@Gorgon Just out of idle curiosity (definitely not because I think you're gunning to overtake me 👀) I see you have the 20 year diamond badge for OpenPandemics. How much higher are you above that exactly? :3

I’m at 29 years.  I doubt I’ll over take you as you’re still out-producing me by a wide margin.

I’m surprised @miker07 hasn’t overtaken me yet as he appears to have moved his CPUs back to WCG.

I lost a 2700 and 2600x to upgrades for the kids’ gaming computers and those rotten kids won’t run BOINC or F@H for me.☹️

Maybe not overall on WCG but you're somehow on my ass for OpenPandemics. I'm "only" at 31 years here. Did you strike a deal with @leadeaterto borrow some of his work servers? I always took him for the mafia type.

Miker's kind of sneaky. I don't know what his goal is anymore. At this point I think he's gunning for 1st.

Ah, run it as a service in the background and only during periods of inactivity. Tell them it was in the terms & conditions for giving them computers.

Given she has not been in for months, I'd say she is not active. Perhaps it's time for a new team leader 🤔

You'd need to talk to a mod about that, @Spotty or  @TVwazherewill probably be able to better advise

Not dead, just working on my Diamond (50 year) badge for Open Pandemics but that’s like watching paint dry as it takes forever. At 46 years so should be there in a few weeks.

I don’t think BOINC here is dead but I suspect it’s more like folks are concentrating their CPU resources on Rosetta and WCG which support COVID research but most of the GPUs have gone over to F@H

Spoiler

In all seriousness after this years BOINC Pentathlon you will have a very real shot at passing me in subsequent months. I experience all four seasons where I live and the summers get HOT. I can't run the servers/nodes full-tilt all year round as you seem to be able to. Expect my current output to be cut in less than half until the end of October~mid November.

It's also worth noting though that not all WCG projects give points evenly. Some give more than others and I can tell you OpenPandemics which is the sole project I've been working on since last May isn't the best one so if I swapped projects I could surpass your output right now. >:)

But I want the 100 year diamond badge for OpenPandemics so I don't plan on going anywhere for a while longer.

You must be well on the way to the 100 year badge by now. I just got 50 a little while ago.

I'm sticking with OpenPandemics as well.

Just picked up a 3950x on a wicked sale bundled with another AM4 motherboard to replace my last Intel dual GPU motherboard that had a Pentium Gold 5500 in it. Gave up on waiting to buy a 3070 or 3080.

I feel you on managing the heat. I can deal with the 7 CPUs its just the 10 GPUs that I struggle with.

74 years. Every 3 days I go up another year. With the addition of this AMD EPYC CPU I hope to drop that to every 2 days.

The layout of my house isn't ideal for a server rack full of high heat output servers. It's good for the winter. Not good in the summer. There's really nothing I can do about it at this time so you will have all summer to pass me after the Pentathlon. If I had to give you an estimate. My daily output will probably end up somewhere around 30~35K/day.

Admittedly that's still no slouch of a daily output but I could do so much more if I had a better means of managing the heat. 😕

Nice, I didn’t realize you actually got an Epyc. Thought you were just taunting me 😀

I know you’ve got a lot of older dual Xeon systems. Is this your first foray into AMD and, if so, how are you finding it? For me, from strictly a value proposition, I’m sticking with Ryzen on AM4. Threadripper is tempting but I don’t have a use for all those PCIe lanes so the cost differential when you factor in the premium for the motherboard just isn’t worth it.

The only Intel system I’m still running, aside from a i5 6400 in my test box, is my daily driver with an e3-1231v3 in a SuperMicro X10-SL7-F. 6 years old at this point and has survived migrating fro XP Pro through Windows 7 (only for a year), and finally to Win 10. I occasionally look at upgrading it but it still does everything I need.

Its not just the core count on AMD but the efficiency brought by of the 7nm process node versus Intel stuck on 14mm++++++++

I do have EPYC. But I was also taunting you. :3 and well, she doesn't POST ATM. I've tried three different kinds of RAM and 2 PSU's. It's either the motherboard or the CPU. Leaning (and hoping) it's the motherboard.

Dual Xeon LGA2011 & Dual Xeon LGA2011-v3. My first venture into AMD actually started with my first custom PC using the AMD Phenom x2 B55. From there I upgraded to FX-8150 -> i7 3930K -> i7 5960X -> TR 1950X. Strictly servers though this is my first taste of an AMD server platform. I wanted to play with Opteron but @leadeatertalked me out of it. 😛 I can't tell you how I feel about EPYC yet but given TR is essentially a cut down version of it I love it. I can pass GPU's to VMs on my desktop and for what this server will be doing all those 64 PCI_e lanes will go to good use. (So many SSD's 🤤)

And I like that I can put up to a 64 core CPU in this motherboard (Supermicro H11SSL-i). It's both Naples & Rome (7001 & 7002 series) compatible with word of being capable of handling Milan (7003) as well. I was tempted to go dual AMD EPYC but again @leadeater talked me out of it as the primary function of this server might actually be hindered by a dual socket configuration.

I want to play with LGA3647 but it's so freaking expensive and the platform as a whole doesn't make a lot of sense unless you need hexa-channel memory.

If you've poked at my BOINC stats you might notice everything is running Linux. I already know if I had Windows installed on my clients my numbers would be lower. NGL after spending enough time with it I'm preferring CLI over GUI. The ease of automation on Linux is amazing.

That’s a bummer ‘bout the new system. Had that with the mobo I got with the 3950x - wouldn’t post with a 2700x and 2 GPUs installed. Turned out the dual GPUs were the issue and a firmware (BIOS) update on the motherboard fix it.

Too bad it’s not a -F so you don’t have access to a BMC. SuperMicros tech support is a bit difficult to engage but if you can get hold of them they’re first rate.

Yeah, only my daily driver is running Windows here. Well that and a vM on my ESXi that’s an iTunes server for the wife’s AppleTV.

I work in CLI at work and have done so for years so I’m right there with you in preferring it.

Good, the newest ones of those were crappier than the generation before it and both were garbage compared to LGA1366 and newer lol.

I was wondering if my issue was CPU incompatibility but everything says it's not.

BMC (Baseboard Management Controller) as in IPMI? It has one, has an event log too but it doesn't say what's wrong. I tried remote desktop via the IPMI but it just brings up a window with no signal. I just finished sending their support another message. I've been in touch with them since I first found out it wouldn't POST. My biggest fear right now is the possibility the CPU might be vendor locked. It shouldn't be but...

I've used Windows my entire life but I decided I wanted something new about two years ago and I just haven't looked back. Most/everything runs some distribution of Debian. Except a very special project that this server is holding up that uses FreeBSD. :3

I tried to talk a couple people out of buying them but they didn't listen to me.

You cheated though! You used like 72U worth of LGA2011/LGA2011v3/LGA3647 servers from your workplace. 😠

@Windows7ge Btw I finally got those 8 DL560 Gen 8's built with 4x E5-4650 + 512GB ram but sadly I won't be able to use them for BOINC, or basically any of the servers at work I was previously using. We've put them all in to an HPC service for our researchers to use so I'm likely going to limited to what I personally actually own now. Big sad.

NGL you alone were probably the reason we pulled off 6th place last year. I love that we gave SETI.Germany a run for their money. (or I think it was SETI.Germany anyways).

Oh well. We'll manage.

Also in saying that at some point I might look in to whether or not us creating a BOINC project would be of any use, even if we only keep it private and not let everyone in the world run it. We have a similar thing already going on but I forget the name of the software, doesn't sound nearly as good.

Personally I'd love to do it but would actually have to get buy in from the departments otherwise there would be no jobs to run lol.
