Malware for the Linux desktop. Yes, really.

how are those avoidable?

Don't update GPU drivers unnecessarily and switch Windows updates to the semi annual channel.

Yeah, if you go through these 20 unintuitive steps then Windows is idiot proof and user friendly!!1!1

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

That's just smart behavior with EVERY OS.

Have you tried installing an older version? As I said, bad drivers cause alot of these issues.

really? i've never had to do it with linux or macOS. in fact i ran beta's of both of those before and that was more stable than the regular release of Windows.

No, nor do I need to. It's easy to doubt anyone had zero issues with EVERY feature update on an OS, that could have been avoided by delaying for a short while.

Meanwhile the Linux community are still in denial that anything bad can happen.

Weird just how many linux web servers are compromised on a daily basis.

Linux has plenty of malicous software already

  Reveal hidden contents

like GNOME

Though huge part of them can be nullified by just running SELinux that limits what parts of the system every process can access.

SE Linux, gives me the willies thinking about it. Recently attended a Red Hat course, in the SE Linux training room you could almost feel the attendees agony.

that is true, but this topic turned into a debate around using official repo's...

Yeah I agree people are kinda overreacting at this, IMO the average Linux user would be less likely to get malware than the average Windows user.

I haven't had bluescreens in windows 10 related to drivers, but I don't download every available GPU driver.

At least linux updates do not wipe user files and whole partitions.... Plus you can always stick to LTS which is generally has an emphasis on stability, or debian which prioritizes stability and security above anything else. Windows is like Puppy linux, a very bad idea and a even worse joke.

also think there's a huge underlying hypocrisy in building your own computer and engaging with a community that mainly does tech troubleshooting and then whining about having to run one or two CLI commands every once in a while for system maintenance

Some users on this forum dislikes GNU/Linux and saw this thread as a chance to shit on it. Other people found their arguments stated to be flimsy and therefore it became a flame war.

Ah, so typical Linux discourse then. I swear, I've never seen a Linux discussion not become a flamewar.

It's just not Linux, but web servers in general (and mostly in the cases where the web code is rotten and exposes the server to vulnerabilities)

Linux has been getting targeted more and more for a good while now. I mean a huge percentage of servers out there are linux which means they contain valuable data.

Maybe tools targeting consumer linux distros are more rare, but that is because the other tools for linux servers works on them.

It's more about finding vulnerabilities rather than the classic "user" malware like this one

Also luckily enough, the security teams working on Linux distributions are a steap forward and system administrators should be quick to apply the latest patches

Not to mention the ones caused by bad configuration and the lack of hardening.....

But that's different,  because it's "Linux".
