Is a Q6600 and a GT610 still acceptable for gaming?

terrytek

Yeah, gaming at 3GHz, may feel fine, but the 610 is hell for me.

Like i said (and others) get a 470/480/560ti/660ti or amd equivelant ,ive seen gtx 480 twinfrozr used going for like 100-110 $ a few months ago,but you can wait for a 750ti if you really want to :P,

But personally i would buy a used 470/480/560ti/660ti or amd equivelant and save up for a complete upgrade (cpu/mobo/ram/gpu) near the end of the year or after (really depends on how (un)optimized the games will get and what games you will play).

Well, the prices of the 750Ti start at around 140USD.  Is it worth it? I heard it underperforms even the 660Ti,

IDK about mine. Brand: didn't exist since '06. Abit. Chipset: nForce 680i. ATX.

Whoa, Abit.....haven't heard about anyone else using their mobo in a while, though I go to one of the Abit forums where they do use their boards. I also have an even older Abit NF7-S + AXP 2800+ Barton rig which is still alive and kicking to this day.

Contrary to what Ryan'd said, I believe a number of us here are still using LGA775 setups, I passed my LGA 775 C2Q 6600 (Kentfield) +_ Asus P5W DH Dleuxe rig to my sis-in-law. I still have a gaming LGA775 system in my 3rd rig - LGA775 X9650 (Yorkfield) + Asus ROG Maximus II Formula + HD7970 + 8GB RAM - and this rig ownz in games at 1080P.

As for OP's question, you can get by with that Q6600 especially if you can notch it up to 3ghz or higher, but that GT610 is simply a POS, no two ways about it I'm afraid. Sure, use that GT610 for now, but pony up for a better card....like an R7 265/GTX750 Ti, hell, even a cheap HD7770 (<80USD) would be a great improvement over that POS GT610.

Well, it works fine at 3 GHz, just a BSOD here and there. I am actually saving for a 750Ti. What are the power requirements BTW?

The GTX 750 Ti? It needs 60W

If it BSOD once in a while, then it isn't exactly fine, what chip is yours? The 'G0' /SLACR chip is the one that is apparently good for OC'ing, mine was a 'G0' chip and I had a TRUE120 + Corsair fan cooling it. The GTX750 Ti is a great card which requires low power (60W) and is quite capable of gaming at 1080P, though some compromises with ingame setting have to be made. What PSU do you have?

How can i check the stepping without removing cpu cooler?

I got a full modular Raidmax 750W PSU. Very crappy indeed, and unreliable. Need replacement.

You can check the stepping by running cpu-z and then look at revision, thats your stepping :P

The power requirement for a reference 750 ti is minimum 300w psu and it uses 60w (http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-750-ti/specifications)

Oww and heres a review of the card if you want to compare cards  http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/nvidia_geforce_gtx_750_and_750_ti_review,1.html

It's a B3 revision. Is that bad, other than the TDP of 105 W?

compare it to the 650 Ti/650 Ti BOOST

It's not bad, just that a G0 stepping will generaly oc better and at a lower temp and has a higher temp treshold then B3 (think its 60C for B3 and 71C for G0)

IDK if the 750Ti is a good card, because since it lacks a 6 pin connector, it will draw its power from the PCIe connector, possibly limiting OC headroom. Is that true?

Yes you'll get more overclocking headroom from a 6 pin. But stock performance is already exceptional (by far pest perf/watt card) for the power bracket.
