need to show the name in the options menu, otherwise you wouldn't know who the unignore button applies to.

Yeah. If I'm ignoring someone, it's hard to do that when constantly being reminded they exist.

I definitely understand the need to display it in the options menu. Just around the site is where I would leave it general.

Hmm, it's working for me, and there's no reason that this change should behave any differently for any different users...

Cool, but what is really the point of status updates?

Not quite following on why it is, how it is now.

I guess some people use it, for something they like or find it useful somehow.

They are the place for "hey look at this" Content. Or anything non-tech. It's the social media feature of the forums.

which is why I don't quite get it, a few seems to use it for social reasons but with the setup at least to me, doesn't seem to encourage that in a way and easily missed out, over general activity? unless people follow you for some reason?
