Smach Zero - a $300 portable, handheld Steam Machine

Let's talk about specs and functionality before we jump into.......discussing this product. It has 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 720p touch screen, and an HDMI output. As for the CPU and GPU, well, that's where things get tricky, because it'll be using an "AMD embedded G-Series SoC 'Steppe Eagle' with Jaguar-based CPU and GCN-based Radeon graphics." So basically they're just using a bunch of jargon to say that it won't be that powerful, because let's be honest, at a $300 price point you won't be getting anything stellar. Lastly it will be running SteamOS

r8tk4C12oARz.878x0.Z-Z96KYq.jpg

And now the discussion or rant or whatever you want to call this. It certainly is an interesting product to say the least, although Razer beat them to the punch a few years ago, but that product was too expensive. This is basically a similar thing, but well, cheaper. Now, let's talk specs. First off, what on earth is up with only 32GB of storage? The article didn't state if there would be an expansion card slot, so if it doesn't have one, you can't really do much with this thing...at all. Install a light game or two...that's really it. I'll let the 720p touch screen slide, as it is only a $300 device. And the CPU/GPU....I know it's going to be mobile parts, so they won't be the most powerful things ever, but at that $300 price point, it's just not going to be a fun experience. And speaking of not so fun experiences: SteamOS. SteamOS on desktop is fine and I can deal with it, but on a touch screen device...what. The UI will just be horrible to work with on a touchscreen. I guess you could put it into Big Picture mode, but even then I don't see it as a good experience on this device.

So who is this device for? Certainly not for PC gamers, or at least not the mass majority of them, if you ask me. Is the idea of having mobile Steam Machines cool? Absolutely, but there has to be a decent/better price to performance ratio, and the Smach Zero is all price and no performance, whereas the product Razer made a while ago is all performance and no price. We need a better middle ground than this. Come on OEMs, I have faith!

Well anyways, if you're interested in this product, it will be shipping in Q4 of 2016 with a price tag of $300.

well actually im skeptical

The only reason I used my PSP was emulation for home brew

this device would be like a handheld emulation dream

Too bad it doesn't have 1 analog stick

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I know Steam is trying to bring out their new touch sensitive pad but I feel it would be better to have xbox one/ps4 sized joysticks like in the shield portable. I can't judge though since I never used the touch sensitive pad.

Emulation on SteamOS is actually quite difficult as the OS isn't set up to really handle installing non-steam apps. Getting everything configured was a PITA, and I could only get retroarch working. Never got Dolphin or PCSX2 working until I switched my steambox to Windows 10.

Most people already have one. It's called a smartphone. If you can't stand touch controls, but a cheap Bluetooth control, like a MOGA, which is what I do.

I hate gaming on my phone. I have a controller clip and everything. Just the emulators are not nearly as good as windows ones, and don't come with good control customization in some cases.

In theory you could get emulation to work on SteamOS, because it is Linux based, but imagine trying to set it up on the Smach Zero... Having to deal with command line on a touchscreen and/or touchpad... *Shivers*

It kind of does. I believe the D-Pad are those 4 buttons on the bottom left hand side of the controller.

My friend who works in retail told me that they had an un-announced product in stock (a handheld console specifically). I firmly believe that this is what he meant.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)
