What to do with old hardware when you upgrade?

I generally like to pimp it onto my friends who either have inferior parts or are thinking of building a computer. I am about to sell my case, old motherboard, h100i, and 670 to a friend who is building soon.

I took the fan off my i5-2500k's stock heatsink and use the heatsink as a coaster. I also keep my 2 GTX 560 Ti's in my closet back home, just in case my current GPU dies for some reason, a friend needs one or I've sold my current one and need something to hold me over until the new GPU arrives.

I just straight up build another computer to just screw around with. Or if it is hardware that is still relevant (upgrading 4770k to 4790k for some reason or similar) then sell it to a friend or something.

I am building my First Computer in a couple of weeks, and I'll be buying a used Graphics Card and then in August I'll buy a GTX 970 or similar, so I'm seeing what to do on this thread when the time comes :-)

I was wondering what usage there is for it.
is there even any value left in this hardware? or do i just sell it as scrap metal and earn a few bucks?

Donate it to a charity that works with kids - they may actually like it.

 

Try to sell it on ebay, you never know what hole-in-the-wall government agency is looking to replace that exact same piece of hardware because they are deathly afraid of trying out a different component and not knowing how to make it work.

 

Gold reclamation - not terribly difficult, but can be very dangerous for the DIYer.

 

Otherwise you might be able to use a good case, but it it's that old it may not even be compatible with the newer mobo layouts, let alone even desirable - e-Cycle it .

 

Edit: Oh! and you could go "Office Space" on it   Just don't mess with the red stapler - that will come back to bite you in the a$$  :lol:.

I would either run pfSense on it and have your own badass router, or donate it to a charity. A pfSense router with this hardware should be able to handle a reasonable amount of throughput.

CPUs in sockets you cut out of the motherboard make pretty cool coasters, a lot of RAM has holes in either end and can be a pretty cool looking key fob. You might be able to get some capacitors out of the PSU if you'd have any use for those, and the GPU could be a good paper weight

so after a bit of fiddling around I managed to get my 3 monitors in a surround resolution of 4320 by 900 (which is about 1/6th more pixels than 1440p).

I have a i3 4170 and a 660 ti

to my surprise it got 100fps in cs go max settings and 40-45 fps max settings jc2

old / low end hardware is still kicking strong
