Japanese official claims that "extra things" were found when disassembled Huawei's products

(Original news was in Japanese. I've only been able to read it with the help of Google Translate)

Source:

Yahoo! Japan News quoting Fuji TV. (in Japanese)

Apple Daily HK quoting Fuji News Net (in Chinese)

Quote

与党関係者は、「政府がファーウェイの製品を分解したところ、ハードウエアに『余計なもの』が見つかった」と話している。

(A ruling party official said, "When the government disassembled Huawei's products," extra things "were found in the hardware.")

The news did not specified what "extra things" were discovered. The news has not been confirmed by government officials.

Personal thought:

This could all be "fake news" with a big tin foil hat. But if this is true, this could be a very big news. That "extra things" could be doing anything spying everyone.

Japanese officials are not, *generally*, known to lie....I will wait to see wider confirmation of course, but this could be a very large story.

Meanwhile, 4 years ago:

Quote

The agency (N.S.A) pried its way into the servers in Huawei’s sealed headquarters in Shenzhen, China’s industrial heart, according to N.S.A. documents provided by the former contractor Edward J. Snowden. It obtained information about the workings of the giant routers and complex digital switches that Huawei boasts connect a third of the world’s population, and monitored communications of the company’s top executives.

I am just baffled by all the things these agencies/companies are doing.

Also 4 days ago:

Quote
Huawei Technologies Co.’s chief financial officer was arrested in Canada over potential violations of U.S. sanctions on Iran, provoking outrage from China and complicating thorny trade negotiations just as they enter a critical juncture.

She is the daughter of Huawei founder.

Huawei is alone vs. the rest of the world. Even Japan and Australia banned their network equipment.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Decent Ray-Tracing hardware that actually does work without tanking performance?

It's pretty easy to makes claims like this and never bother to release any actual credibly evidence. They do the same shit all the time in politics, they might release a photo or something but it's so easy to just Photoshop in fake crap in these days and no one would ever be the wiser.

Indeed. This time it's worse as the "informant" is anonymous and there isn't even a picture given to the news. That's why I've emphasized that this has yet to be confirmed by anyone in the op. God knows what is that "extra thing'. Could be a big pile of dust ?‍♀️

So they make this claim that they "found something", but do not go in details over what exactly it is they found. So for all we know, they just found a spec piece of plastic dust.

This kind of news is basically a conspiracy theorist's wet dream. No substance and all hypothesis.

Great way to make people think Huawei phones have security/privacy compromising features, without explicitly saying it. So they are not legally culpable if it later turns out that the device had no such thing.

My guess is this isn't about their phones but about their network hardware (the stuff your phone connects to). And considering several other countries already took measures against Huawei network hardware there might actually be some fire to this smoke...

Some intelligence agencies say they're dirty, some say they're clean. So either some places get different equipment, some agencies are more competent than others or someone has an agenda.

I don't think any sane intelligence agency would straight come out and say they'll vouch for Huawei; that's just setting yourself up for failure. I think most simply haven't looked into it yet, or they're more worried about upsetting their relations with China.

But we've already seen the UK, Australia & New Zealand (all part of the 5 eyes) taking measures to prevent this hardware from getting into their networks. Now Japan is added to this list.

While I could remotely imagine protectionist / trade-war considerations being a motivation for the US, it's harder to apply that explanation to all these other countries. The most likely agenda is simply to prevent putting a giant trojan horse into your own communication networks.

It's like today there's a news article that claims that there is a large build up of Russian tanks 18km's from the Ukrainian border. There's a photo as well but how hard would it be to just Photoshop in 100 tanks or something into a Google maps image? I don't believe for a second Google isn't in bed with the US government either it's would be pretty easy to get Google to update the images to put in an edited image.

Depends on what you mean by vouch. I don't think any intelligence has any reason to be friendly to Huawei or any other company for that matter. However some intelligence agencies have come out and said the equipment they've looked at was clean and with no reason to suspect foul play.

It's just as likely that the US are pressuring allies to avoid Chinese equipment so they can buy American instead with the added bonus of free surveillance of the very same allies. Something which the US has been caught doing on multiple occasions.

Bear in mind every single one of them is a major US ally with all but the UK fundamentally highly dependent on the USA for it's national Security. Much the same applies to japan. That dosen;t mean everyone's lying but it does mean that there's a genuine interconnect going on between everyone that gives them a good reason to sing the same tune. It's also a genuine reason for anyone to want to spy on them collectively.

Can Gamers Nexus or Linus take a look then? I'd like a source whose head of department can actually use a computer - maybe the extra bits he found in the box were the charger for the phone?

All Huawei equipment sold to the five eyes countries has to be certified for sale by the intelligence agencies and that process involves physical inspection of the equipment, the facilities the equipment is made in and installation into a sand-boxed network for analysis. After that the model of equipment is certified for sale, not all models of equipment is certified for sale. There is a danger that after this something gets altered but you can bet the equipment inspections is an ongoing thing after being certified for sale.

The other issue is that here, and for other countries too, our military network is mostly operated from the USA and we must conform to their standards. That makes it rather difficult to also not ban Huawei if the USA has done so. For some areas, like this, we have no choice but to sing the same tune as it's impossible to do otherwise.

Also Huawei network and server equipment is not banned for sale in New Zealand, it's only not allowed to be used in the 5G network rollout.
