NVIDIA Driver 425.31 released, bringing DXR support to some Pascal and non RT Turing GPUs

Curious to see how Radeon VII would perform with DXR compared to GTX 1080Ti given they are otherwise roughly the same performance in rasterized graphics, but compute wise, Radeon VII is much more of a brute compared to 1080Ti.

that would be interesting

someone should start comparison thread lol

Also further to those going "this is just to show you how much Pascal or non-RT Turing sucks to make you want to buy an RT Turing card"

Both AMD/ATI and NVIDIA have released tech demos of their graphics cards, usually designed around the expectation you would run these on their flagship models. There was nothing stopping you from running them on slower cards of the generation, or even cards of a previous generation as long as it supported the necessary software API features. You could also argue those solely exist to show you how much your not-current-flagship hardware sucks and you should go buy the latest and greatest hardware.

The first card I got that supported DX11 was the GTX 460 SE. I immediately downloaded and played with all of the DX11 compatible demos and stuff just to play around with them. Did the GTX 460 SE run them more or less "meh"? Yes. Did I care or regret my decision and should've went for a more powerful card? No. I got to play around with the new features dammit.

they should of released this like 6 months before launching the 2xxx series cards with dedicated ray tracing. give a chance for people to check it out and/or get excited for better hardware for it to work better.

Now I'm curious if I can get 60fps in 3440x1440 in Shadow of the Tomb Raider with my 2x1080ti ?

I guess I will have to reserve some time to update stuff.

People asked for backwards compatibility. No "locking down" the features to RTX cards. Well, here you go.

Hope you enjoy your 5 fps.

Doing driver and other updates now, while downloading stuff too.

I have to wonder if DXR will eventually be another setting parallel to or even a part of normal low/'medium/high/ultra settings as support increases. It will also be interesting to see if AMD can come up with driver update support for RX and/or Vega cards depending on the actual performance that can be realised.

Considering how the DXR Demo Epic did at GDC this year, it's entirely possible to tailor the experience for the last-gen cards.

I'd be taking the Nvidia-released demos with a grain of salt, since they're likely built for the RTX cards to show off their power.

You don't need the driver for that.

A modder made a shader pack (its in alpha stage atm) that manages it without requiring specific hardware to work.   Look up SEUS PTGI.

Yeah i knew, I was just being silly.

Justice RTX Tech Demo

Technically most of the benchmark was ~8 -12 fps (end scene had 75 bcause of gsync XD ) so 22FPS AVG is way to high as there are scenes with no RTX whatsoever.

Settings:

RTX on @ 1080P

GFX card: Zotac 1060 6gb mini maxed out ( 116% p-State set to Zero all over - max core, max memory (2100 / 4800)

CPU Ryzen 5 2400

Tools used :

Nvidia Profile inspector Version 3.3.6.2 to set P state to allow 0 constantly

(newer versions do not allow this anymore i think)

Results:

Quote

11-04-2019, 21:11:00 Justice_rtx_demo.exe benchmark completed, 2124 frames rendered in 95.204 s
                     Average framerate  :   22.3 FPS
                     Minimum framerate  :    6.3 FPS
                     Maximum framerate  :   75.5 FPS
                     1% low framerate   :    5.7 FPS

This is actually running surprisingly well considering GTX 1080Ti has no actual ray tracing acceleration. The Star Wars Elevator was running at 15fps, 1080p. The Atomic Heart demo felt even smoother though I don't know what the framerate was there.

1080Ti

Reflections: 5 to 10 fps at 1440p

Justice: Typically 15-20fps in wider shots, can get higher in tighter shots. With RTX off it is pretty much locked at 60 fps.

2070

Reflections: demo seems capped at 24fps at 1440p. With GPU-Z in background, it was using around 60-70% core. Turning it up to 4k it drops down to 17fps at times but most of the time is still close to 24fps.

Justice: At 1440p RTX on, DLSS on, saw lows of 50fps, but capped most of the time at 60fps. With DLSS off, lows dropped more to around 35 or so. Subjective image quality, I think DLSS on looked better. When it was off, it looked relatively blurry and textures less visible.

In reflections, there is a grain effect to the rendition. I wonder if that is due to the RT process, or is it even intentional to give it a "film" effect alongside the 24fps cap.

With Justice, you can turn RTX on/off. When off, you lose a lot of the light reflections but not all of them, presuming they use historic techniques for some. I would not be unhappy with RTX off, but RTX does add to the visual experience.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut

Just ran the benchmark with FRAPS considering some reason RivaTuner and MSI Afterburner were not picking up the demo.
On my 6800K and GTX 1070 (+250 core, +100 mem, +20% voltage) I managed to get - drum roll please:
0 FPS minimum, 17 FPS Maximum with an Average of 10.054 FPS - at 1080p . . .
Ran better than I thought, but still a slide show really.

Now, the cynic in me is thinking that while Nvidia released this for non-RTX graphics cards, I think its more of an advert to show how bad your X GPU runs Ray Tracing, you could get so much better by upgrading to a new RTX 2060 + GPU.

I'm not even going to humour turning this on.

I'm not going to sacrifice resolution for one setting. The step down in resolution would instantly negate any improvement in visuals offered by RTX.

It's not something that I would turn on in game, I prefer running most settings on high at 1440p and getting 100+fps.

I'm more than happy to turn off a quality setting here or there to get an extra 20%fps and still keep most things maxed. RTX is just another one of those.

Awww, thanks for reminding me about ray traced Q2. Gonna try it now :D Don't have GTX 1070 tho (it's GTX 1080Ti). Might also be a good time to overclock it too :D

@Emberstone

Ok, here's the situation, Q2RT at 1080p is barely playable and not exactly enjoyable because the input lag is pretty severe. Movement is actually very smooth and so are the graphics, it just apparently takes too long to process all the rays which creates long frame times. Dropping down to 720p makes it fully playable, but it becomes quite blurry and painful for the eyes as a result. given GTX 1070 has a lot less grunt than GTX 1080Ti I think your only bet is 720p. You may try 1080p but I can assure you it won't be a pleasant experience gameplay wise. It's smooth enough for a walk through though and to observe the world.
