F@H Web Client Dark Skin with PPD comparison by GPU / WU

Go to solution Solved by LAR_Systems,

HI everyone,  Quick update.

There was some server updates today to deal with server resource issues so sorry if you  were impacted by some strangeness like WU averages etc. being a little strange while this occurred.

In addition to the cleanup you will now find that for GPU projects the Atoms and Cause is reported on the slots.

Atoms and Cause coming to CPU slots soon.

image.png.96a2a24471ee3392c37e18b8310adc99.png

The PPD indicator has been updated so there is a +/- 10% tolerance for the red or green indicators coming on for when you GPU slot is operating within this "Average" range making it a more useful indication as to when PPD is out of the ordinary.

Project pages on the database site have been updated to show the Atoms, Core and project branch status of projects.

image.png.d3fcd4c830ec61537d13dc93b7450eae.png

And CPU based project pages (link found in the CPU slots in the web client) now contain the BETA charts for PPD-PLC (PPD per logical processor) as that system builds data and is under review.

These client based updates will trickle in to the wild over the next couple hours and take effect with a refresh of the page when they do.

@LAR_Systems did we ever work out why I am seeing the wrong points total on the extension?

I did not as you seem to be the only one having this issue.

Part of the challenge with diagnosing it further is I would need to be running your user name and API key to see if there is something with your user account that is different from the baseline accounts I use for testing.

Of course that means a trust fall exercise where you would have to provide that info to me via DM which I'm assuming is not cool as I'm just an avatar you met in a forum ;)

This would be a technical question from a noob 🤓

I happen to have a long-lasting problem with FAHControl. It is described at some length here: https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?p=335692#p335692 but in a nutshell I'm unable to use FAHControl (or Advanced Control as I'm running Windows 10 pro, 1909-2004). When I do, I get 997 errors (ERROR:Receive error: 997: Overlapped I/O operation is in progress), first every few minutes and, if I persist, all the time, so that FAHControl is almost constantly greyed out. It also happens when I'm listening to FAH via telnet, be it with another instance of FAHControl on the network, or with HFM.NET. Usually, I just tail the log with a text editor. This is safe. And I don't fold on the processor (3970X) anymore, as I lost one while doing so and it was impossible to determine why this chip just died on me like that.

Today I realized that the problem does not appear with the Dark Extension. Albeit this extension is pulling quite a bit of data. So my question is: What is the main difference between the Dark Extension and FAHControl that could explain the presence/absence of 997 errors? The use of telnet? Or more than that?

Thanks for your thoughts!

It also happens when my firewall/protection software (McAfee) is off (just tried it once more). And if it was that, I just could not establish a connection, no? But I can, and a connection on localhost or via FAH and the network still holds, something just throws errors, but the connection holds. The connection is only lost when established from another machine via HFM.NET or a standard telnet on a CLI, but not via FAH - then there's just a moment, after a while a few seconds or more, during which FAH is blocked.

EDIT: I should add that these errors apparently don't disturb the folding. There's no visible impact.

EDIT2: I have the same setup (Win10, McAfee, etc.) on three other machines that also are folding, but without any such issue. The only major difference is the platform (TRX40). And, after my first chip died, I replaced everything (processor, MB, RAM, PSU, PSU cables) - no change.

Firstly, let me give you an advice you NEED to hear:

Delete that software that you call firewall/protection/antivirus or whatever you think it is. McAfee is pure arse, especially if you are using free version. Get ESET or use damn windows defender, even it will be better than McAfee.

Secondly, if you have same setups and no errors, that could be win10 acting up. Try fulling uninstalling FAH and deleting any traces of it in AppData and any other place where you can find traces of it. Restart, download newest FAH or one of previously stable versions. Disable all your firewalls/antiviruses/other shit and install the FAH. Try folding as anonymous and when (if) that works, then put your personal info into Advanced Control.

If even that doesn't work, try making new user and installing only FAH on it (delete any other software on that user) and try there. If it still gives you same error, then check your network (assuming that machine is not on same network as other ones).

EDIT: Also, yeah, try updating BIOS, not sure if this was mentioned, but TR platform could be causing this as well.

Thank you!

I use the All Access version of McAfee (all software available, unlimited number of machines). I'm aware that it's not really useful most of the time, but this particular machine is extremely important for me and I want/need the added security.

When the error started it was with FAH 7.5.1. Since then I tried all versions, including the latest betas (7.6.15-17), always after uninstalling incl. data and several times scrapping it totally using Revo Uninstaller. Three times since the beginning of the problem, I also reinstalled Windows from scratch - the two main "disks" (m.2 ssd) of this system are also brand new. And I check for new bios almost each week. I run the latest version (just checked one more time).

As it happens, I also replaced the whole network recently, for unrelated reasons. New router, new switch, new cables. And all machines are on it (wired).

I could try to install Win10 on a fresh disk (all other disconnected), then install only FAH and run as anonymous or just any new user. That I never tried. Will think about it...

OK, so I downloaded Win 10 on an USB key, formatted a 240 GB Sata SSD, shut down the TRX40, disconnected all drives, started it on the USB key, and I'm now installing Windows 10 Pro on the SSD... Getting ready... Restart... Just a moment... Region... Keyboard... Network... Just a moment... Restart... Just a moment... Personal use... Offline account... Limited experience... Test... pw... Security questions... Don't use, no, no, no, no... Just a moment... We're getting things ready... might take several minutes... Almost there... done!

Hm, display settings all over the place. Edge... foldingathome.org... Choose your platform... Windows... Run. Next, next, agree, finish... Allow Access in Defender. Browser opens... Start Folding... CPU starts, GPUs won't as I'm on Light by default... Advanced Control...

First 997 error after less than 2 minutes. I switch to the TRX40 for copying the code...

EDIT3: done, no problem. If you guys can solve this, I promise I'll join the LTT team! 😇

I remember reading about something now, I believe on so many threads you have to make multiple CPU slots, i.e. instead of having one CPU slot with 64 threads (or auto) you manually make 4 slots with 16 threads (or 15) each.

OK, so I downloaded Win 10 on an USB key, formatted a 240 GB Sata SSD, shut down the TRX40, disconnected all drives, started it on the USB key, and I'm now installing Windows 10 Pro on the SSD... Getting ready... Restart... Just a moment... Region... Keyboard... Network... Just a moment... Restart... Just a moment... Personal use... Offline account... Limited experience... Test... pw... Security questions... Don't use, no, no, no, no... Just a moment... We're getting things ready... might take several minutes... Almost there... done!

Hm, display settings all over the place. Edge... foldingathome.org... Choose your platform... Windows... Run. Next, next, agree, finish... Allow Access in Defender. Browser opens... Start Folding... CPU starts, GPUs won't as I'm on Light by default... Advanced Control...

First 997 error after less than 2 minutes. I switch to the TRX40 for copying the code...

EDIT2: OK, I'll let the WU finish, get back to my usual config and call it a day.

EDIT3: done, no problem. If you guys can solve this, I promise I'll join the LTT team! 😇

HI catching up on all your recent posts, couple of thoughts.

First really nice PC :)

Beyond that the dark mode client likely launches and works compared to the desktop client of the software as it's not running software that can conflict with anything on your system but rather talks directly to the F@H service API on your computer bypassing the advanced client app etc.

The others pointing you in the direction of an antivirus issue are likely on the right track for you I/O issue.  But may not be in the way that you are thinking.

A common issue with the client can be anti-virus, malware detection and the important one ransomware mitigation services.

As the client starts to work through, modify and package up each work unit software on your system may see what it is doing as being "Ransomware like" even though it's only on WU / Temp files in F@H and it does not match a specific ransomware profile.

I have seen this occur with Bitdefender (which I recommend highly over mcafee) and have seen it with backup software like Arconis which more and more often has anti-ransomware features.

In both cases you need to add the F@H program/work folders to the exclusion lists for such software or you will commonly get locked WUs, failed WUs and restarts.

Had the same issue early on with a peasant TR4 2950x workstation running F@H and Aronis / Bitdefender and traced this back as the issue.  Couple exclusions / accepting the dangers etc. in both apps... fine ever since.

Hope this helps.

PS: Even when you uninstall all extra antivirus and backup software, then you have windows anti-malware to deal with... so remember configure exclusions.

Oh... I should add something about this to the event post... I'll try to do it after dinner, anything specific you want me to mention?

That it would be awesome to have more people to be users and see how their configs stack up, but also to be gentle with the bug reports as there is only one of me for direct code support ;)

I remember reading about something now, I believe on so many threads you have to make multiple CPU slots, i.e. instead of having one CPU slot with 64 threads (or auto) you manually make 4 slots with 16 threads (or 15) each.

Thanks! You do have to make multiple slots, at least for now, as FAH proposes very few WUs that can run on more than 32 threads. But science-wise, the more threads the better, so that dividing the processor in 4 slots would be a bit wasteful. At the beginning (when I did fold on the processor), I tried several configurations like 32/24, 32/20/12, 24/24/12 but never with 4 slots. I'll try it one of these evenings using the "new" SSD, so that my usual software config doesn't interfere.

I had Acronis but I switched to Macrium Reflect for images, and both do have some sort of protection against ransomware. Definitely worth a shot! I'll try and configure Defender on the SSD I prepared yesterday, one of these evenings. And if it solves the problem, I'll dive into McAfee and Macrium.

Thanks! Have a nice day!

I meant that this was actually a solution to your specific issue.

The same amount of science is done anyway, just each given unit takes a bit longer to process...

Well, I have found several such "solutions" that seem to work for a while. You can change just about anything in the configuration and the problem stops, momentarily. I just tried it:

As soon as I opened Advanced Control, I had an error 997, but it went quiet for some six whole minutes just after I created four slots. And the errors now start reappearing:

I was even a victim of this enthusiasm, just like the posters at your link. I wrote that a bios update solved it. And it was true, for a few minutes, and for the next hours, it was much less serious than before. But it comes back.

Time is an important factor, especially in medical research: what you get now is more worth than the same coming only tomorrow. And as in FAH, the returned WUs determine the next series, the faster really is the better.

Man I gotta remember to open the browser for ITNOS, current average for 1070ti's is still 875k, but I'm doing anywhere from 1M-1.1m per card every day, while underpowered to  65%

I know it's WU dependent, but still.

Hi Everyone,

Handful of updates to the PPD database website you may be interested in.

The GPU Make has been made a link on all applicable grids to show a company specific PPD ranking page for folders that only want to see ranks for team red or green.
https://folding.lar.systems/folding_data/gpu_ppd_overall_nvidia

https://folding.lar.systems/folding_data/gpu_ppd_overall_amd

Folding WU/Project ID has been added to link to it's own detail page that contains the project information and PPD results for cards we have data for on that project.
Grid with project IDs: https://folding.lar.systems/folding_data/gpu_ppd_by_wu

Example detail page: https://folding.lar.systems/folding_data/gpu_ppd_by_project?project_id=14468

With this information you can get a better idea of what different projects are for, and how they can wildly vary in performance.

Cheers,

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to give a bit of feedback.

I have had too much to do, still have, to find the time to try and test the 3970X on a clean system without any interference, not even Defender. Maybe I will at some point, but thinking hard about it all, I decided to get rid of it, rather. Next time I have enough time in front of me, I'll transfer my main machine to a time-tested X299 system and sell my AMD stuff (already started). Then I might make this test as well, in between, just to clear that up. But I've had enough with AMD, all the love is now gone.

Man I gotta remember to open the browser for ITNOS, current average for 1070ti's is still 875k, but I'm doing anywhere from 1M-1.1m per card every day, while underpowered to  65%

I know it's WU dependent, but still.

Looks like your hard work is starting to move the needle as WU calculation window slides.
