Google reveals fistful of flaws in Apple's iMessage app

Never said they weren't. Just that security glitches are less common and on average, fixed faster than the extremely fragmented android ROM setup the 12 bazillion OEMs have going right now. The facts are iOS has a lot of security advantages over Android, namely the aforementioned lower market share + walled garden (less of a market for malware makers and it's more painful to make said malware), on average faster fixes and longer device support, and there's no fragmentation because only Apple makes iOS devices so they're in complete control of every version of iOS, and every device to support the latest version can update to it right away (there's often a delay or devices don't even get the latest version of android if you stick with OEM ROMs and updates). 

There's a lot of things Android does that iOS cannot, a lot of stuff you can argue is better than iOS, but the security of your average android device is gonna be worse than the average iPhone.

It took a lawsuit for Apple to even admit the devices were even being throttled, and i'd rather the phone turn off at 20% than the phone being significantly slowed down the whole time i'm using it.

No one is saying that they aren't. What DrMacintosh is saying is that Android's fragmented nature and how OEMs handle updates makes getting security patches out very inefficient vs Apple's walled garden approach. Apple is able to release an update and have it go out to every supported phone at once, no delays. On Android, Google releases an update and then OEMs need to modify it to work on their custom versions of Android and decide whether or not they want to bother updating phones more than a year or two old. It takes a lot longer for security updates to go out to Android devices than iOS.

Naturally, it is a more 'open' OS that allows a greater degree of flexibility and freedom. I'll go out on a limb here and say that the majority of Android users see computers as more of a hobby than a tool used for the sole purpose of getting work done. These people understand the threat they face simply walking into a wifi cafe and usually will act accordingly.

 

edit:  If you're completely computer illiterate or need something with no frills that 'just works', then yes iOS is for you. By the way, if you honestly believe Apple is going to go out of their way to patch security flaws when there is no threat of litigation, you're sadly mistaken.

I'd much rather have a functioning device. What if you need to call 911? Oops too bad. Or you could get 20fps less in your games and still be able to call for help. They weren't doing it to simply make people upgrade.

The average Windows PC is less secure than your average Linux one, but people still use Windows a heck of a lot more, because there's a ton of other things it does better for their use case than Linux does. My beef is with people who refuse to give iOS an edge at all because they hate it for some reason. It has an edge in privacy and security vs your average android, but there's a lot of other reasons people prefer an OS over another. I chose iOS because it just works for me, I'm assuming you're an Android user and probably chose it because you'd rather a more open OS and are perfectly capable of accounting for any security shortcomings on your device. I know a lot of techie people also run custom ROMs with faster security updates and such for just that reason.

I apologize but I have a hard time believing they are any different from every other corporation out there that puts profit over user security and software bugs most people don't understand. Again, look at how they handled the CPU throttling issue to conserve battery life - they were betting on the average iphone user not understanding what throttling even means.

The average Android user either never uses a PC or thinks of them as a tool. Android is THE most popular phone OS on the planet. Do you seriously think that 100s of millions of people are highly tech literate?

 

Apple never likes to admit there is a problem. Even when they fix something they don't talk about what was fixed or admit that there was a problem that had to be fixed. Its a hold-over from Steve Job's mentality that really needs to go.

Different means to the same end. Apple doesn't patch security flaws for fear of people taking legal action (and thus losing them profit), they patch them for fear of people not buying their stuff anymore (therefore making the platform better for their user base is better for Apple too). Apple rolls in money, being sued wouldn't really hurt them too badly. It's their users leaving and prospective buyers passing on Apple products that's more of a threat. This specific scenario is a proper win-win, Apple wants people's money like any good business does, so it makes and supports devices people like so they'll remain loyal and keep giving them money. Same reason the whole Apple ecosystem with everything from iCloud to AirDrop and AirPlay and all the other interconnected hardware and software exists. Its in their best interest to push privacy and security and their interconnected ecosystem, that attracts people with money and keeps them loyal, meaning they give Apple more money. Same reason Android OEMs have pushed out smartwatches and there's the google home and all the chromecast devices and the many smart home devices and such. The more your ecosystem appeals to current users and prospective users, the more money you rake in. Fucking over your userbase or delaying stuff till you're sued about it is bad for business. See said battery controversy and how many people quote it as a reason they don't want an iPhone, that was a mess up on Apple's part and it's cost them some possible buyers (a lot of people who quote that as a reason never bought iPhones before anyways, so I doubt it's a massive amount of buyers lost).
