Can someone ELI5 how to limit F@H's CPU usage?

If I set the whole thing to "light", CPU usage is between 40-50% (which is fine), but GPU is stuck at "waiting for idle". If I set things to "medium", GPU finally kicks in (<10%) but CPU cranks to 100% (I'm only on discord and firefox currently while folding, btw). I'd like both to run without my comp being idle, but not over-tax my precious computer.

the slider decides on how manny threads will be used. Light doesn’t use the GPU at all, medium only while PC is not used and full uses the GPU everytime. 
 

you are seeing 40-50% on the CPU, because light uses 50% of the available Cores. Medium a bit more + the GPU and full uses everything.

 

 

my recommendation: download HW monitor. Put that baby on full thrust and see how the temperature behaves. Besides overheating there is nothing to worry about with F@H

Go into your Advanced control panel (Go to system tray, right click on your F@H icon, when you hover over it it should say "folding active"). From there, click configure -> slots -> doule click on CPU -> then you will set the number of cores in cpu to the max number of cores you have -2 (That's what I found works. Play with this setting, and your slider for power in the main screen, to try and get CPU usage where you're comfortable with it.)

In the advanced view you can go into configure and manually set how many CPU threads the CPU slot uses. I currently leave two threads free for my OS.

My own cpu is sitting unloved by the WU server regardless of what I try, sadly my 3950x spends more time idling than doing any work

Decided to join the folding team last Saturday and looks like I've managed to acquire quite a lot of points despite of all the server issues. It's nice to be able to use the gaming rig for something useful even when I'm not using it

On that topic, does very slow internet cause problems with folding? I have 2 more rigs I can set up tomorrow but I have satalite internet that is horrible (20KB/s).

Haven't folded in a while but was told they got some covid stuff going. Got 3 rigs pointed and cooking. Is it typical to not get GPU projects? All of my CPUs are going but nothing so far for any of my GPUs (AMD or NVIDIA)

 

Nvm, I'm incapable of reading the stickies. At least my computers are smart, right?

Slow internet will not affect folding, but it will affect how fast you download WUs. But you have an option to tell client to download WUs before the one you are working on is complete. 

 

For example, I sometimes tell my rigs to download new WU when I am at 75% of one I am working on, so I have the next one as soon as possible and avoid wasting time on waiting for servers.

Next Unit Percentage

v6: not applicable

Sets the work unit percentage completed as to when the V7 client downloads the next Work Unit (WU) while the current WU is processing, where XX is between 90-100%.  99% is the default setting.

 

v6 and previous clients would finish a Work Unit (WU), upload it to the Work Server, then download a new WU, and begin processing. One of the best new features in the V7 client is the ability to concurrently download a new WU just before the current one completes, or while the current one uploads.

 

Very fast computers, or computers on a very fast internet connection will find that changing this setting to 100% is the best balance between points and performance.  Remember the bonus clock starts ticking when the WU is downloaded, so if downloaded earlier than necessary to keep the computer folding, the bonus points clock starts ticking down.
