Candy Crush Saga Makers Go After The Banner Saga. For Real.

Not content with trying to own the word "Candy", King.com, the makers of Candy Crush Saga, also want to own the word "Saga". So they've have taken legal action against strategy game The Banner Saga.

 

On December 27, 2013, King.com filed a "Notice of Opposition" with the US Patent and Trademark Office. It says that because King has 13 trademarks with the word "saga" in them, Stoic's colourful strategy game isn't allowed to use the word.

As part of the filing, King allege the following. And I promise you, this is a real document, not a joke.

screw candy crush. This is getting way out of hand. they going to trademark every word that is mentioned in the game or what?!

Hold on, so because someone's decided to become a competitor, the original creator of candy crush, is suing them for trying to compete in a market?

Remember when Bethesda sued over the game Scrolls because they thought it would cause confusion with the Elder Scrolls even though the games have NOTHING in common.

Wait what? The games aren't even similair, the names are not even similair wtf. So every game now has to have a unique name with no overlap or something? If this works it will be a problem for every game with "Fighter", "Zombie" or "Dead"

If I was a judge on this I would not only throw it out of court, but put them in jail for contempt of court and fine them for abusing the court system. Obama if you're reading this appoint me as a judge I'll fix this in no time.

Screw this entire genre of video games. These mobile "Free to Play" games with micro-transactions are disgusting. It's a sleazy and very greedy business model that needs to die.

This is why US patent law need serious reform.  Here in Europe we can't patent a word.  Who thought it was a good idea to let people patent words anyway when they came up with these laws.

You can't in the US either. This is not a patent claim, but a trademark infringement claim. Fundementaly different.

What are they going to trademark next? The word "the"? Candy crush is one of the worst games I have ever seen! I have literally seen scratch games that are better than candy crush, and they haven't trademarked anything!
