See this is what I was asking for, first actual use of it I've seen that actually does something. Thank you.

Not to move the goal posts, but I'm interested to see good technical reasons why they went with blockchain, instead of doing a more traditional solution, but that's neither here nor there.

That might be found in some research paper but I have no idea.

The LTT has some kind of agenda to hate on crypto. Most people have no idea how widely used and adopted it is. 

You don't need an article to demonstrate how gta V benefits society. Plain and simple it provides entertainment and enjoyment to tons of people. Cryptocurrency is merely a stock with no backing at this point and yet it need a ton of energy to create.

My original comment was in regards to Bitcoin being a blight on our environment. All of that energy used and wasted solely for some electric fiat currency. I never mentioned blockchain, not sure why you decided to get all up in arms against me with that...

Most of the LTT forum-goers have the capacity to fact-check, this isn't some wacky social-media channel.

 

Crypto coins, and Blockchain are two related, but not the same thing. 

 

Blockchain is basically "here's the entire transaction of everyone who has touched this" which makes it useful for logistical reasons. It does not make it untraceable, quite the opposite.

 

Crypto coins expand on this to have a distributed ledger. Which means it always gets bigger, slower and consumes more energy over time.

 

The thing that is disturbing is when finance-related companies like Square and Paypal say they're going to deal with Bitcoin. When influencers like MrBeast say they deal in bitcoin, it just makes me roll my eyes very hard, because that's dangerous. Influencers that talk about things like this is how lawsuits are generated when it ultimately suckers in a bunch of people who aren't tech or financially-savvy.

 

Bitcoin is not money. Period. It's a highly speculative asset backed by nothing. You can go from owning $1,000,000 to $0.01 in a blink of an eye. When the most common use of bitcoin is malware ransoms, legitimate financial companies need to question why they are assisting in money laundering.

 

Bitcoin shills are here to shill and excuse their behavior, nothing more.

Losing a wallet because an disk failure or something similar I could understand but because you lost the password, I use pretty strong passwords and usually have 8 different one depending on what they access, I change them for new ones when I feel it's been too long they have been used and even if they are not written anywhere I remember also those I stopped using specially for something as important.

These days it costs less than 20$ to make a stainless steel stencil (for pcb manufacturing). 

instead of surface mount component footprints, you can easily cut letters or some binary code (small hole = dot, wide hole = line, there's your morse code)

I had a btc wallet with something like 7 bitcoins, back when you could just set up CPU mining while idle and crank them out. They werent worth anything back then, it was just an interesting project to me, so I wasnt very careful with my wallet. That hard drive is long gone sadly, if I still had it I would be quite wealthy right now.

Not what I meant, and I'm guessing you know it. The comment I was replying to was rather disingenuous, a blackout doesn't erase the BTCs anyone have, just like it doesn't erase your bank account.

Also, to add to your points, if there's an event that cuts you completely off from power and network (including cellphone), then you have other things to worry about than your bank account and your BTCs.

 

BTW, I understand the frustration around cryptocurrencies, I just don't think delegitimizing it is the way to go about things. Switching to proof of stake is already a good start IMO, and saying it's worthless, has no value, or only used by criminals are rather disingenuous arguments.

 

In the end, it seems like the 'feature' that they wanted cryptos to have (everyone can mine them) is what's causing issues.

As seen on previous posts about energy consumption, Iran blackouts, etc, the problem is that a ton of people doesn't consider reasonable to use that much energy for something like that, especially when other people are experiencing blackouts, droughts, smog from fossil fuels, etc.

Increasing tariffs based on energy consumed per constructed area (kWh/m^2) should mitigate the issue, as the legislation in place (the Iran case) already failed to do so.

Miners and other heavy energy users would pay more on energy or to rent a larger place.

if they are paying for the energy then whats the problem?

so whats the difference between a crypto mining shop vs a xx shop that uses shit load of energy

Isn't this exactly what people were concerned about with banks in the 1940s and even today? The USD could be worth $0 when I wake up next morning. I highly doubt it but the same logic applies to any currency that's not backed by anything.

That's an extreme blanket statement and the reality is not everyone and their grandmother is selling children and money laundering with bitcoins. Sure it happens but it also happens more with the USD. More people use the USD for buying drugs, money laundering, and other nefarious and illegal uses. I really do think this stresses the point that if you have a password securing assets (and it's the only means of recovery), then you should keep a backup of the password  (Even if it's on an USB drive that is never used).

Energy is a limited resource, and higher usages create additional costs (raised rates).  When it gets to the point where there are brown-outs, then they are directly affecting the quality of life of other people.

 

It's akin to how the grid gets taxed during a temperature spike because so many people turn on AC...yes there industries that use a ton of electricity, but there are usually regulations.  I also suspect that there are a decent amount of mining operations that aren't listed as companies/run in residential areas
