What to do with old hardware when you upgrade?

rainbrodash666

I have lost MANY items in the last 25+ years of computers, but the one i miss most is my Alienware Area 51 desktop from 1999 with a killer Pentium 3 550Mhz CPU :o , 22GB HDD, 250MB iomega zip drive and a 3.5 inch floppy drive. It went back to the mothership in 2010  :(

Current Rig as of 7/30/13

A10-6800k, Asrock Extreme 6, 16GB Kingston Hyper X 2133Mhz RAM, Asus 2GB 7770, OCZ vertex 4 128GB SSD, 2TB Barracuda HDD, Rosewill Hive 750 watt supply, and CM Storm Trooper case.

Ah those good old daughter boards. I was shocked to see them come back with the popularity of the M-itx boards.

I have a Q6600 that's still running. It's been nearly 6 years. Still a champ.

It will need a proper send-off once it finally dies :(

Most people have abandoned their Core 2 Duo's and Quad's by now, but my QX9650 is still truckin' along at 4.9GHz and my GTX 465 is actually the bottleneck in every game. I don't see myself upgrading for another 2-3 years.

I have a 250 GT series video card in my computer that still works. Quite surprising actually. It's not entirely compatable with the new drivers though, so I get BSODs sometimes. Gonna have to replace it soon.

An example is that you upgrade from a core i5 to an i7.  What do you do with the i5?

^this is an example.  It didn't actually happen

You don't want to open the drawers under my bed....

I would sell the i5 or build a second rig - maybe a LAN rig if your into that. A CPU of some value is not worth keeping IMO. Keep the old pentium who cares no one is going to buy, but a still relevant i5 thats maybe a few months - there is a buyer somewhere.

Make a keychain, build a HTPC or DVR, frame it and put it on the wall in honor of the years of service... stuff.
