Looks like it’s closer to being “Pro” now. Now to see if they’ve fixed the keyboards getting stuck over small specks of lint

The reason I used the Precision over the XPS (I didn't use the Xeon config, the CPU is the same chip in both) is because the target market for both computers is working professionals and prosumers needing portability and power. I don't know where you're seeing a comparison to the Xeon. For one thing, the i9 is pricier, for another, the Xeon is only mentioned in that my own laptop has that configuration; however, it's not the comparison model.

The compared models have the exact same CPU, the same RAM, the same size HD, and comparable pro-grade GPUs (the MBP's got a "Radeon Pro" GPU to compete with the Quadro). Hence, applicable comparison.

Furthermore, AMD advertises the Radeon Pro in the MBP as a Workstation card, supported by their Workstation drivers: https://www.amd.com/en/graphics/workstations-radeon-pro-500

Yes, the XPS is cheaper. It is not a mobile workstation nor is it advertised as such. MBP and Precision both are.

So the XPS is not a mobile workstation because it doesn't have a "pro" graphics card (even though GTX 1050ti ~= P2000/Pro 560X)? That's about the only difference I can see (other than it being considerably cheaper). I've worked in IT for 6 years and I don't think I've ever heard of anyone care if their graphics card is a certified professional card except for the CADD department.

Ayyy, Apple isnt passing off a dual core in a Macbook PRO anymore

Edit: Gave them too much credit, they still sell the dual-core in the non-touchbar 13inch model.

Didn't even know that anyone was still making duel cores.

Duel cores, no. Dual cores, yes :P

Btw, the dual core models aren't 8th gen. Those are the original 13" non-TB models that existed before this refresh. The 8th gen chips are only for the TB models at this moment. They're just Kaby Lake dual cores.

Up until Intel decided that a 15W quad core was possible all of these ULV processors were dual core.

I would hardly call it a "Pro" GPU, since we have FirePro GPUs. The site you link to says nothing about it being a workstation card, it just says that it has support for async compute, like any normal Polaris card and that it has a updated shader engines and enhanced momory compression, but that is also normal Polaris stuff. OpenCL and Metal support is also normal Polaris.

I would at most say that they make the cards look semi pro, at least to the consumers that know that FirePro cards are a thing.

When you look under their Pro drivers nothing for a radeon pro 500 shows up.

Spoiler

So please show me where you are getting this pro driver from.

Also I wouldn't call a MBP for a workstation, it is tbh a joke to call it a workstation. They thermal throttle like crazy, so the whole point of a workstation is kinda lost. I also only see one thing that they are good at and that is video editing, so I guess that you can call it a workstation for video editing, even though they thermal throttle heavy with that too

Holy shit. I just went onto Apple's site for fun to check the local price with VAT. 13" starts at $2500 and 15" at $3350. No can do.

I remember some years ago that the 13" could be had for like $1400-1500 for the base model (and yes, that's with VAT). Back then it was actually a bargain for what you got. The 28W processors with Iris graphics were much better than the 15W non-Iris that all Windows models had (and still is better of course) but the machines were roughly the same price so the MBP was actually a very good buy.

Its pretty shitty compared to the competition.

It performs around a 1050 (overall slightly worse given the lower efficiency), which is realistically it's competition. So not exactly.

From what I can see the 560x should perform almost exactly the same as Vega 11

The 560x has the same number of cores and is just clocked slower. Same as the "mobile" 1050.

GTA 5 benchmarks had the 1050 20fps higher on average than the 560x.

Mobile 1050 isn’t clocked slower though, the mobile 560 is.
