Apple Watch Series 5 Display: Inner Workings that made Always on Display a possibility + iPhone 11 Pro Display

Now, yes Always on Display on a smartwatch has existed before. But those were achieved by adding a second screen or by giving option to the user to have that feature enabled at the cost of significant battery life. Apple figured out a way to integrate two different technology and integrate it in such a way to get the best of both worlds

What Apple is actually doing here is mixing two different types of screen circuitry technology and getting the benefits from both. First, there’s low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS), the power-efficient tech found in many top-end OLED phone backplanes (including iPhones), which essentially controls whether a pixel is on or off.

 

Second, we have the more innovative Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide (IGZO) technology, which dictates the voltage supplied to each pixel, its brightness, and the particular mix of red, green and blue it’s using for its color. IGZO circuitry is already used in some Apple products, including iPads and MacBooks.

 

One of the end results is a variable refresh rate, as low as 1Hz (one refresh per second). Obviously that’s not enough to keep the second hand moving, but it is enough to tell you what the time is and how many steps you’ve done in a day. That lower refresh rate reduces power draw too, and combined with the dimmed brightness, the all-day battery life can be preserved.

 

The excellent power efficiency of LTPS, plus the way that IGZO handles lower display frequencies very well, is what helps make the Apple Watch 5 display special. Of course, it’s easier to do this sort of display circuitry manipulation on a smaller scale, so it might be some time before it appears in Apple’s phones and tablets.

But the LTPO isn't working alone, and according to Apple

They took their time, and they're not always the first, but when they do it, they do it in the best possible way with a bit of apple magic (aka innovation) and deliver the best widescale mass adoptable technology that sets the standard for everything else.

 

Pfft, Apple doesn't innovate, my ass.

Impressive. Now 120Hz Pro-motion display next year, and we've basically perfected the display technology. Intense smartphone competition has truly done wonders to the tech industry in the past decade or so, wouldn't you say?

People on the internet like to conflate the word innovate with the word invent. One means to do something that's never been done before. The other means doing something better than anyone has ever done before. 

 

So yes, Apple did not invent the always on display, but they did innovate upon it with the Apple Watch Series 5.

It still boggles my mind they couldn't figure out wireless charging but they can do this.

Got swmbo one last weekend. It really is superb tech. The screen is top notch, very clear and responsive.

If i recall the rumors from back then. I think Apple was waiting for wireless chargers to significantly get better than what we have today, more range, efficiency, less heat, etc, but I guess at one point (especially after AirPower) they figured that physics forbids anything better than what we have today unless we have room temperature superconductors or something

Not gonna lie, when I was watching the keynote and it was announced that the Series 5 would sport an always-on display, I stared long and hard at my Series 3. While I thought back in the days of the Series 4 that the Series 4 was no more than a Series 3 with fall detection, the Series 5 is a whole other beast.

I really can't. I bent over backwards at the the price of the Series 4 which is why I ended up with a Series 3 instead. Couldn't warrant spending that much on a watch with how much money I make, priorities didn't align.

No I was referring to AirPower. It was for sure a product and was even in some literature. They were trying to have wireless charging on a pad that didn’t need individual coils

They had too many coils stuffed into it to allow for any orientation charging. But due to overheating, reliability, efficiency and communication and ultimately the lack on Apple level polish they usually have in all their products, they scrapped it. But honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Apple does still have small team working on it

The inactive watch faces are mostly black. Wherever they have lines of pixels turned on, they can just keep shifting it occasionally, and turn off the pixels that were on the previous period

Bought my mother a series 5 to upgrade from her 2, and it's great.

Although I'm holding out for the Titanium versions to arrive in Ireland. At the moment we're limited to Aluminium only. That or I'll try and wait for series 6.

While I think the Series 5 would be a fantastic upgrade from my Series 2....the reality remains that my Series 2 does most of what I want it to. 
 

I’m still 2 years too young to use the erratic heart rate features, my Series 2 can still last 2 days on a single charge, the Series 2 and Series 5 can track the same workouts, they are both absurdly water resistant (up to 50m for the Series 2), they both provide the same basic features (Siri, notifications, etc). 
 

And sure, while the Series 5 does all of these things faster and with a bigger screen.....unless I break this thing or the battery dies....I plan to use it until it not longer pairs with an iPhone.

I watched the keynote and when they announced always-on display I said "I want this", especially since I'm on iPhone now anyway. One of main reasons why I never even considered any former Apple Watches. Having a blank thing on a wrist just looks so silly. Apple Watch 5 on the other hand, looks beautiful. In dark you can clearly see it's a screen since it has a nice glow, you can see time without wrist bending and bunch of configurable dials give you tons of options for basically any mood. I have bunch of minimalistic dials with only time, date and battery life, others with even less and some with tons of everything. And of course the Mickey Mouse because why not :D They are all just few swipes away. I also thought 1 day battery life would be a problem, but I basically place it on a charger  while I'm showering and it's full in like half an hour or so (80-90% as much as I charge it). I wear it over night instead of charge it to track sleeping and just to not have it at 100% charge entire night. I like it a lot and the display is indeed amazing. Visually and functionally. It is a bit funny though that Apple Watch has a pressure sensitive screen, something they sacked on iPhones...

My aluminum series 2 only has case damage from calcium deposits from our water getting under the shock case I have on it. If I weren’t using a shock case, it would probably pretty clean. (assuming I didn’t bang it into anything)

The Series 5 feels like Apple at its best, where it waits to implement a feature until it can be done properly and beats everyone else.

 

Virtually every other always-on watch display has at least one big caveat to it.  It's always on, but your battery life tanks.  It's always on, but it's monochrome.  It's always on, but you can only see the time.  You don't make those sacrifices here; it's similar battery life, in colour, with all your complications (at least the first-party ones).  And it sounds like rivals might not catch up any time soon.

 

I have an S5 myself, and it's pretty slick to see in action.  Like you can finally show off the full style of your watch.

I hear you.  I'd say this: if having a good smartwatch is very important to you, and you're not too particular about OS choices, it'd be worth getting an iPhone.  But I wouldn't get an iPhone if you were merely curious or would be truly happy with what's available on Android.

That was actually part of the testing process of the Original Apple Watch. The worst effects of soap and shampoo would be on the hands if you had one of the fabric straps.

My series 3 gets covered in various automotive oils and fluids. No issues other than breaking a screen a few weeks back. However I don't shower with it. I usually end the day with a fairly pronounced watch outline in my wrist. Need to get that cleaned. 

 

My main knock on my apple watch is the lack of a always on display. So I will probably hop up to the series 5 this year, upgrade from my iphone x next year.

My aluminum series 2 only has case damage from calcium deposits from our water getting under the shock case I have on it. If I weren’t using a shock case, it would probably pretty clean. (assuming I didn’t bang it into anything)

I have dive watches with 300m water resistance and I don't shower with them. Apple watch is water resistant to just 50m. I'm not gonna push it, besides, soap doesn't help gaskets remain well with time and it's a perfect time to charge it anyway since I don't need it that moment. Also be aware that these numbers mean static vertical dive to those depths. Pressurized water, impacts on water surface and forced movement at depths less than specified can cause water to get in anyway. Just a note tot hose who actually swim with it and might want to dive with it too.

Yes, yes you can. You can set it the way Apple Watch 4 works. Though there is no point unless you have a special reason because battery life is allegedly the same. You just look like a dork having blank watch looking thing on a wrist...

 

Display has these settings:

- "Always on" (certain parts like seconds hand and animations still pause and get dimmer after some time)

- "Always on" with hidden sensitive complications (like heart rate)

- Wake screen on wrist raise (like Apple Watch 4)

- Wake screen on crown up (probably same as Apple Watch 4)

- Wake screen on tap (for 15 or 70 seconds, there is also "Always" which I'm guessing keeps it awake forever, same as Apple Watch 4?)

- Screen has 3 brightness levels, but there seems to be an ambient light sensor because I still notice brightness changes depending on lighting conditions even when set to lowest setting.

 

It is a bit funny that most of these settings are under "General" instead of "Display and Brightness" menu on the watch itself.
