Google forces European Android OEMS to pay licensing fee for Google Apps | Play Store

Source 1: AluminiumTech https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/983785-google-forces-european-android-oems-to-pay-licensing-fee-for-google-apps-play-store-youtube-and-more-cost/

Source 2: https://www.theverge.com/2018/10/16/17984074/google-eu-android-licensing-bundle-chrome-search

  • Google is changing the way it licenses its suite of Android apps in Europe, leading the company to charge a licensing fee for the Play Store and other Google apps for the first time.

  • The changes come in response to a July ruling by the European Commission, which fined the company $5 billion for antitrust violations and ordered it to stop “illegally tying” Chrome and search apps to Android.

    • Google was bundling its search engine and Chrome apps into the operating system.

    • Google has also blocked phone makers from creating devices that run forked versions of Android,

    • and it “made payments to certain large manufacturers and mobile network operators” to exclusively bundle the Google search app on handsets.

  • Before, Google didn’t charge for Android and its apps because of the revenue brought in through Chrome and search.

    • “Since the pre-installation of Google Search and Chrome together with our other apps helped us fund the development and free distribution of Android, we will introduce a new paid licensing agreement for smartphones and tablets shipped into the [European Economic Area],”

  • Now (in Europe):

    • Android is free.

    • The Play Store and many of Google’s other apps, like Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube, will be bundled together under a paid licensing agreement.

    • Chrome + Google Search app bundle can be added on top of that agreement for free but it isn’t required.

  • It is not yet clear how much the fees will be.

  • ALSO- in the past, Google required that companies building phones or tablets that included the Play Store only build phones and tablets that included the Play Store — they couldn’t make other devices with a forked version of Android. Now, that’ll be allowed in Europe

    • Is the market big enough to make that worthwhile?

  • These changes take effect Oct 29

  • Google is appealing the European Commission’s ruling

Samsung mobile design roadmap

  • Yesterday, Samsung Display invited about 20 customers to hold the "2018 Samsung OLED Forum" at the Shenzhen Marriott Hotel in China.

  • Samsung revealed a roadmap focused on burying components under the screen:

    • Fingerprint under screen (FoD)

    • under-screen sensor (including camera) technology. (under panel sensor, UPS)

    • vibrations that emanate from screen (haptics on display, HoD)

    • screen sound technology (sound on display, SoD)

  • If and when these all roll out, the device would completely bezeless and maximally waterproof.

  • Will any of these (other than FoD) make it into the S10?

  • Discord has revoked your right to sue and to congregate as a class action lawsuit

    • you must go through an arbitrator (ie outside of the courts)

  • Without the ability to congregate for a class action lawsuit, if Discord ever leaks your data or does something bad to a large number of users, you have no way to sue together rather than individually suing via the arbitrator.

    • You’re likely to have less of an impact on a company as an individual rather than a collective.

  • there is an opt-out for the clause but you must do so within 30 days

  • This is a fairly common clause for online selling platforms, and came along at the same time as the public launch of the Discord game store. Steam announced something similar all the way back in 2012 - Jake

  • These terms are enforceable in the US but not in Europe (thanks GDPR)

  • Dioscord’s side:

    • (quoting techdirt) “our class action lawsuit system is broken.. in practice it has morphed into a system where a bunch of bottom-feeder lawyers sue just about any company at every opportunity... and then those lawyers end up taking the bulk of the money."

    • “If they changed the barrier for class action lawsuits and made it less about enriching lawyers looking for money and more about fixing things, we wouldn’t be here”

    • “If you want to opt-out, you absolutely should”

Kinda wish they'd either make the videos longer or stay focused on the topics more.

I ask this like every week but nobody responds. Have the Twitch email reminders stopped? I haven't gotten them in awhile and I don't know if I'm doing something wrong.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!

Truth be told, IP68 next to IP69K is really the farthest one should ever need in a daily life use and that is a oops I forgot my phone in the washer and put the washer on a heavy load wash with 2 socks and a phone in it... Tho I should mention if you have a front load washer with that much laundry in it, IP rating is the least of your concerns, it's the broken screen that will likely follow ?

Headphone jacks don't prevent IP ratings since they themselves are self enclosed units, if they get removed it is the manufacture trying to make the phone "cleaner" more than functional...

Apparently no one in the YouTube community knows not to cross the streams...

L-man

It is a step up from getting the "L-man" as you call him, to quote a post of yours or anyones, in any of the other threads and comment on it. However I do agree, I bet deep down everyone who posts or makes it a goal to post in Tech News or posts many posts in Tech News, those people want Linus to bring their news worthy tech news, to the WAN show. It is a guaranteed winner of a bet. Aside from that, there is not much else to add.

I think this one is my third, but I really dont try, as my previous post states.

What are you saying precisely? That Linus didnt grace his lips with your username on the WAN show? Now that is an interesting aspect of my almost always right theories. Perhaps that is the 3rd and final step of the ultimate Linus Tech Tips Master Race, club. Getting L-man to grace your username with his lips and vocal chords. It is a three level club. At the entrance, it is a very huge gymnasium offering up american beers by the truck loads and radio waves for music where the maximum occupancy capacity is unlimited.

Yup, I was kind of hoping to hear that, but no harm done, at least it's in the document. Maybe next week?

I enjoy the WAN a lot, it has great humor and personality.  But there is always so many missed stories. The smart mirrors and Apple v Australia Encryption stuff would have been great talking points. I really think you need a 3rd person for chat watch and to make the show longer. There was too much time spent being distracted by the chat this ep.
