i'm moving to vancouver. am i crazy?

ShiverMePenguins

so, there is an art institute in vancouver, and i'm really interested in it, especially their bachelors of science & game programming degree. I applied, was accepted and all that jazz (but lets be honest, any technical school will take you). am i crazy for wanting to move there?

what other options will i possibly have?

Have fun moving to the most expensive city to live in Canada! Linus lives in surrey I think, which is a little south east of Vancouver.

It's really not that bad. He's likely not buying property. It's the same price rental wise to live in Edmonton or Calgary.

@ShiverMePenguins

You'll love it! Definitely do it. You can always live in Burnaby, Coquitlam, New West, etc if you want cheaper rent. They're all within the GVRD which, really, is one large city.

Where would you be moving there from?

Vancouver is a great place but it's extremely expensive to live in (besides the electricity costs).

Isn't a very exciting place but if you're into hiking, nature, biking, the like, you'll love it.

Helps if you don't mind the rain either. :P

Also, the art institute is close to Granville station, so anything on the Canada line (South Van to Richmond) or Expo line would be an easy commute.

There's a few AI campuses in Vancouver, but they're all located near a skytrain station.

The skytrain basically opens up pretty much every area, really. Transit is amazing in Vancouver. They're also opening up the Evergreen line in a year or so which will extend pretty deep into Coquitlam.

Then they should begin the UBC line.

THIS! I couldnt beleive when I moved to Calgary that rent is the same price or more compared to Vancouver!

Dude. I moved out to Edmonton in the summer to help out a buddy, thought about staying but when we started looking at apartment prices?

Hell no.

Not going to spend more to live in AB. Especially with the much, much higher electricity costs.

His rent went up 29% in 2 months! The lack of rental regulation and proper renters laws made me move back.

Sure, If I was making $50k+ a year it wouldn't be as bad, but I was just starting a few courses. The higher tax rate was a huge turn off.

electricity costs? i like biking, nature, hiking, gaming, gaming, more gaming, and snowboarding.

Electricity is very cheap in BC. Most of our electricity is hydro so it's very affordable here, although the cost is going to be rising.

Biking and hiking is great in Vancouver in my opinion. Vancouver is also nearby mountains for snowboarding and skiing which are also pretty great for hiking in the summer.

I think you'll like it. :)

Haha, you might find the climate a bit to deal with at first. I dated a girl from the Virginia and she found it pretty hard for the first few months.

It'd be pretty good to learn if you're seriously looking into moving here. A word of advice, avoid Surrey at all cost. Also White Rock and New Westminster to lesser extents.

Power rates are drastically different across Canada. Because BC produces most of its own electricity it's quite cheap. ~$30/month in an apartment.

If you like those things, you'll fall in love with Vancouver. You can go mountain biking (some of the best trails in the world are in North Vancouver), hiking, snowboarding and enjoy the sun all in the same day (well..sun on a lucky day).

I can't wait till I move back in a few months.

Check out BCIT! It's got great courses and is one of the best technical schools in the province.

I've had friends that have gone to each, and both loved the experience. AI generally has heavy course loads.

I think they both have pretty reasonable international student rates.

Also, sorry for the gender reference. It's pretty rare for a girl to be on here.
