Go to solution Solved by palespartan,

I figured I would take advantage of the fact this post hasn't been locked yet to spread the word about this years folding month.

And how much does RDIMM cost ?

Also cheap, DDR3 RDIMM is a total flood on ebay as well.

I like the Xeons and I would gladly buy SuperMicro motherboards FOREVER but buying Mobos and LGA1366 CPUs and cooling off eBay is a bit too specialized for the casual user.

You can actually use the Xeons in standard X58 motherboards, the i7's of that generation are just over priced is all. As you know you're just after the PCIe lanes so you can even just use UDIMMs, Xeons don't require RDIMMs.

Ah yes there's the real reason why I will likely never use an X58 system, as much as I'd want to. Too much technical shit. I'd rather just run a 44 lane chip on X79 or X99 and hook up my 5 GPUs

My Build, v2.1 --- CPU: i7-8700K @ 5.2GHz/1.288v || MoBo: Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E Gaming || RAM: 4x4GB G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 2666 14-14-14-33 || Cooler: Custom Loop || GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC Black, on water || PSU: EVGA G2 850W || Case: Corsair 450D || SSD: 850 Evo 250GB, Intel 660p 2TB || Storage: WD Blue 2TB || G502 & Glorious PCGR Fully Custom 80% Keyboard || MX34VQ, PG278Q, PB278Q

Audio --- Headphones: Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX || Amp: Schiit Audio Magni 3 || DAC: Schiit Audio Modi 3 || Mic: Blue Yeti

[Under Construction]

My Truck --- 2002 F-350 7.3 Powerstroke || 6-speed

My Car --- 2006 Mustang GT || 5-speed || BBK LTs, O/R X, MBRP Cat-back || BBK Lowering Springs, LCAs || 2007 GT500 wheels w/ 245s/285s

The Experiment --- CPU: i5-3570K @ 4.0 GHz || MoBo: Asus P8Z77-V LK || RAM: 16GB Corsair 1600 4x4 || Cooler: CM Hyper 212 Evo || GPUs: Asus GTX 750 Ti, || PSU: Corsair TX750M Gold || Case: Thermaltake Core G21 TG || SSD: 840 Pro 128GB || HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB

R.I.P. Asus X99-A motherboard, April 2016 - October 2018, may you rest in peace. 5820K, if I ever buy you a new board, it'll be a good one.

Well X58 is no different to those, it's just silly to buy something that old unless you know what or why you're doing it. The old i7 960's were great, my old gaming desktop was that and I still have it around. It just not common knowledge that you can just drop in any Xeon of the same socket in to X58/X79/X99 as they all can ?.

The HEDT CPUs of each generation hold a higher value, the tidal wave of old Xeons from decommissioned servers and unsold stock means you can get great deals.

What the crap @Invaderzim117 ?

5 hours ago, Ben Quigley said:

also @Gorgon of the 20 left over 4 are semi-reserved for NVMe devices leaving you with 16 general purpose lanes. This means if you have a PCIe wifi card and two GPUs but no NVMe devices your GPUs are still limited to 8x per GPU. If you have three GPUs its cut down to 8x for slot one and 4x for the other two.

This is good to know because ITNOS is running on a PCI-e wifi card, and the 750ti should arrive tomorrow meaning dual GPU folding on that system

Question I had randomly pop in my head last night. For multi gpu setups on the same CPU.... Do the GPU'S work together on the same Wu, or do they each get assigned their own WU? I don't think it matters in the long run but I was just curious

So far so good, at the moment it looks like my pc is working normally. No weird usb mouse problems with my steelseries mouse, looks like my old logitech g400 mouse was the problem.

I am no expert on fahcores but it looks like Core A7 types of WUs don't fold. So there is probably something wrong in your virtual machine as A7 core fails to start. To fix this you probably need direct access to your virtual machine.

Install FAH on another system but don’t define any slots to fold then you can use the advanced control to connect remotely to the client on the unRAID system.

It's an app in unRAID not a VM so not sure this could be applied, Here's a screen shot of the docker:

It's an app in unRAID not a VM so not sure this could be applied, Here's a screen shot of the docker:

36330 is the port for the control and 7366 for the web so you should be able to connect.  It says it’s in bridge mode so can I assume it uses the main systems IP.  If so you should be able to use the web control using a browser to <ip>:7366 or the advanced control to just the IP

Also cheap, DDR3 RDIMM is a total flood on ebay as well.

For sure. I have a ton of the stuff left over from a server that decided to go unstable with 64GB installed, so it is running 32GB.

You can actually use the Xeons in standard X58 motherboards, the i7's of that generation are just over priced is all. As you know you're just after the PCIe lanes so you can even just use UDIMMs, Xeons don't require RDIMMs.

I had thought several times before of getting the Chinese X79 boards which are reported to work with registered ECC. Combined with a cheap Xeon and the previously mentioned ECC ram as a possible GPU host setup. If you get the ATX boards they appear to have 3 physical 16x PCIe slots but no idea how they're wired. Would be impractical to fit the 3rd card though unless you use a riser.

Never did buy one, got enough systems I don't use all the time.

I won't give away my secret weapon but hopefully I won't have to use it long

... I also hope I can finally start playing video games again once my 24hr average gets back to normal..
