Why do monitors need a HDMI port?

7412

Because not everyone has Type C thunderbolt/DP alt mode (yet).

The general consumer will need HDMI, for the coming years too (unless monitors supply a type C to HDMi, which I doubt they will).

Why don't all monitor manufacturers supply their monitors with type C, in addition to the other standards?

Because then graphics cards would need to use USB-C as their display out port, or consumers would need to buy a converter cable(HDMI, DP, DVI to USB-C).

they can but it's too new. A USB C port would be cool but not everyone has a USB C to display port or HDMI or whatever it is they're using. HDMI is super common and still useful.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Why can't they work off USB-C like everything else?

Intel NUCs connect to HDMI, so there's that.

...What?

Since when is USB-C the standard for monitors?

Graphics cards use DP and HDMI these days.

Consoles, HDMI.

settop boxes for tv, HDMI.

HDMI can carry audio and video which makes it ideal for most people.

Also USB-C is all over the place standard wise...

We are finally managing to leave VGA behind so it will take decades before we will get anywhere near usb-c being the next standard for a display.

Also, what exactly is everything else? I have like 1 usb flash drive that uses USB-C and I know 1 person in my family with a USB-C phone. Anything else uses either micro-usb or USB-A.

All NUCs have HDMI, but actually some of the newer stuff has USB Type C with DP alt mode (the older ones had Mini DP in addition to HDMI).

with VGA slowly (finally) dying, HDMI seems to be taking its place as "the universally compatible" standard that just about any device supports. it's present on any TV, just about any video outputting device has HDMI, DVI can passively convert to HDMI, etc...

in short... a monitor manufacturer not putting HDMI on their monitor in favor of usb type C is like a laptop manufacturer ditching all I/O in favor of usb type C, and then forgetting their own accessories no longer work with their laptop.

Ye, only devices I have access to that have USB-C are the 2019 MBPs we've gotten for a few peeps at work, and those all need the lovely dongles to do literally anything that requires another device physically connected to them, lol. I have a much better time with my 2012 MBP and it's much, much more universal USB Type A ports and standard ethernet boi. Do still need a mini-DP to HDMI dongle though. IIRC the Crosshair VII Hero I used to run had USB-C (and a B450 ITX board I had), but I've never used those ports ever. So defo confused on what "everything else" is supposed to mean.
