Intel makes 17 qubit quantum cpu

Not to be left out of the quantum computing race, Intel with the help a research center in Netherlands, QuTech, have came up with their very first quantum cpu. Intel's quantum cpu has the same number of qubits as IBM's, Google's has 20, while those designed by D'Wave like their newest the 2000Q contains 2048 qubits.

According to the QuTech researchers, qubits are so fragile that any unintended observation of them would cause data loss. This fragility requires that they operate at a temperature of 20 milikelvin, or 250x colder than deep space.

Intel said that it’s investigating two types of qubits right now: superconducting qubits and “spin” qubits.

The spin qubits resemble electron transistors and could be built in silicon, which would allow Intel to use its existing manufacturing processes to manufacture silicon-based quantum chips, too. However, this seems be more of a research idea at this point compared to the superconducting chip with 17 qubits that Intel has already built.

Intel believes that its lead in chip manufacturing will help the company bring practical quantum computers faster to market.

The company built a new architecture with improved thermal performance, reliability, and reduced radio frequency interference between qubits. It also used a scalable interconnect scheme that allows for 10-100 times more signal in and out of a chip compared to wirebonded chips.

Pretty sure this belongs in Tech News and Reviews, perhaps a Moderator or someone can move it.

 

Other than this being a little out of place, that's pretty neat! I'd like to see AMD compete with that.

Yeah, just click the little exclamation point at the bottom left and type "Wrong section. Move to News and Reviews." The Mods are usually pretty quick about it.

I report a lot of stuff to mods just because new users sometimes do things wrong accidentally. They don't get in trouble, they're just honest mistakes.

OT: Knowing Intel they will dump a lot of R&D Funding into this to get caught up with D'Wave.

The competition is strong now with this. :D

In theory even 100 or 1000 qubits should be able to vastly outperform any conventional computer at certain tasks, and this is one of the reasons quantum computing people get so annoyed with the sorta-kinda quantum computer that is DWave.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...
