pas008 reacted to leadeater in [rumor] nvidia is reducing shipments on purpose this holiday season to keep the street prices high.
So why would Nvidia care about higher street prices? They get nothing out of it, they sell GPU packages and memory to AIBs at whatever price they set so the street pricing effects them in absolutely no way other than AMD GPU street prices and the performance of those competing products.

    This is a dumb rumor.

seriously with everything going 4k what does it really matter cpu means less until you find games that use more cores
4k benches from many games show all cpus are practically around 10% of each other

The auto makers can hire the right people to run the FABs, thats not an issue. They also have the money and who knows what government handouts they could ask for to get the facilities built. Just because they have a UNION doesnt mean that they cant get reliable knowledge workers. I dont know why everyone things Unions are crap, they are not. I also dont know why the auto makers couldn't run the fabs themselves, as long as you have the right people with the right knowledge anything is possible.

This is going full circle lol. uses a lot of gray energy -> gets scrutinised for harming the environment by using gray energy-> mining farm uses green energy -> gets scrutinised for the impact of generating said green energy. Solution: humans should go extinct to stop energy usage, because no matter what the energy source will be we'll always find a way to question if we're "allowed" to use that energy for something 😛

No, gamers do not have 100+ GPUs, but for every 100 GPU miner in the world there is probably over 1000 gamers each with 1 GPU.

I really don't see how anyone can dispute the fact that gaming worldwide uses about as much power as mining worldwide does.
Are people on this forum just incapable of basic math?

Here is an example with numbers pulled from thin air just to illustrate how math works.
Let's say one gamer uses 100Wh a day for their PC on average.
100 gamers will therefore use 10,000 Wh a day on average.

Let's say one crypto miner uses 5,000 Wh a day for mining on average.
Two crypto miners will therefore use 10,000 Wh a day for mining on average.

Yes, each crypto miner does 4900% more damage to the environment than each gamer, but since gaming is also 4900% more popular, both groups end up doing exactly the same amount of harm to the environment.
It does not matter how much an individual uses. The only thing that matters when looking at the global environmental impact of some activity, is the total power usage which is calculated by taking average power usage and multiplying that with the number of users.

Let's take my previous example of burning oil or gasolin, because that's how a lot of the world's energy is manufactured.
    @Brooksie359

10 people each burning 1 liter of gasolin will result in approximately 23kg of CO2 being released into the atmosphere.
2 people each burning 5 liters of gasolin will result in approximately 23kg of CO2 being released into the atmosphere.

In both cases, 23kg of CO2 was released into the atmosphere.

We should not argue that 10 people each burning 1 liter of gasolin for fun is okay and should just keep doing it, but those 2 people who burned 5 liters each are the problem and need to be stopped.
If you are going to go at this from an environmental standpoint then you should be equally critical of other things that use the same amount of energy. We shouldn't do mental gymnastics about how producing 23kg of CO2 is okay if it's a large group doing it but if it's a small group producing the same 23kg of CO2 then it's suddenly bad. The environment does not give two shits about if the CO2 in the atmosphere was created to make gamers have some fun, or if it was created to let miners make some money. All it cares about is how much CO2 is out there.

Microsoft security team probably isn’t going to overlook Nicehash’s history. Their co-founder’s involvement in creating ransomware and the founding of a group to use ransomware is probably fresh in their minds.

Since many mining developers are anonymous, building backdoors is a bigger concern. Cryptojacking is an ongoing issue, Microsoft has nothing to gain but a lot to lose in allowing the mining apps. From their perspective if you’re sophisticated enough to handle the risk, then you can easily manage the software so there’s nothing to be upset about.

pas008 reacted to seon123 in System76 Launches Open Source Mechanical Keyboard
Who the crap is this thing for? People that just buy anything that System76 sells?

Mainstream people would likely be turned off by the lack of numpad, strange layout (i.e. not full size or TKL), lack of macro buttons and dedicated media keys, non-Cherry switches, and the high price.

People that are into keyboards would be turned off by... the everything. Just some things that came to mind immediately:
North facing switches means that they will interfere with Cherry profile keycaps (tbf, this is not an issue with Box switches, which are the included options) Integrated plate, which means it is stiffer than people generally want, and also prevents any other plate material options. Plate mount stabilisers, which will be more rattly and diffucult to tune than PCB mount stabilisers The layout will make it near impossible to get third party keycaps for that thing. Normal and exploded 75% layouts are fine, but making everything 0.25u narrower for some reason? 1.5u backspace? Where would you get that? According to the specs, it's 948g, which I assume is fully built. That's far lighter than other customs, even those with smaller layouts. It doesn't have any foam or internal dampeners included. According to the product page, the "firmware is based on open source QMK firmware". Which is what pretty much what every custom keyboard uses, so this thing isn't even special in that regard.

pas008 reacted to LAwLz in Intel released their 11th Gen Tiger Lake CPU for gaming, "i5 beats Ryzen 9"
These chips are on Intel's 10nm SuperFin node.
Their 11th desktop parts are on 14nm. Not only are they on 14nm, they are also on a backported architecture originally designed for 10nm.

It's basically 2 generational jumps. That helps a lot. I mean, just look at these numbers:

    Intel 14nm = 37.5 MTr/mm2
    TSMC 7nm = 96.5 MTr/mm2
    Intel 10nn = 100.8 MTr/mm2

Plus it's cherry picked first party benchmarks. So they are probably tweaking things and picking tests that gives them the best results.
