BOINC Pentathlon 2020

We have any guides floating around for configuring cloud resources for this? I can toss some toward Azure.

Found this... anyone know of a better method?

Quote

Linux...

sudo apt-get install boinc-client

sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client restart

sudo boinccmd --project_attach http://projecturl.org/ yourweakkey

It is probably the fastest to do, then check on the project page that the instance is well connected.

Personnally I created an image with boinc installed and configured for network connection and use that image when launching new instances. Then manage it through boinc manager on my laptop.

Hello Leadeater,

just found this forum.

I want to thank all of you for joining and crunshing the Pentathlon 2020.

I hope your team will pass the P3D in the marathon run! Please!

You gave me the idea to try using docker for it! Seems to be working so far, now how to secure it and whatnot is a problem for another day.

Successfully started working on tasks.

Azure setup a container instance and pointing it to "linuxserver/boinc". then opening 8080 TCP in it's networking settings.

Stuck on "Ready to Start" when done as a web app container... haven't gotten container instance to be persistent, but the instances will begin processing.

If it fails miserably I'll update this post.

Dang, as it stands it's gonna be difficult to gain in city run (universe@home).

We need 200,000 to 300,000 extra point per hour to manage to overtake them.

Still doable but this time every CPU count!

This is pretty much the way to get it done besides the fact "apt" has replaced "apt-get" in modern versions of Ubuntu/Ubuntu server and other Debian based distros (Mint/PopOS/etc)

You might like to run "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y" before you install boinc-client. That way you know you'll get the latest package and the system is up to date.

Restarting boinc-client should not be necessary. After installing all the updates & boinc-client you could do a system restart "sudo reboot" though it's likely not necessary either.

The boinccmd command is correct for attaching a project to your boinc instance. Do you know how to acquire your weak key?

If they don't have anything left bunkered when Universe ends all our CPU is either going back to the Marathon or to Amicable but since Amicable is GPU enabled probably going to go back to the Marathon where we should overtake P3DN.

Fingers crossed.

P3DN has had very high output in the City Run. If they point that back at the Marathon, we'll be eating some dust.

I'm using Azure too. That method is what I use on Azure. i would recommend using Australia Central D2-64v3 and if possible Fsv2-Series. That is cheapest you can get if you wanna do spot instances. East US 2 is cheap too if you can't get Australia Central.

We don't have many other options I'm afraid. If CPU doesn't contribute a worthwhile amount on Amicable then what other options do we have? I'm uncertain if throwing CPU into the Javlin Throw will do anything.

I'm all ears on suggestions for what to point our resources at once Universe is up.

I was just being a bit more pragmatic about your comment about passing P3DN in the marathon. In fact, I'd say that Marathon is probably our best place to put our CPU cycles. Our current placement will be under threat as the next 3 places behind us in the Marathon have substantially more CPU power than us, based on their City Run numbers so we should try our best to hold them off.

due to leaks in boinc i will only have 16 Bunkers to empty out from bender and 1 from scooty puff sr and 1 from calculon. the fact several of the jobs on nvidia today took 15-20 mins didn't make it to my full 20 i was aiming for i may start on 17 here shortly but was getting computation errors again double stacking...will set gpu max to .5 for the main runs so i can double stack properly.  but don't have time currently to fight that...

At least a memory leak is better than a leak in water cooling 🙂

I noticed something going on with one of my rigs memory and a reboot fixed it when I was playing with Amicable numbers but then I didn't have enough Swap configured so it was generally thrashing the system at the time.

Running just Rosetta, F@H and NumberFields things seem pretty smooth.

im ready lol 16 done and 2 running.

so something has happened to the jobs where they actually get hurt now by doublestacking worse than 50% lol so i guess no doublestacking currently.

how long after the time hits should i wait before releasing? 5 Mins, 30mins or 1HR? yes i know its still 1 hr out but want to ask so i know when i should pull out the bull whip.
