The Crew will not have pre-release reviews, says Ubisoft

IdortMasterRace

The Crew won't have any pre-release reviews, Ubisoft has confirmed.

Ubisoft believes that the open-world racer must be played with thousands of other players to get a true feel for the game.

"The Crew was built from the beginning to be a living playground full of driving fans, so it's only possible to assess our game in its entirety with other real players in the world," reads a Ubisoft statement.

"And by other, we mean thousands and thousands and thousands of players - something that can't be simulated with a handful of devs playing alongside the press.

"For this very reason, The Crew will be available to media to begin their reviews when the game launches on December 2."

Ubisoft said that there will be no embargoes on any coverage when the game is available, before warning that coverage based on previews and beta sessions won't be representative of the final product.

The company was recently criticised for delaying the Assassin's Creed Unity review embargo until after the game had gone on sale in North America.

The news comes ahead of today's open-world beta on consoles. Xbox One and PS4 users will be able to explore the entire map of the USA, with challenges available in two of the game's five regions.

The Crew is an open-world racer in development for PC, Xbox One and PS4. An Xbox 360 edition is in development at Fuel developer Asobo Studio.

It will be released on the delayed date of December 2 worldwide.

Ubisoft recently outlined the game's season pass, which contains monthly car packs and a new game mode.

So in other words, the game is going to be awful, and they don't want people cancelling their pre-orders before release.

"Ubisoft believes that the racer must be played to get a true feel for the game"

What a load of bullshit. I know, how about I pirate it first to get a true feel for the game, Ubisoft? Then when it turns out to be shit, I'll uninstall it and won't proceed to buy it either.

I would gladly give you the torrent for this. Ubisoft just can't stop digging. I'll just wait for Linus' review/opinion about this before even considering buying this game.

probably going to get flamed to hell in here but, it fucking make sense, the crew is an ONLINE MMO racing game, the game was designed to be always online it would be fucking stupid to set up private servers for reviewers, this is one of the biggest issues BF4 had on launch, it had good reviews but it was for nothing because it was played privately it wasn't equal to real world usage, same thing with sim city, and more recently with driveclub on PS4 and we all know what happened next

in my opinion for ONCE in the whole bloody year, ubisoft DID THE RIGHT THING TO DO, if the allowed reviews in private servers it would have been worse for everyone, im all for having post release reviews that having fake reviews because the game wasn't played in the same conditions that normal user would also good luck pirating an MMO btw

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

What you're saying is quite true, but to review the mechanics and playability part of it would be extremely useful to know for people who are interested. I don't think reviews should depend on how much people are playing it, but rather how much fun the player is having. Also, the community can have a negative effect on the review of the game. This can be shown through League of Legends (bad treatment in general), CoD (Known for whole bunch of kids playing). We're also seeing an article of hackers being involved in CS:GO. I think the community can hurt the review more than it can help it.

NIce we all know how this is going to go so rather then just repeat all the bitching we have on what feels like 20 ubisoft threads I'm just going to say I estimate the game will take at least 3 months after release to get to a point we'd class as ready for release.  Anyone else care to venture a guess as to how much more time they needed to finish this one? lol

i understand what you're saying, but with online games the experience is not the same, even if everything is, i mean i know this is hard to explain but remember bf4 on launch, reviews were good about it because everything worked but you got it and you had to dealt with a plethora of bugs, bad connections and shitty servers, which hinders a lot the experience, and those problems affect everything, gunplay that on lan felt good, could be atrocious online, in the case with the crew playing on private could be equal to having amazing races, with responsive cars and systems, but what if online due to bugs and server issues all that goes to shit, driving could feel sluggish, and races be a lag fest with excessive rubberbanding, even though the mechanics are the same, online impacts everything, even in the case of having a feeling for the core mechanics, also this game got public betas, NDA free so if you want to know how it played on that moment you can look those, it might not be the same to retail but is a good place to start

Looks like another nail to the coffin... I actually hope that they go bankrupt since they clearly aren't taking any hints from anyone and keep digging. I feel sorry for the workers there since I doubt they feel accomplished when their games keep getting shamed for being badly done.

There were 2 betas( one on PC and one on Xbone or PS4 if I recall well, I played PC), that could give you a preview.

It was completely open, and people made PReviews of the game.

At online games, it is correct that the community can give a negative review... but then again if you go there and play the game, you will meet the community.

I think ubisoft is right. an MMO must be tested as an MMO should. WoW would be pretty different if you would play alone with questing, with several players for few dungeons and maybe 1 raid

EDIT:

For the pre order part :

Good. You should not buy the hype for loads of money, rather a real thing that is out there.

I learnt not to pre order after Titanfall. Played the beta, was fun, played the game, but  after just 15 hours of playing with all 5 guns, 5 maps... it became empty.

I played the beta with this game and I was fairly surprised , as for what it is, an arcade MMO racer, where you can discover USA, it is awesome.

IT had an awesome feeling driving through USA, the game is massive

Played the beta and found the game boring. Plus i wouldn't trust a game which had a 30fps lock. The game also had poor driving, actually worse than watch_dogs

That does make sense, but then I still feel the review should focus on the core aspects of the game disregarding the servers. There are alot of other factors that the playable aspect of the game can change too. Things like under what specifications, what internet speeds and whatnot, but including those in the review I feel would be irrelevant and unnecessary, since everyone will have their own experience with their own setup. You could even have problems in any of those factors, where your specs are too low, your internet speed is slow (not targeted to BF4, since this was net code I believe and this was the same problem in BF3 I think, so there isn't much surprise there). There are even cases where MMOs don't work on launch because of server problems (too much people getting on or just bad servers). In a scenario where the environment isn't really controlled, anything can happen, and I don't think reviews should look at the game under a specific environment. Otherwise, we get reviews under circumstances where the factors destroy the experience and other reviews where the factors are no longer harming the experience.

I think reviews should be done before the game is launched, rather than when the game is either having problems moments at launch or perfect during launch or fixed after launch. If it was the other cases, I think it would be more of a recommendation like "Now is a great time to play this game", rather than "This is a fun game."

I think pre-ordering is overrated. Though I did do it to Dragon Age Inquisition (because I love the series and haven't been too let down by them). That comment isn't really directed to Ubisoft or The Crew, I just can't really pre-order anything that has had some issues in the past, anything that hasn't shown much change, or anything that is of a new IP. It just so happens, Ubisoft just happens to have a lot of titles that contain most of these points, though they're not the only ones.

To clarify, I'm not surprised Ubisoft it's doing this cause it's probably another shitty broken game. I'm surprising they're basically quiet about it and sacrificing getting some good publicity with previews an such (come on just buy some Doritos and Mountain Dew for a few "game journalists" they'll give you a decent note) I mean really, who the fuck is anticipating this game? Who even knows it's coming or when? This is surprisingly underwhelming: remember that you can sell a very average and non-spectacular game like Titanfall if you market it enough.

Easy: wait for Total Buiscits review. If he does mention that his video might be biosed in some way then wait for Linus and Luke to give their view on the game once they played it (might wait week or two for that though)

The crew has had like 3 massive beta's on pc, and a further 2 on consoles I believe? So there is tons of information around about this particular game, and Ubisoft seem to be testing this one as much as possible, and had been giving out beta keys left and right.

Check out Slaptrain and MrAeroHD on youtube for play throughs of the crew betas.
