Posted January 7, 2021 AMD briefly passes Intel in desktop CPU market share for first time in 15 years, according to PassMark. As stated in PassMark's CPU usage data, which measures the percentage of CPUs running the company's benchmarks by brand, AMD momentarily overtook Intel in total Desktop CPU usage share. While the victory was mammoth for AMD, it however was short-lived. Quote AMD has just edged out Intel in desktop CPU market share for the first time in 15 years on the strength of its Ryzen series of processors, first released in 2017. The market share figures, gathered by PassMark Software's PerformanceTest benchmarking tool, showed AMD with a 50.8% share of the Windows desktop CPU market worldwide to 49.2% for Team Blue (Intel) on January 4, 2021. Intel regained a slight 0.4% lead on January 5, but AMD has still passed the silicon Rubicon in its battle with its archrival. The last time AMD beat out Intel was Q1 2006, with a peak of 53.9% market share, which it lost the following quarter as Intel went on an 11-year tear and came close to claiming nearly 80% of the desktop CPU market in Q4 2016. PassMark’s database, while now showing Intel slightly edging out with the lead at 50.1%, AMD is still at 49.9%. To me, even with Intel marginally ahead again, the numbers speak volumes with how close they (AMD) are now to Intel (demonstrating the monumental success that the Zen architecture has been for AMD). Historically, the last time AMD genuinely posed this large of a threat to Intel’s desktop domination was way back in the mid-2000s (right before the Intel Core 2 architecture launch). If AMD is able to better meet demand for Zen 3 CPUs, it is most likely that they can continue to capitalize on their current position. PassMark notes that the data is formulated from thousands of PerformanceTest benchmarks results, and since the software only runs on Windows; the graphs don't reflect other OS users that are not on Windows. Posted January 7, 2021 Dunno, Ryzen 5000 are quite available in my country. I bought my 5800X without any issues. They even had a huge 5600X sale and 5900X are also obtainable. Only 5950X is a bit limited it appears. I give AMD a few more % and then I hope Intel picks up their s**t and becomes competitive again. Posted January 7, 2021 Yeah i don't think passmark numbers are a relevant indicator of market share. We shouldn't kid ourselves, Intel is still way ahead of AMD in every market segment. But for 50-500€ over MSRP depending on the exact chip. So other than the 5600X for 350€ (which is already a hard sell imo), all these CPUs are ridiculously overpriced atm. What good does stock do consumers when the price is so bad? Same thing with RTX 3060Ti and 3070. I can find them in stock at several retailers, but they're all at least 300€ over MSRP. (Basically a 3060Ti for the 3080's MSRP). Right now it's just not a good time to buy almost any hardware... To get something at a decent price you have to be one of the few lucky ones to get something at launch. Posted January 7, 2021 I'm torn about this. On the one hand I fully agree with everyone saying its only one fairly targeted analysis. On the other its still a valid metric, I wouldn't go as far as saying "AMD has the market share lead" but saying "AMD has the MS lead with gamers & benchmarkers" is still a pretty big achievement given where they were 4 years ago. People who wait until prices and availability reaches normal see themselves waiting another 6 months or so. Posted January 7, 2021 What type of "desktop" sales are we talking about? How many corporate customers, which are by far the largest purchasers of desktop PCs run a passmark on their new desktop PCs....or is this the fantasy universe that only DIY PC's matter and custom gaming rigs with LED fans are the benchmark litmus for data centers? I'm not an AMD or Intel fanboy, but the number of AMD desktops and laptops I'm seeing rolled out to corporate clients are still the vast minority. If I were to need a performance workstation right now for myself or a client there is no way I woulnd't seriously consider a white box AMD build for best bang per buck, and I normally won't touch white box builds for any business client. Performance numbers don't lie. Intel has big problem and they are losing the per core efficacy fight which was their only real advantage. Intel still has that stranglehold on the Dells / HP / Lenovos, but even that is cracking. Oddly AMD is now owning the top desktop performance category and is not my first choice for budget. This was also the same scenrio we saw back in the mid 2000's....except I don't think Intel has a 'Core' miracle they can pull out to retake the lead. Posted January 8, 2021 Most of the market share does NOT come from cheap desktop processors and motherboards. It seems most people misunderstand that lol. According to the links, if people read them, you'll find desktop processors only make up 20.1% of AMD's shares. No, AMD wouldn't have that great much more money in the pocket if they had more stock. 5% more maybe depending on production protocol. The last contract with FX processors lasted even after Ryzen 1st gen was released and where still producing them as far as 2019 (if memory serves me today). If you want to help AMD shares, purchase more than just the a processor. Remember that these purchases help pay for that firmware and software too. The more R&D AMD has, the better their products will get. And no, PassMark is not a viable benchmark for PC comparisons. Really W10 isn't either. Windows RTC is the main reason/issue to why.
