New iPhones Could Bend... On Purpose?

(click for pasta sauce)

I have no idea why I thought this image was so funny, but it was.

So in a bit of interesting news, Apple has filed for a patent for a device that bends on purpose, and it appears pretty flexible according to the images. Quite honestly I can't see too many practical applications of this for an iPhone, but more likely for a device like an iPad. As much as I cringe saying it, imagine folding up your iPad to fit it in a smaller carry case than the standard size of an iPad. I honestly don't think electronics should bend like that... but if it does no harm to the device, why not?

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple Inc. on Thursday, titled “Flexible Electronic Devices,” which describes several instances of an electronic device -- including its display -- that can flex and in some cases fold into different shapes and forms. This would enable users to carry around larger devices, such as an iPad, which could then be folded for storage.

The source talked about other applications too, such as gestures to lock the device. Imagine, rather than moving your thumb up to hit the power button, you squeeze the phone entirely instead. Again, this sounds very weird, and I don't electronics should to it, but we'll see.

To accomplish this, many of the components inside the device would have to be flexible, including displays, touch-sensitive layers, display covers, circuit boards and batteries. In one instance Apple proposes OLED display technology, similar to the Youm technology introduced by Samsung in 2013.

I can't be the only one that thinks a phone shouldn't be flexible like that...

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Anyone concerned about gripping a thing that can bend so easily and so far that the top and bottom can touch each other?

I don't always use Vessel.... but when I do, it's because of Scrapyard Wars.

Every phone can bend, i dont get why people go crazy when apple does this

Because Apple is known for "quality" products that work out of the box.

Something like .1% of iPhone 6+ owners ever even came into an Apple store with an issue of bending; it wasn't a 'gate', it was that Unbox Therapy guy putting ALL of his strength (and he is a big guy) into bending a phone.

Every other phone does it. If you sit directly on a naked phone in your back pocket with your full weight, then that's your own issue.

The HTC One doesn't bend under normal pressure. My Nokia Lumia Icon doesn't bend under normal pressure (then again, it's a Nokia.) The Galaxy S6 doesn't bend. The iPhone 6 and 6+ are particularly fragile compared to other similar phones.

Neither does the iPhone 6. In fact, the HTC One M8 was tested alongside the iPhone 6 and took the same pressure to distort it.

Gotta look up my source, but I saw the s6 bended easier then the apple.

The s3 and s4 I can bend easily in my hand with hardly trying

You forgot to mention the Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge... But you might have folded under the pressure. (jk)

id laugh if apple did this to mess with everyone and get people talking about it.

Some people will never be satisfied until their phones can bend like toffee.

Then again, there is no satisfying the current generation.  Especially focusing on the Hololens, seeing all the complaints is dumbfounding.  If the hololens existed when i was 12 years old, I and all my friends would have lost their collective sh*t.  This generation's response = "meh, looks bad".
