Google reveals fistful of flaws in Apple's iMessage app

A team of bug-hunters at Google have shared details of five flaws in Apple's iMessage software that could make its devices vulnerable to attack.

In one case, the researchers said the vulnerability was so severe that the only way to rescue a targeted iPhone would be to delete all the data off it.

Another example, they said, could be used to copy files off a device without requiring the owner to do anything to aid the hack.

Apple released fixes last week.

But the researchers said they had also flagged a sixth problem to Apple, which had not been rectified in the update to its mobile operating system.

Apple's own notes about iOS 12.4 indicate that the unfixed flaw could give hackers a means to crash an app or execute commands of their own on recent iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches if they were able to discover it.

Apple has not commented on this specific issue, but has urged users to install the new version of iOS, which addresses Google's other discoveries as well as a further range of glitches and threats.

"Keeping your software up to date is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your Apple product's security," it said in a statement.

News site ZDnet - which was first to report the matter - noted that the level of detail shared by Google about the other bugs could be enough to let bad actors craft exploits to take advantage of them. Users should download iOS 12.4 "with no further delay," it added.

So, while things like these bugs are almost certain to be around in many pieces of software no matter who they've been made by, some of them at least seem to be quite major bugs, albeit 5 of the 6 have been fixed. If you've got an iPhone/iPad/whatever and haven't updated to iOS 12.4, now might be a good time to do it.

Can anyone else imagine Natalie Silvanovich sitting in a secret KGB bunker deep under Petropavlovsk, surrounded by Keyboards and screens with linux terminals and "the Matrix" streaming down and saying something like -

"Now Comrade Epple, ve vill see about these.... vulnerabilities."

I don't think they have to yell considering the first sentence you put. 5+ years on a device or 2 if you are lucky from Google.

Fundamentally incorrect as your assumption is that Google can patch any flaws in its operating system in a reasonable time frame. Which we all know they cannot, meanwhile Apple controls 100% of iOS update deployment. Meaning any vulnerabilities that arise in iOS will always be patched sooner than a similar vulnerability discovered in Android. Not to mention that said patch will always help more people because of how unified iOS deployment is compared to fragmented Android.

Yeah people keep claiming an apple device never gets a virus, but when it does everyone says "bUt iT gOt pAtChed!" Nothing is perfect and its good Google is testing their security.

When you talk about Androids that means ones from everyone though, whereas iOS only runs on Apple hardware. @DrMacintosh Some OEMs lied about the update, not all of them. If you buy a google phone, the patches will be fixed within a short period of time. People claim Apple has better security then other companies. It gets just as many Viruses :

Still seems like the average up to date iPhone will be more secure than the average Android. By some OEMs they mean most of them, in that article there were only 3 or so OEMs that didn't just skip on security updates, the majority did.

^^^ Android has a lot more freedom to be something better than iOS, but OEMs and/or end users (if you root and run a custom ROM and such) have to make it that, and the majority do not. Apple is usually better at patching and supporting devices than the majority of OEMs that sell Android devices.

Sure you might be able to get more out of an iPhone but I don't live near an Apple store to get the battery replaced and i'd rather Apple not slow the phone down without telling me after a year or so.
