Wow, that's a clear sign of a problem. The solution is, gather all the aluminum parts as best you can and recycle them! You'll get some good hard cold cash for it! Then find the local electronics disposal place and dump the rest there, remember those heat sinks are mainly aluminum and copper (also recyclable). One mans junk is an others gold.

and another person I know bought a brand new gtx 460 three days ago, I am so confused.

Just because someone buys a product, it doesn't mean that it was a good choice. Unless he manged to find a good deal on the card (ie; very low price), the price/performance of the card would probably too high to be worth it (especially since old hardware typically goes up in price, due to limited stock).

Depends on what his goals are... I'd imagine for many out there it's just the lack of knowledge on the differences of old vs new. I see people up selling old junk on craigslist all the time.

I've bought old hardware though in comparison to newer options but because of the price/performance difference. Sometimes the older option is the better option. And sometimes it's fun to buy old hardware and reminisce about the good ol' days. Also, for older games the 4870 is still a very solid card, even compared to a 7770.

460s can be had for cheap, overclock like crazy, and can perform very well for the price. The only downside to them these days (in SLI configurations anyways) really is the 1GB buffer.

Sometimes it's justifiable, like if it's really cheap and you don't have a lot of money. You need to know though that the 4870 was the 7970 of it's time, x870 used to be top end, then with the 6000 series x870 was mid-top end and x970 became top end.

Still though, he probably should have bought a 7850 or something.

I know that the x8xx series used to be top end single gpu, same for the 3 & 5 series too, I ran 4850 crossfire for a while. and I just found out that my frien didn't buy the 460 it was given to him by his boss at bestbuy. so thats kinda cool, the reason is they are in the same guild on lol and his gpu went out.

just sounds like people buying stuff when not really understanding what they need and/or whats a good deal. just take a look at craigslist computer section. it blows my mind the prices ppl ask for old pc's and pc parts.

When I lived at home I kept all my old stuff, passed the usable PC stuff to my dad, but in the house we have most of my original Commodore 64, 128, Apple IIgs, Mac Classic, Mac Quadra 660AV, I think my dad even has his original Zeos branded PC he paid an arm and leg for. Not sure how much of the stuff works, but we never sold or threw it away.

Believe we still have the Atari 2600 and 5200 floating around somewhere.

Since I moved out, I don't have any space to save stuff, I try tho.
