Well one slot finally finished but the other one is at 88.22% after 1/2 an hour (wasnt related to Internet going down).

Have to have a talk with my ISP about my guaranteed 25Mbps Down.

Day Eighteen - Folding Month 2018

Guys... Winter The update is coming.

In first we have Tomerrs with 128million points, The KIng is not far behind him with 119.4million, then we have _Rlocke with 105million points, Jakkuh is holding onto that number 4 with 80.6million, Gorgon has the 5th spot with 51.6million. Dissitesuxba11s is in 6th with 44.4million, Porina is in 7th with with 42.4million, Ben Quigley is sitting in 8th with 42.2million, Palespartan in 9th with with 34.8milion, and Cereal5 is still the gate keeper to the top 10 with 34million points.

DUW1G1T and Yabdat take 11 and 12 with 31million points each. InvaderZim is in 13th with 24.7million points. 14th is held by TVwazhere with 23.6million points, D_Newb has 20.7million, Sazrocks in 16th with 19million, Powelljl, Willhemmins and RollinLower all have 18million points taking the next three spots and finally in 20th we have Stijnman with 17.2million points.

It seems @King Poet is looking to challenge Tomerrs for the number one spot, @palespartan seems to be stalling and Cereal5 is looking like he may be able to push up a rank. Unfortunately there isn't really much more excitement going on for the moment.

The overall team has seen slight drop to 264million points of production over the last 24hours.

Please remember we have minimum participation requirements, these are 100k points, 15WUs, and 15 days of having activity over the course of the whole month.

Also, I just want to add that if we suspect you are purposefully just skimming the minimum requirements you may be disqualified. If we see you produce one WU per day for the last 15days for instance we may feel the need to investigate.

Thanks for everyone who is involved in this event,

Happy folding,

Ben.

My parents are catching on to how often I leave my PC on and honestly I'm kind of concerned of how much of a fat electricity bill increase I'll see from this month of folding.

Weekdays at work are where I'll prioritise folding, with weekends being my time for gaming, or at least a single work unit being completed across the weekend.

If it's any help, I'm running a gaming rig, media server and Surface Pro (plugged into the mains constantly) at full whack and the tracking on my smart meter shows that my electric bill has gone up by about £4 a week. I'd think if you're running a single high-spec PC even at full power 24/7 it would probably only add about £2.50 a week to your bill. Maybe speak to them and explain that it's for a good cause and not going to cost them more than about £10 a month. Obviously if they're paying the bill and don't approve then best to go with their decision and not do it sneakily behind their backs but they might be fine with it

Electricity costs can be worked out. With very vague assumptions, I'd guess the system in @seoz sig with a 1060 3GB is using 150W continuously while folding but otherwise idle. This is based on nominal 120W TDP for the GPU, that folding doesn't max it out, and the rest of the system takes a bit too. This would come to 3.6 kWh/day, which at my current electricity rates (12p/unit) would be 43p a day. I need to change supplier soon, as my current one is going up to 18p/unit once my current fixed rate expires. That's gonna suck and I need to find a better deal.

Also consider that the energy used gets turned into heat. If there is temperature controlled heating used, that would have to do a little less work, so offsets it a bit.

Gaming system: R7 7800X3D, Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming Wifi, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB, Corsair Vengeance 2x 32GB 6000C30, RTX 4070, MSI MPG A850G, Fractal Design North, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Productivity system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, 64GB ram (mixed), RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, random 1080p + 720p displays.

My bill has gone up by around £10 a week, but we haven't had the heating on once as I've been heating the rooms we use with the system pretty much exclusively. Our hot water but not our central heating is electric so we see an increase in electric costs anyway as the ground water gets cooler during the winter.

That's interesting, I hadn't thought about it like that, I normally just keep an eye on the meter telling me my total usage. Using HWMonitor I can see that my cpu is using about an average of 80w while folding, my 1070 has a TDP of 150w so again probably using about 120w so now know the rig is probably pulling a little over 230w once everything else is added into the equation. It's not a bad source of heat but my heating is gas and that costs peanuts in comparison to electric. Reminded me that I need to check out my tariff as the current rate runs out in January, currently 12.75p/kwh but no idea what it goes up to when they switch it over to the standard rate if I don't select a new tariff

My bill has gone up by around £10 a week, but we haven't had the heating on once as I've been heating the rooms we use with the system pretty much exclusively. Our hot water but not our central heating is electric so we see an increase in electric costs anyway as the ground water gets cooler during the winter.

You don't have the problem so bad you need to open windows and dump heat? My house gets pretty warm during the day and cools down again overnight, but I have to consider my pets also.

I noticed that when my gas system died and I decided not to replace it, switching to electric only. I had kinda wondered if someone could come up with a home scale gas fueled generator that could undercut mains electricity.

Not really, we have 4 bedrooms over 3 floors and theres only two of who who live here now. The cats love it and I cant keep them out of the room with my two more powerful systems. Then I have one in the living room and it keeps it around comfortable temps. The room with both system in is warm, like 22-24C but its not too bad.

Gas fuelled generator is an interesting idea, I'm sure it can be done but makes me think why hasn't it been done already? I guess the average home user isn't going to want to fiddle around with their mains electric to switch it over from the grid to the generator. guess also the amount of gas required might then negate it's cost benefit

helped a mate build a waste oil heater for his workshop before but he's a mechanic and has a good supply of waste oil, it worked but wasn't the most successful and you did end up smelling when being near it haha.

In home co-generation is a thing, Heat and power, But they are often expensive as you need something high efficiency, such as a gas or steam turbine system. I think adding these to tesla powerwall type devices could help though. My friend has a DIY powerwall that buys at night and uses during the day, this along with his solar panels has made him basically have no power bill. He's got a tariff that means he can sell in the day for almost the same price he buys at night.

Electricity is so expensive because despite have stupid high efficient generation the transmission isn't so great, so, if you can get high efficiency in home generation it would be cheaper to produce onsite. The issue is, the efficiency comes mostly from the size of the plant. Add to that the fact that if it breaks down you are fucked, and the huge cost to install such a device it doesnt make sense in the end for most people.

My biggest problem would be that I live in a rented flat, I have a small garden area but not sure the other tenants would like me plonking a generator there. Don't think the landlord would be that impressed if I re-jiggled all the electrics then took it away with me when I left either :D

Wonder if there would be a way to build small-ish scale ones on new developments, could have it backed up to the national grid so no loss during downtime but then a whole street could benefit from the lower cost.

I guess the push to renewables would go against this although I believe currently the UK is about 40% is gas powered anyway. I guess maybe have communities powered by their own small scale solar/wind etc but then have the cheap gas power generator for times when you need more juice. They could then have a service charge that covers the cost of running their own grid without having to subsidise the whole of the power network.Presume a gas generator can be fired up and start producing power pretty quickly without to much of a lead time to act as the backup

Well yeah, if you read up you'd see I already talked about this, in home co-generation is a thing, CHP(combined heat and power) units can be bought and installed and are actually rather quiet and efficient. You can even get some that run on biomass so you can use carbon neutral fuel.
