@Windows7ge I see the sleeping Epyc has woken 😀

I just replaced the i3-2100 in the X9SCL in my TrueNAS Server with an e3-1245v2 I found on eBay for $80Cdn. Slight performance increase.  Now if I’d only noticed the 4x8GB DDR3-1600 ECC I picked up at the same time was Registered and not Unbuffered 🤦‍♂️

Just cranked my GPU farm up another 300W with the cooler weather. Finally heating the house again rather than taxing the A/C.

It has. Got it back online a couple of months ago.

In addition to that though I also got iPXE Network Boot from FreeBSD working so the 3930K, 5960X, & a pair of E5-2670v1's running Ubuntu Server and so far they're running BOINC without issue.

Nice! I tried using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Server for Folding but got mired in dependency hell so just reverted back to using a minimal Desktop install instead. The downside of having to have X in order to use the NVidia Tools in *nix.

Have to start trying to get Folding/BOINC working consistently on Ubuntu 20.04 soon as the End of Support date is nearing. When I last tried a year or so ago there were issues.

CPU compute is easy. GPU compute is where things get complicated on anything Linux based. There's frequently no guides on how to set it up and the various distributions often don't come with OpenGL or OpenCL out of the box.

I got OpenCL working on 20.04 through the AMD Hardware Enablement driver but it's a PITA that nobody tells you these things.

I'm more of a CPU aficionado anyways so I'm glad there are projects that can only leverage CPU. Like not everything can be parallelized for GPU compute.

On a semi-related note I see WCG got a major facelift. Something about partnering with another research institute.

Likely IBM got into it when Grid computing was the new shiny thing in the early 2000s as a research project. Now that the technology has matured and cluster front-ends and schedulers are accepted technology they just want to divert the resources to newer technologies. Moving it to another of the participants labs was like when F@H transitioned from the Pande Lab at Stanford to Greg Bowmans at WUSL.

I too preferred the old interface as it was easier to see at a glance daily performance across projects. Likely just the usual let’s make it mobile enabled that being the lowest common denominator.

Hey, anybody here in the Rosetta@home BOINC team? I was crunching Seti@home on my systems since the year 2000, until the project was suspended. 7M points from endless crunching on my core 2 Duo laptop and a few other old computers. Now Rosetta is my primary, Einstein my secondary. Bought a lot of Optiplex small form factor (SFF) Skylake-class PCs used off a popular auction site and have been able to install Windows 10 off a USB stick and get it up and running with BOINC as a service, Windows updates disabled, headless in about 25 to 30 minutes per machine.

Can't wait to get my electric bill, but hey it's for science! And there's a fair amount of green energy in the grid in Washington State.

Anybody else on the team here? Is it a tiny team compared to Folding? Just as important as Folding they are tied together?

There appear to be only about 80 active people crunching Rosetta currently under team LTT. I see @miker07 is there as well.

I’m currently mostly focused on Mapping Cancer Markers on World Community Grid for most of my CPUs with a smattering of Open Pandemics on a Couple of GPUs with Einstein on the same GPUs for when Open Pandemics isn’t providing tasks.

Im running Folding on most of my GPUs so I’m not doing any Rosetta except when it is an event in the Pentathlon.

That sounds great, I've never tried World community grid. I figure I'm doing good work with Rosetta at home even if it's more generic little brother to folding at home.

Wouldn't it be nice, if BOINC teams could be global across all projects.

Edit: is there a World Community grid Linus team?

Edit; perhaps I should have spent the extra dough, and got i7s with hyper threading instead of i5s. They seem to be more efficient in terms of computation per watt.

Regarding computation per watt: I guess I am the first team LLT member to do Einstein@Home natively on a M1Pro.... its running for some time now and the efficiency seams pretty awesome. Ill report back with some average points on the weekend!

FOLDING MONTH 2021! GOGOGO and save on some heating costs 🙂

Like the old saying “The best camera is the one you have on you” the best CPU is what you can afford. I got into BOINC through folding as a way of using up some of my excess threads. So I’ve been slowly replacing the 4c CPUs I bought just for folding with larger ones as they’re available at reasonable prices. I usually buy the last generation CPUs when they’re on fire sales just before they go out of stock. I’m keeping my eyes on the R7 3700x currently waiting for the price to drop a few more percent.

Im running mostly Ryzen with a 9900K thrown in there and a couple of older Intel CPUs I have lying around when I need to spice things up a bit. I find that Ryzen, when buying new, much better value and more efficient that Intels recent offerings. Competition is a good thing.

Yes, there is. LTT team for most projects. We usually participate in the BOINC pentathlon in the spring so we’ve hit most projects.

I took a look at your statistics for SETI@home, you got nearly 5 million points from crunching on a dual-core Core 2 Extreme from 2008? That's seriously impressive. For comparison, it took nearly 8 months of crunching Rosetta on my 6C/12T Ryzen 3600 to get to 1 million on Rosetta. And that laptop's still running? That's one hell of an endurance test right there. What make and model is it? Also, congratulations on 20+ years of BOINC. 👏

Yes that laptop is still running today. Some of that credit is due to the 9800m GS video card that was crunching for Seti@home for a long time. It is an Asus G50VT. Pretty beaten up. Gone thru a few fans. Works fine still overclocked to 3.45ghz

24 7 crunching.

Heh. I've gone through 3 laptops in that time. I had my previous laptop die on me when I was running WCG + Folding on the GPU. Supposedly a CPU failure. It was fine, one day I was browsing on it, went for a walk and it was dead by the time I came back. It wasn't overclocked or anything, in fact undervolted and running @ 2Ghz instead of base clock of 2.4Ghz when it failed.

I ought to resume crunching Rosetta myself, although I'm only giving BOINC 2 threads on my current laptop.

Also, don't forget to apply for your BOINC badge if you're interested. You should be eligible for one.

WCG supports GPU now?

Edit:

I ask because I have 4 A40's doing nothing right now.

Yes, a LeadEater is now a unit of measurement.

Umm no, no they don't, really ... 🤫

OpenPandemics supports GPUs but they are limited to about 1700 WUs per day and are thus rare. I'm still running them on a GTX 1660ti and 1060 6GB that are too inefficient for folding these days but I'm also running Einstein on the same GPUs with a Weight of 0 so the OPNG GPU WUs take precedence. You also have to somewhat spam the servers requesting an update frequently so it takes a fair bit of tweaking.

These GPUs only consume about 80-90W on either project when at close to 100% utilization running 4 tasks and 3 respectively per GPU. I shudder to think how many concurrent OPNG taks you'd have to assign to a A40 to keep it utilized.

Yup, it’s Liquidis Plumbing again.

Sent them a PM on the Einstein Form asking if they’d be amenable to transferring management to an active member and pointed them to this thread.
