PSA: A reminder on why you should maintain copies of movies

So this serves as a good reminder that no matter which platform you purchase your digital content on, it is worthwhile to download a local copy to storage and not just count on having it available and retained in the distributors system.  Reminds me that I should probably see about getting more space on my NAS at home.  

OK, so then how do Valve allow people who have bought games that are later removed from the store to still download them?

I am both old and use a NAS,  although I still haven't found a method to back up all my dvd's that I actually like.

 

But lets be honest here, regardless of whether buying dvd's or paper books is better/worse,  its hard to argue that an app looks better than a  loaded bookcase and full rack of dvds.

I can't remember the last time I bought a dead tree book (hard copy book). I can carry hundreds of books with me in an small easily carried e-book reader, store even more on my computer, and easily back them up so I don't have to worry about losing them. Dead tree books are heavy and take up an incredible amount of room.

I think it goes beyond a rack full of blue rays.

I don't know many people who likes to watch several the same movies nowadays.

 

Attention span has became so low that even a movie like Blade Runner 2049 has been a commercial disaster because of its length (though it was not the case for Interstellar...)

Even if a movie length is not the problem, still, movies and music are like a nuggets box to many: it is literally consumption, you listen/watch one time, and then you move forward.

I may be under 50 but I have a slipped disc, Arthritis, I can't touch my toes and its a good day if I can put my socks on while standing up.  Because of the back issues I struggle to keep fit as I cannot do any form of physical exercise that raises my heart rate.  I have been told I have the body of a sick 60 year old or a semi normal 70 year old.

2049 was not a disaster because of the length...

 

PS, I'm also 1:1 Bluray (or better! Some disks are mastered poorly), or GTFO. But then again, I have like 5 BR disks currently, so I'm only just starting my collection.

It is A3 and uses so much ink, I think you paint the moon black with it.  The thing is massive. Best thing is I got it for a fiver in a fire sale!

I also have Google Maps [UK] Satellite... in... book... form. Only the one zoom level though. I was tempted for all 3 or more issues, but my budget or bookshelf did not stretch at the time. I may reconsider.

 

I also have a few more collections on great big books too. As you can see, I have a bit of a niche on that.

So dumb that such provider can lose some license over stuff they sell and customer suffers for it. And they wonder why people pirate stuff. 

Either way, physical or just a local copy as said, like I do is a good way to go. But yeah, I don't really watch movies/series any more anyway, would maybe go to cinema rarely that's it. No subscription streaming services like music and TV as well.

I can create copies of digital media and have it work on any device that has VLC available to it.

On the other hand, I can't create physical media and expect it to work on my blu ray players.

I can't lose the rights to use the media. If I lose my digital copy, I still have the physical copy.

and about losing the digital copy, you can lose a physical one too, and both would be gone with out a back up. Its not like you can go back to the store with your receipt and get another for free.

Losing a digital copy means something happened that renders the copy useless.

Losing a physical copy usually means that you misplaced it and can find it again.
