Experiences with non-techies

I am buying an 850 EVO, and of course since I can't buy it myself (and don't have amazon prime.)

I go to my mom who has a credit card and amazon prime. So she looks at what I want, and reads it. instead of asking me no questions asked, will u pay for it, she wants to know what it is. It took about 20 minutes to explain reads and writes, improved iops to my wd black etc... Then she asks u already have a drive... *facepalm* so then I finally order it!!!!

It's this kind of mentality that I hate from people. "If it works, why need something better?" Well cause I wanna do things faster. It's like convincing my mom  to get me a better monitor cause my 5:4 is not gonna cut it for CAD work but she says "At least you have a monitor, right?"

Don't worry, my friends flame the fuck out of me for 3 monitors.. And seeing one is in portrait...

"3 monitors is completely fucking pointless," "Having that many monitors is bullshit and wasting a monitor," "Why would you want portrait? Are you a lazy fuck who doesn't feel like scrolling? It makes no fucking sense," "Way to make a 3rd monitor useless and wasteful..."

When I had to use my 650ti I was back to 2 and my friends asked, "How is 2 monitors?" I replied with, "It's doable, but I ran out of room..." and he replied with, "Bullshit.."

They also say me overclocking my Strix killed it... It was the fucking power supply... Ignorant people irritate the fuck out of me...

prepaid credit cards are awesome.

They sound like they would be, now only if they were available elsewhere than in US only... :/  To many foreign purchases require credit cards, it's not even funny anymore.

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

Only downside is it costs $5 just for the card itself.

That doesn't sound bad to be honest. The availability outside of US is just an issue.

Nope it wasnt an add and that dude has 120k views.

I dunno but imho he has no idea what he is talking about.

This is the vid plus the one in the description. Makes 13min in total if you really want it :D

Edit: Oh btw, you guys think its a good laptop for casual use? ^^

Honestly I guess it looks okay, but honestly the fact that from the US Lenovo site it seems that it has Haswell-U CPUs so that sort of sucks. For casual use I might as well spend $1.5k  on a 512GB Retina MacBook which is literally what that laptop is only intended for, which I mean it could replace what I currently use my 2011 HP Pavilion g6 and I'd be happy but I'll have to skirt by with my HP when I do start using either Photoshop or Lightroom and there's no way a Core M would do any better in Ps or Lr than an i5 2430M.

When I told him I was going to crossfire 2 graphics cards he said he tried SLI once with 2 gtx 680's and said it was so bad he sold his second 680 and running one didn't change performance, asked him what games he plays, turns out all of them don't support dual cards.

Makes me cry.

Did you ask him if he used a SLI Bridge to connect the two graphic cards :P ?

Working as High school IT support - kid comes up to me for help.

Me: Hi, what do you need?

Kid: I need to connect my Macbook to the projector in a room can you help?

Me: What seems to be the problem? Is it plugged in yet?

Kid: The teacher said I need an adapter...

Me: Ah ok, do you know what kind?

Kid: Yes its a HDMI to windows port thing adapter.

Me: ._.

Kid: *points to a VGA port on my PC*

Me: .___.

that was beautiful. xD *hugs* im so sorry.

also, WHAT THE ACTUAL FLIPPER DIPPER DOODLE

at freegeek, we call it HD-15, because thats the official name and there are other connectors called VGA.

generally people call it VGA however.

what the hell with all three of my monitors saying HD-15 is ''RGB''

so what? is DVI and displayport both black and white or some shit???!!!!?!?!

yeah... i'm still rocking a dell CRT :(

dont get rid of it.

that thing is better than any 144hz monitor you can find.

what model is it? can we get pictures?

i'd prefer CRT at 30 hz over new shit at 240hz.

why?

the speed the pixels actually change are pretty much as fast as physically possible. it doesnt refresh as often. but it refreshes faster. (from my understanding)

if thers a 144hz CRT........ GIMME sexy smooth so guuuudddd.

tek syndicate (or maybe thier hardware channel) had a video about it all. check it out. i'll link it if you cant find it. :P

if i could pay ~~~20 bucks for a ''prepaid'' i could just run down to a 7/11 or plaid pantry and make deposits to with.... DUDE i would never touch my debit card.

(mainly because 1 i could buy shit online without my parrents permission, cause fuck them. xD and two, both of the banks my family uses in portland are like 20 30 minutes away... (including drive back))

I have had a permission to do purchases on my bank account ever since I turned 15, as before that my bank account as my mother's side account, but after that point of time I have gained my own independent one. While I'm still a minor, and live in a poor family, I can do purchases on my free will, as long as I don't go spending money on stupidity. So I'll just continue buying stuff with bank transfers or PayPal at most. Unfortunately most online stores and whatnot, especially foreign ones (say for example US, UK, Germany... Basically everything) have credit card as a requirement, which sucks as minors can't get them, and even if you are an adult, you have to have stable income (and as a student, this sucks). The idea of pre-paid credit cards is great, but unfortunately I have only seen them being available in US, no signs of them anywhere else.

So after looking at a recent poll on this form called Who is the most tech savvy in your family? and seeing every reply saying "Me!" I got a little curious.

What would you guy consider one of the dumbest, or funniest, computer related thing you've ever had to help someone less computer literate with?

Here's my story:

My neighbor called over to me one day telling me that an old friend of his was having computer issues saying that everything was running slow. So I went to take a look expecting to just come in, run some hard drive cleaning software, some anti-virus scans and be on my way.

I sat down at the computer and my neighbor's friend said "All these pages I go to load really slowly".

He was using Internet Explorer.

I took a second to explain to him why it was slow and that he should use a different browser (keep in mind, he was using windows XP and had like 1GB of RAM), to which he replied "Oh, I had no idea there were other browsers"

I promptly took all of his bookmarks from IE, downloaded Firefox (Or Chrome, I can't remember), put bookmarks back and let him try it out.

He replied "WoW! What a difference!"

I laugh and sigh a little as I walk towards the door to leave only to be stopped by him handing me €20 for what I did.

I did not deserve €20 for that

We just had a support call at work from an end user who couldn't close something. "Pressing escape won't get rid of it"

On checking in at her location, the concept of using the mouse to close an app using the cross button at the top right hand corner of it was lost on her.

"I didn't think you had to do that all the time."

Whoa.

Derp... Most storage devices don't come with SATA cables, it's usually only "upgrade packs". I mean, why include one with your storage device if motherboards come with loads of them anyway?
