Time to Ditch Chrome??

Maybe so according to the Washington Post tech columnist Geoffrey Fowler.  Pretty mind boggling amount of tracker cookies in one week's time:

My tests of Chrome vs. Firefox unearthed a personal data caper of absurd proportions. In a week of Web surfing on my desktop, I discovered 11,189 requests for tracker “cookies” that Chrome would have ushered right onto my computer but were automatically blocked by Firefox. These little files are the hooks that data firms, including Google itself, use to follow what websites you visit so they can build profiles of your interests, income and personality.

I've been a Firefox user since it was introduced and like that it's run by a community rather than a big corporation.  I've always wondered whether Google has alternative motives with Chrome.  That being said, I still run Chrome on my Android phone as it's a little faster to use than the Firefox app.

You ditch chrome you also ditch MS Canary which is based on the chromium source.  I can tell you both are sweet browsers.  But I also love Fox.  Im just happy both give me all the extensions I need.

Chrome and Canary pown at end of the day.  Especially the fact it gets updated frequently and by this time Chromium and Firefox are safe browsers.  Chrome gets a bit more TPC's rite now I think.

download Dissenter, although it's basically chrome but went the Brave route with the anti-free speech Google and Firefox extension stores bypassed too

Great joke. You are never safe with things like fingerprinting, flash cookies, WebRTC leak, and facebook cross site tracking. Firefox with select known addons, plus linux, plus a pi hole, and a VPN are getting you closer but using chrome at all is a bad idea

Generally no, although blocking scripts that set the said cookies can result in cookies not being set. You have to use something like Ghostery or Privacy Badger to block cookies. Or set your browser to block 3rd party cookies by default which is a smart idea for almost anyone.

Basically for the past 4+ years Ghostery is a must for me on every device. By blocking every ad, pop-ups and background scripts(Which I'm not sure it does it 100% on the extention but on the mobile version you can) it even helps with loading pages faster and smoother. Having it as a standalone browser on my phone makes for much safer *wink wink* website surfing so I can enjoy myself not worrying that hot babes in my area are looking to chat with me

I wouldn't say all cookies are bad, but the ones used to track user activity are pretty bad.

It was never time to switch to Chrome, actually. People just did anyway. It's designed to spy on you from the ground up. Just like every other service from Google. If you get something for free, you are the product and all that.

 

Keep an eye out for qutebrowser. It's looking very promising, once extensions are supported. I'm already using it for sites I trust. It's an amazing experience, if you're a power user.

I switched to Firefox earlier this month anyways, when it was announced that Chrome was essentially going to kill adblocks.  

This just helps me realize how much more of a good decision that was.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

Been on FF since I swapped to Linux early this year. Not going back either

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Maybe something like the Brave browser is the best alternative to have the best of both worlds. I just wish it was released sooner. Then it could have had a bigger impact on the way we use the web.

I don't believe in blocking most ads because that's stealing from creators, but I do think Chrome is more permissive than it should be when it comes to data.  Firefox, Opera and Safari are better choices if you value privacy.

If an innocuous banner or text link ad is an "irritation," you need to develop thicker skin.  Pop-ups, automatic video ads, full-window ads?  Sure, those are annoying as hell and don't respect you.  But I'm not going to steal money from sites that need it just because I may have to scroll down slightly to start reading.

 

And here's a question... if you believe all ads are bad, will you promise to pay subscriptions for all sites you want to visit, without exception?  Even if it means spending a couple hundred euros per month?  Because those sites will have to make money somehow.

Banner across youtube video with microscopic close button also falls into that category. And don't get me started with unannounced video ads on Youtube that start in the middle of video you're watching at twice the volume. Yeah, all shit like this needs to fucking go. Brave never blocked static banner for Madrina's coffee here on forums and I was ok with it. It was just there on the side, not bothering me even though it took the longest to load and gets parsed on every subforum visit or opening of forum. Which also made it annoying in a way.

I'll pay the less than 1 cent per visit that all of those adds together give the content creator for me visiting their site, if I can do it anonymously.  Otherwise, consider it blocked.  I've stopped bothering with several websites due to their stupid harassing ads and tracking and "can't view in private mode, turn off privacy or log in to continue in private mode".  Screw that, those people don't deserve ANYTHING.

Declining to visit a site is certainly fine -- I'm more irked by those people who feel entitled to visit a website without ads but somehow expect it to keep running without paying for a subscription or making donations (and it might be more than a few cents a month).  You don't get to steal whatever you like from a store because you find their TV ads obnoxious, so why do you get to leech off a site's work because you don't like that they need ads to make their content free?

i switched to opera from chrome a few days ago. although the cpu usage is a bit higher, i say it is much better
