I guess there are two parts to the problem that make it not a consideration for most people. As you mentioned the cost of such a system is going to be expensive, so to gain value from it, it will take scaling. In a similar way I hadn't gone solar at home as my roof area is on the small side. I wouldn't generate that much, pushing the break even time out. Also, these systems are not exactly portable, so you're going to have to know you will stay in the same house for a long time to gain the value from it. I can't say that with certainty for my current house.

The other issues comes in when you dont need the heat the efficiency tanks... So in nordic countries its great, in the UK not as much so.

Slightly off the topic but was just having a Google of the UK power supply and found this;

I'd say if you've told them and they're fine with it then you're good to go. If they get an unexpectedly high bill at the end of the month then you can always dial it back and offer to pay them back for a little while.

 

In the grand scheme of things if it costs them a tenner but they can see you're doing it for a good reason and learning new things at the same time then it's money well spent for them

I haven't calculated out the bill, but going from non-folding to folding on half my Xeon cores on one machine adds just over 200w to the active draw coming through my UPS for that machine.  Doing the same number of threads on my high core laptop is only about a 15w difference from normal.  So, I don't think there's an easy "this will take this much power" kind of reference unless you have literally the exact same hardware.

I'm probably pulling close to like 800W from one outlet..... Oops lol. Two 1080 Tis, a 1080, and a 750 Ti (another 1080 soon to replace the 750 Ti). Add in the CPUs and allthe extra stuff, and it's definitely up there.

Everyone's equipment will be slightly different but in the example above I can see he's running the same CPU as me and a 1060 as opposed to my 1070 so we're going to be similar and enough to give him a rough idea. My overclock on the cpu is a little higher so I will probably use a little more but I think it's good enough for a rough guide.

I've been measuring power at the wall. 103KW/h for the last 13.5 days. The only thing I've had going for me is it's been 2 weeks of nice sunny days, so hopefully the solar is providing most of that.

I'm pulling 1450watts from one socket.... Three systems, two monitors, speakers and audio kit with a network switch and other bits and bobs.

I'd say that the 2080ti is somewhat better priced than RX580's were in June 2017-... What, May 2018? Sure $1300 is a lot, possibly double what it should be worth but I mean RX580's were 4x their MSRP

I really hope they flesh that part out. At over 2mil PPD on a single 2080Ti, it's a really good card for folding if you can get some sort of a deal for it.

I wonder if at that point it needs a full 16x lane or not. Cause isn't it a 1080 that starts to reach an 8x slot max throughput? Or am I making that up.

Meh, something is borked on my main rig. FAH Control won't pause folding, have to kill the processes and all games have started crashing, might go for a windows re-install =E

Once the Folding Month is over give your CPU and GPU a break and try this. I discovered while playing with a 1060 6GB that at the absolute lowest power limit the 1060 is the most efficient in terms of PPD/W.

 

In essence, a 40% decrease in Power Limit from 130W to 60W typically results in only a 15% decrease in PPD. So if you want to keep folding but want to do so in a more power friendly fashion you can crank your Power Limit down. You will still have the overhead from the main board and power supply losses to deal with but these should also be reduced slightly.

 

This all stems from the efficiency curve on Pascal being non linear. To get better performance you have to add increasingly larger amounts of power.

 

Here in Ontario we have residential time of use rates with the electricity being least expensive from 8pm to 8am, slightly more expensive early in the morning and evening and most expensive during the day.

 

These can be offset by using Windows task scheduler to reconfigure the GPU to use lower power limits during the day and higher at night.

Both my 1060 6GB draw an average of 127W so I’d expect the 3 GB version with fewer CUDA cores to be 115-120W. Though the power limit on my cards can be set to 140W in practice they max out between 125 and 130 using synthetic benchmarks and though at this point you could push them further, further increases in the Graphics Clock offset at this point lead to instability.
