Intel next gen Xeon Scalable will use new sockets

Think I may have something to go along with this post. Pics are of an unknown Intel processor with a new socket type (Cascade Lake processor in pics for comparison). The new processor is slightly bigger and beefier with a new IHS that is taller than the CLX processors. 

 

If anyone can identify this processor please let me know!

There's many SKUs that could be, there isn't enough information to narrow it down without putting it in a system and getting more details like number of cores and cache sizes, but then you'd just know what it is so ?‍♂️

In them cpu pics, the notches are in different locations. 

One of them is from now 3467, the other is the new cascade lake or ice lake 4189.

The same as every bandwidth increase, it just allows you to cram more and faster stuff in the same package. Not everyone is going to use it but for those who do it's an important upgrade.

They can start with putting the memory there on its side or something, they take quite a bit of space that is close to the socket.

yes it's real, the i/o is also modular, that can be swapped out. But the whole thing is a concept.

Those "new" pins/pads look fake.

 

Intel: Wait, what features can we add?

Engineer: I've nothing, sorry, nope, nada.

Intel: But then what shall we add as a reason to make more pins?

Engineer: Oh, more pins? I can put a few on there, make some room, do we even need to connect them up to anything?

Intel: Need to connect them up? Great idea! Just increase the size, make a new socket, and plop the old chips in the middle... no one will know, right?

[Where have we seen that done before. ;) ]

Ive actually done a decent amount of research on the idea of TR4 ITX. In the standard ITX form factor it is more or less impossible. Let me clarify by saying it is possible in the sense than the socket is physically smaller than the ITX formfactor, but TR4 is such a massive socket that serious concessions would have to be made. VRM's would need to be stacked vertically in an add-in card (this isn't unheard of. Asus did this a while back), and you would only have room for 4 SO-DIMM slots unless you put some on the back of the board (also not new in the desktop space, and basically expected in laptops).

 

So, nothing insurmountable, the R&D just doesn't seem to be worth it to cram so much VRM performance and so much extra complexity in to a motherboard literally 10 people would buy.

 

Now, if we include the seemingly returning DTX form factor of motherboard things become much easier and honestly I see no reason as to why it wouldn't work. DTX, for the unitiated, is just ITX but the width of a standard ATX board. Mini DTX is also a thing, but AFAIK that is just ITX with 2 PCI-E slots.

If it helps -- when I wrote cookies I was also thinking biscuits.  Just here in the US we think of biscuits as fluffy mounds of baked, unsweetened flour to be eaten with meals and not with Tea.
