Subscription-based YouTube Ad-Free Is In The Works

Seeing today's WAN show and searching this sub-forum makes it seem that not everyone is aware of this.

As of April 8th (from an email):

"We’re excited to build on this momentum by taking another big step in favor of choice: offering fans an ads-free version of YouTube for a monthly fee. By creating a new paid offering, we’ll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast growing advertising revenue."

An old Time article describes the plan:

"YouTube said Wednesday it will soon launch a new subscription-based service that will let users watch videos on the website without annoying ads interrupting the clips."

Now if only they could convince the morons like HBO, Cinemax, Starz, and the other premium channels to abandon traditional TV all together, and show only on youtube, there would be a point to this.

So you want them to go bankrupt? Youtube pays fuck all compared to what they get from being premium channels and even compared to what they'll be making from their stand-alone subscription services.

For everyone saying how great Adblock is: You do realize that the more people who use Adblock, the more it's guaranteed that YouTube becomes a subscription only service? YouTube remains free because of Ads.

 

Personally, I'd rather not put YouTube behind a paywall. And not everyone uses (or even supports) Patreon. TotalBiscuit, for example, recently stated in a Q&A video that he likely wouldn't use Patreon because it's basically a donation.
