There are roughly $140 billion worth of Bitcoins in lost wallets

Summary

Of the existing 18.5 million Bitcoin, around 20 percent — currently worth around $140 billion — appear to be in lost or otherwise stranded wallets, according to the cryptocurrency data firm Chainalysis. Wallet Recovery Services, a business that helps find lost digital keys, said it had gotten 70 requests a day from people who wanted help recovering their riches, three times the number of a month ago.

 

Bitcoin owners who are locked out of their wallets speak of endless days and nights of frustration as they have tried to get access to their fortunes. Many have owned the coins since Bitcoin’s early days a decade ago, when no one had confidence that the tokens would be worth anything.

 

Stefan Thomas, a German-born programmer living in San Francisco, has two guesses left to figure out a password that is worth, as of this week, about $220 million.

 

The password will let him unlock a small hard drive, known as an IronKey, which contains the private keys to a digital wallet that holds 7,002 Bitcoin. While the price of Bitcoin dropped sharply on Monday, it is still up more than 50 percent from just a month ago, when it passed its previous all-time high of around $20,000. 

 

The problem is that Mr. Thomas years ago lost the paper where he wrote down the password for his IronKey, which gives users 10 guesses before it seizes up and encrypts its contents forever. He has since tried eight of his most commonly used password formulations — to no avail.

 

“This whole idea of being your own bank — let me put it this way: Do you make your own shoes?” he said. “The reason we have banks is that we don’t want to deal with all those things that banks do.”

 

Other Bitcoin believers have also realized the difficulties of being their own bank. Some have outsourced the work of holding Bitcoin to start-ups and exchanges that secure the private keys to people’s stashes of the virtual currency.

 

Yet some of these services have had just as much trouble securing their keys. Many of the largest Bitcoin exchanges over the years — including the onetime well-known exchange Mt. Gox — have lost private keys or had them stolen.

My thoughts

I don’t know what’s worse, not buying Bitcoin when it was $50 or being one of these people who lost their keys 😂. I am always amazed how many people have next to no password management strategy that allows them to recover their accounts.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing when I saw that. I probably had some BTC myself way back when you could mine with GPUs for BTC directly but I've LONG ago lost the wallet and whatnot :(

Oh yeah good ol days of mining on a card. Got kinda lucky kinda not and accidentally left my computer on at my parents way back when we went on vacation for a week. Promptly shut it down once we got home to not get a massive meltdown from them :p. Little did I know my little btc adventure for mining of the month beforehand was on in the background and it wouldn't be till 4 years later when I took out the hdd from this system to put in a cheap used desktop for myself  that I found a bitcoin folder and to my amusement there were a little over 2 coins in it. So yeah got about 22k when it exploded in 2018 with a little bot set to just autosell once over 10k (checked every 30 minutes or something like that) and I'd say well worth. Luckily I still knew the rhythm of my password from back then for it. Was a pain to get that wallet functional again.

Although I would like to belief I'd store my password somewhere memorable, this could've just as well been me :P Not even in an encrypted drive sense but just as in buy some BTC because it's the hip cool thing, never see it take off and just forget about it and then suddenly 5 years later it's worth a crap ton of money and now I'd like to figure out where it is. I hope he manages to unlock it though. That's a nice chunk of change to have.

IMO, this is how bitcoin ends, by many lost wallets just being erased. Either on purpose or by accident.

It's 220 million dollars NOW. He got them in 2011 when the price fluctuated around 1 USD per bitcoin.

Ah yes, the brilliant idea of writing down a private key on paper and then either lose it or misstype it.

Would had been easier putting all private keys in separate text files and have those inside an encrypted container file which you can carry with you, back it up somewhere locally or even in the cloud, as a passphrase just use something that's identified to you but that isn't used online anywhere like FirstName_MotherMaidenName_BirthDate_LastName

I know at least two people who mined bitcoinc way back when and who now don't have access to their wallet. So wouldn't suprise me at all 😂

Well that's the whole point isn't it?  Untraceable and "secure". 

 

And one day those locked wallets will again be worthless.  

 

Who is going to buy coins at such high prices, you can't just go to a bank and withdraw $220 million once the wallet is unlocked.

I have still yet to see any real, demonstrable, uses for it, that are used by some actual number of people. Instead, it always seems like you hear vague press releases about potential or future uses that somehow never materialize.

I won't even require them to be good use cases, where a traditional solution wouldn't be more efficient/faster/easier to develop, just any real, concrete, examples of blockchain tech being used for something?

I don't know much about crypto but I remember when steam used to except bitcoin, or some other cryptocurrency, lots of people would just mine it passively and buy games with it. Obviously not the greatest example as steam doesn't except crypto anymore but hey that wasn't one of the requirements.
