Is a Q6600 and a GT610 still acceptable for gaming?

terrytek

I can vouch for Llano's cores being weak as hell.

OK, let's get back on topic. Besides, why are you guys recommending me chipsets to go with? I decided to keep my motherboard.

Q6600 is still a fairly good CPU.  Heck I've got a C2Q sitting in a Rampage Formula, and that system plows through games with a GTX 260.

If you decide to replace your motherboard, those would be the best options. Anyways, I think what you need to do is clear: buy a better cooler for your cpu, and buy a GTX 400/500 card (whatever is cheap as long as it has 1GB or more of vram)

I got a Thermalright TRUE Spirit 120 installed as the cooler. I still need to make a decision on what to make. But my dad may not pay for it, for he said not to fuck with it, and just a couple hours ago, he ragequit and kicked my computer, destroying the front panel.

The case doesn't matter, but you should show him some benchmarks and tell him that the Core 2 Quad is still worth bothering with

What about this?

(also, Intel Ark site on X48).

X48 came around pretty late in the LGA775 epoch (Q1 2008 according to ARK) and

not too many boards with it ever made it to market, hence why it's not very well

known I think. I didn't know about X48 until I came across it while researching

something about X58, which came at the end of the same year.

EDIT: Just noticed, apparently Asus' original Rampage Extreme was

an X48 board.

Hmm weird, ive never used on one/worked on one then... I do believe I had a X38 board ASUS P5E looks like biggest advantage in the DDR3 compatibility. Thats kinda weird but hey back then you could put a low end processor in the highest end board if you wanted.

The X48 northbridge came after X38

Yes guys I now know @alpenwasser beat you to it.

Either way a Q6600 is still usable especially with X38 or x48 but a Q9550 or higher would better. They are getting on their last legs though. I would oc the balls of the Q6600 as that was a great OCing chip and ride it until you can save up for a nice build. Pick up some mid grade GPU in the meantime the new 750 or 750 Ti that are coming might be good options.

Yeah X48 really wasn't well known at all from what I can tell.

I did manage to find something in a review on the original Rampage Extreme, don't

know whether or not it's true, but it does kind of make sense (to me, at least):

X48 in itself isn’t a very special chipset. X38, which launched more than a year ago, was a slightly faster option over 975X, which was the prior enthusiast chipset. X48 is down to the smallest detail a piece of X38 silicon. However, it’s supposedly binned for higher FSB operation and DDR3 support.

Well the P5E was actually a higher board with a few features stripped so it OCDd just like the higher end board I think some striker one. My friend's even just had a sticker over the striker model number with the P5E model number. lol, the good ol'days.

from mid 2008 till 2 months ago I used a q9950 @ 4ghz ,Rampage Formula (x48 ,love this mobo) , 8gb ocz reaper (ddr2), and a gtx 470 as my main rig, (upgraded to a 4770k/msi z87-gd65,8gb gskill 2133 cl9 because i fried 2 ram slots on the rampage formula)

Anyway for gaming it was still running pretty good, but it will start to show its age if you get into 64 man bf3/4, also in f1 games (think my minimum fps went up by 15 fps from going to a q9550 @ 4ghz to a 4770k @ stock in f1 2013)

In short oc the q6600 , and get a 470/480/560ti/660ti or amd equivelant, anything higher will be bottlenecked by the cpu and that should last you for now, but like i said, it's starting to show its age so expect to upgrade from it near the end of the year (depending on how (un)optimized the games will get)

Yeah, gaming at 3GHz, may feel fine, but the 610 is hell for me.

Well, should I wait for the 750Ti, which is set to release this month? It's based on the new Maxwell architecture.
