At over 300K PPD I take it you got GPU jobs working?

For reasons unknown I'm not getting any more. 😕 I can't compete with GPU compute.

How could you WCG. You were my ace in the hole but with GPU jobs available I have nothing. 😭

Damn, Missed an opportunity here. Should have told you I got a dual Epyc 64-core system up and running 🤪

As long as the driver supports OpenCL 1.2 it should work assuming the hardware is good. Apparently issues popped up in Beta with older cards. GTX 700-series don't work under Windows but do under Linux and some older AMD Cards will work if you spoof the reporting so they report as supporting OpenCL 1.2 so OpenCL 1.1 appears to work fine for the container/toolchain they are using (AutoDock) but has been restricted by the project.

Still not much movement on the GPU tasks. I've only seen a few today so far. OpenPandemics is limiting the number of tasks currently as they are still assessing the impact on their "pipeline" presumably to ensure the rapid rate of returns from GPUs doesn't break their collection and validation servers.

So though their "Beta" period completed successfully and they went into production April 6th, with the limited amount of tasks available they are still, in essence, in Beta.

I always love it when a company releases something from BETA but it still has issues. Kind of turning the general public into a second wave of testers.

How did you get those? I would love a 64 core or two but they're so expensive even second hand.

My 32 core 7601 is still being...weird...hoping it's a Ubuntu Server 20.04.2 LTS issue. When it replaces my primary File Server we'll be back on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS and that's a known working configuration.

I'm not getting full core utilization all of the time. I was for the first 3 days but for the past 10 or so I'm only seeing about 60% core utilization so my run time per day varies anywhere around 30~40 days per day when it should be in the high 50's. PPD and tasks finished don't scale linearly with this reduced run time. They're only down about 20%

So about 60% run time but 80% the points. Doesn't make sense. RAM is allocated. Storage isn't full. CPU run time is 100% and CPU % is something like 94%. No idea what the problem is.

BOINCStats reports around 29~30K/PPD which is about what I'd expect from it so...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

See above - I didn't actually buy any of this - just should have told you I had rather than admitted I was running the GPUs to fsck with your head 🤪

BTW - analyzing the WCG GPU traffic a GTX1060 6B should yield 350-400k BOINC PPD. Downhill, with a tail-wind and 64-byte udp packets of course.

You succeeded either way. First I saw 225K then 300K I'm like "WTF is he running over there? 🤔"

I need to get my 2nd R9 290X online then (and hope it's not borked) see if I can get it earning me some points on one of my 24/7 nodes. Probably the O.C.ed 5960X rig.

I understood 64-byte UDP packets though. Though usually with a 1500MTU they're 1492 bytes IIRC. Unless we're talking about just the header information...

It's how unscrupulous vendors used to inflate performance of networking gear back in the day - by using packet generators with small UDP packets to show unrealistic forwarding rates.

Couldn’t resist those bundles on Ryzen CPUs and motherboards. Picked up a 3600x and a Gigabyte Aorus Pro WiFi b450m. The 3600x went in one of the kids motherboards and the 2700 that fell out of the motherboard went in the b450 in a micro ATX case that was sitting empty. So another 16 threads for WCG!

Not too bad at 90W at the wall.

Upped all my systems to 1GB/thread while memory was still cheap and that’s allowed me to re-purpose a i5-6400 motherboard in another empty micro ATX case with some 4GB DDR4-2400 sticks that fell off the bottom of the RAM upgrade. Only another 4 threads but every bit helps so that puts me up to 102 threads.

I see @miker07 is back on WCG with his army of Threadrippers, 3950 and he seems to have won the lottery and added a 5950x as well. It will still take him a little while to roll past me though 😀

I'm regretting not picking up a another Aorus Master and 3950x while that sale was on though but I want to keeps some $ around for when my number comes up in the queue at EVGA for a 3080.

OK, something is SERIOUSLY wrong with the new EPYC 7601 server.

It's just deteriorating day by day, like WTF?

I'm thinking, and hoping, that the issue is the fact I'm using a USB stick as a boot drive. I'd love to use iPXE network boot but the system doesn't want to play friendly with Mellanox FlexBoot and I don't have a Intel X520 laying around.

I also haven't figured out how Intel iPXE wants to communicate with a DHCP server so I'd have to troubleshoot that.

Grrr...

Nice, I am still trying to hold out for a 5900x or 5950x but did cave and picked up a 3950x and a 3600x at fire sale prices here.

Wait for the 3070ti and/or 3080ti to get released then get on those queues ASAP.

Grrr...

I haven't played around with BOOTP in literally a decade. Likely you need to set some custom attributes on the DHCP server to point it to the TFTP server for the boot image and the system, DHCP and BOOTP servers should ideally be on the same network segment or you would need helper addresses on the system's gateway to forward the system's layer 2 broadcast traffic to them.

Nice, I am still trying to hold out for a 5900x or 5950x but did cave and picked up a 3950x and a 3600x at fire sale prices here.

Wait for the 3070ti and/or 3080ti to get released then get on those queues ASAP.

Kinda the plan, would love to jump up to a 3080 Ti.  My former 1080 Tis serve me very well.  Right now, just chilling out on my lappy with a 2070 Max-Q and the aging Titan X Pascal to hold me over.

I'm not really in need for another high core count chip.  Still plenty fine with my 1950X and E5-2670V3 if I need to throw some encoding at or the like.  Which is my main plan for the 1950X, taking that from the main computer and re-purposing it into encode/network file server/etc.

Just no luck on a newer GPU at a decent price yet.

Think I put myself into ever darn queue at EVGA for a GPU.

Still not a lot of movement on the EVGA Queues. I'm in for a 3080 and 3070 Blacks and it looks like months before I'll get close.

:I  Yeah...

I been in a few queues since Nov and Dec.  I could of bought a 3090 early on, but I was overseas and didn't want to just have a GPU just chilling out in a shipping box.

Grrr. My main system running GPU Job’s on WCG stopped working at 06:00 today. Apparently when I set it up I didn’t completely kill all the Ubuntu auto-upgrade crap and when I eventually noticed it wasn’t working 12 hours later I discovered nvidia-smi was reporting that the library’s didn’t match the driver version.

In other words it upgraded both the libs and driver but a reboot was needed to load the new driver.

For my own setup that I have tested working on another server is FlexBoot (iPXE 1.0.0+) where-in it boots to a iSCSI Target. TFTP isn't needed nor a OS img.

I actually plan on writing a tutorial about how I did this but if I dig up even a HDD it'll let me figure out if the OS drive is the culprit.

Alright, I won't have an answer for at least a few days if not a meek or more for validation but I've got a very old WD Blue 2.5" 1TB drive in the EPYC 7601 node now. I'm hurting for small SSD's but I have my fingers crossed the USB stick was the issue because if it's not I'm completely lost. Nothing but CPU, RAM, and MoBo left in the system. 😕

Edit: Well that only took about 2 hours to completely stop working. The behavior looks more indicative of a storage issue. I have no known good storage drives right now so it looks like my options are either get network boot working or go ahead with the platform upgrade and move this into my primary storage server and see if it starts behaving.

Maybe next Saturday. I don't have the dime durnig the week for that. Looks like the EPYC 7601 isn't going to be doing much crunching for the time being...

I know what you're talking about but I have no idea how I'd host the OS in RAM especially given this server has no UPS ATM.

Now that I'm thinking about it. I do have 5x 3TB HDD's that ZFS hasn't counted any errors on so the disks are good. Maybe I'll take that up tomorrow night. I'm frustrated and burned out right now. At least all my other systems are working.

Are we doing the Boinc Pentathlon this year? I did not see us registered, but I thought it was mentioned on here recently. If not that's fine, I just need to know if I need to plan for it, and make sure everything is ready, since it is only a little over a week away.

If we are participating, it looks like the Marathon project for the Pentathlon has leaked, SiDock. Site is not loading currently, but since it is a fairly new project we may not have a team setup. Once their site is back up someone will have to check on that, since I think we had to do that with at least 1 project last year. From what I found you can't bunker a lot due to only being allowed 2 tasks per cpu(thread or core, not real clear on that), and sounds like 3 day deadlines. It is a cpu project, so shouldn't have to worry about tuning settings, like gpu projects. @Ithanul @leadeater @Windows7ge @Gorgon

I assume we are. I haven't checked registration or anything else though.

If we can't worthwhile bunker for the marathon we may be able to bunker for another like Sprint, Javlin, or City Run.

If we can pull-off 6th again I'll be ecstatic.

@miker07I can participate yes, never did the registration before so was just assuming whoever did it last time would this time. Hope you all have increased your ammunition stores, mine will likely be a lot smaller this year.
