What am I missing out on by being on i5-4690K

So I watched Luke's review of the 7700K and in the part where he said if you have an i7 from the last 1-3 years, don't bother, I started wondering, what am I missing out on by being on the i5-4690K?

 

Basically, I built my first gaming PC last year, and the mobo+DDR3 ram+i5-4690K were all given to be by my friend after he upgraded his rig (yes, I have very generous friends) and I've been tuning out anything SkyLake or DDR4 related. I got a RX-480, and it lets me play everything at either 1080p or 1440p, which is good enough for me, but I guess what I'm asking is, am I missing out on much by not having Sky/Kaby Lake and DDR4 and should I upgrade (to either KabyLake or Ryzen)?

The i5 would be a bottleneck if you were using a GTX 1080 or a Titan X (Pascal)

You missing YouTube 4K on the new intel cpu's athere then that not that much wait anther 1 year or 2 and see what happens to the Cpu market.

Nothing meaningful. Single-core performance is pretty much the same as a corresponding i7, you have slightly less cache but that doesn't really change much.

couldn't care less about kabylake. skylake is fine by me. but i am holding out for ryzen

I wouldn't worry about it, you have a pretty good CPU  :P

 

i7 users are mainly used for video editing and other kind of programs to get render time go by faster, and new skylake just for 4K Netflix streaming which is pointless... Pointless to me that is, unless you have a fast internet download speed and have 4K monitors and wishes to watch things in 4K then FINE. (Watching on Netflix, otherwise any other cpu would do fine for 4K like YouTube)

 

Bottom of the line: If your CPU is chugging down and you need a more powerful CPU, I'd get something more powerful. If your CPU is fine, then no need to change.

i would hold on to your setup for at least one more year and then there might be better options to upgrade.

Core i7 in newer games does benefit in that it has more headroom, more threads, more cache...in games like battlefield 1 and watchdogs 2 for example if you run a higher end GPU (by that i mean a GTX 980ti/1070/1080) you will get smoother gaming experience out of an i7 but the i5 you have is good and if you overclock it a bit when paired with a RX 480 GPU...in just about any game you can think of your limiting factor to performance will still be the GPU...so i wouldn't change platform right now, you're good.

Next time though...buy a CPU with more threads/cores if possible.

Meh, unless you feel like grabbing the 4790K, the next (platform) upgrade you get should at least be a hex core. Not worth going from an i5 to another platform with merely a quad. Skylake and Kaby Lake aren't particularly noteworthy improvements anyway.
