No matter what I am watching. News, sports, movies, music videos I want to watch it in High Definition. The minimum acceptable resolution for me is 720p.

Sounds crazy right? Anyone here who shares this (bad?) habit ?

Using only Linux since 2007. Not a single MS Windows or Mac client at home.

It's a dangerous addiction, as there are more addictive resolutions like 1440p and 4k :(

 

I'm at 1080p becuase I bought a top end 1080p monitor ...

I edit my posts more often than not

Whenever I watch movies they have to be 4k blu-ray versions of it

Yeah, always should do checking the background/specs by yourself instead of trusting the marketing. Then only self to blame.

1080p is 2x the pixel count of 720p

.. a bit more after doing calcualtions actually.

What my friends & family say about this is they appreciate watching movies & sports in HD but they say its not really sensible to watch the news in HD.

It isn't 2008 anymore...

In 2011 720p was the standard,with resolutions such as 1680x1050 considered as high res (back in the day the standard aspect ratio was 16:10)

Honestly the most I go up to is 1080p - 1440p, Ive had not so good eyes ever since I was a kid and I'm stubborn and refuse to get glasses/contacts unless I really "need" them so I can't really tell the difference when i see 4k or even 8k

Atleast that means i can just buy the cheaper 1080-1440 monitors and be satisfied lol

If you are 10m away you won't see a difference but if you are 3m~5m or closer then it will be very noticeable.

I am very sensitive when it comes to resolutions,and back in the day i was rocking a 1680x1050 display and never looked back.

It's a 39" inch TV.  If you can tell 1080p vs 768p on it from 5m away.... You're a god.

I am not really knowledgeable enough to agree or disagree so I asked myself some questions.

 

Q1) Is the size of the TV enough ?

A) Yes. My bedroom is not that big.

 

Q2) Am I satisfied with the picture quality ?

A) Yes, I watch movies in HD (720p) from approx 5 feet away & the picture quality is impressive.

 

Q3) In future will I buy another 720p TV ?

A) No. I will buy the maximum resolution available.

 

Q4) Do I miss any feature in this TV ?

A) Yes. This is not a smart TV. If I have to buy a new TV I will definitely buy a smart TV. For now I am planning to buy an Amazon Fire TV stick to turn this TV to a smart TV.

I'm gonna be honest: I prefer higher bitrate but lower resolution content over lower bitrate but higher res content. If I can't read shit because it's all blocky, what's the point of the resolution boost? 

To be honest, though, with what I like to do, anything past 720p doesn't bother me too much.

Expecting at least 1080p signal is nothing unusual. Sad reality is, a lot of channels or sources are less than even 720p. Today, in 2020. It's like we're in 2008 or something, sometimes...

This would've been a bit weird 15 years ago, but now if anything is weird it's why would you be fine with just 720p?

On a 2K display, I would have to say 720P is the bare minimum and can still look a bit crap. 480P and there's no reason for me full screening at that point.

without my glasses i can almost not tell a difference between 1080p and 480p on my phone but thats about the only time ill accept bellow 1080p content generally. On data caps 480p can be fine too

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

using a 85 inch 4k tv on a daily basis, watching cable at 480p on the tv is not as bad of a an experience as people might think it would be. it is understandable to be "addicted" to a resolution or clarity, but i suppose it varies from person to person as to what is  a god viewing experience.
