AMD renames FreeSync 2 and changes requirements | FreeSync 2 HDR monitors now basically require DCI P3 Wide Color Gamut & HDR600 support

AMD is renaming FreeSync 2 to FreeSync 2 HDR and is changing the requirements that monitors must meet in order to be FreeSync 2 HDR certified.

 

This was discovered during an interview between PCPerspective and AMD.

 

Low Framerate Compensation is staying the way it was. 

 

However, the HDR specification required is now HDR600 with 99% BT.709 coverage and 90% of DCI P3 Wide Color Gamut spectrum. Which is a huge leap forward from HDR400  which was required for FreeSync 2 originally and wasn't true HDR.

The guys over at PC Perspective conducted an interesting interview with AMD, during which a company representative talked about impending changes to AMD's FreeSync program. Essentially, the company found that there is some consumer confusion regarding what features exactly FreeSync 2 delivers over its first-gen counterpart. As such, they feel renaming the technology to FreeSync 2 HDR conveys the focus on the new feature-set: LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) and the FreeSync 2 HDR fast-lane for tone-mapping improvements. 

The AMD representative further clarified what specs are required for a monitor to receive FreeSync 2 HDR certification: support for at least HDR600, coverage of 99 percent of BT.709 and 90 percent of the DCI P3 color spectrum. Also mentioned was a minimum response time, though the exact value remains unknown. An interesting point that can be gleaned from AMD's change, though, is that this one is more than just cosmetic: AMD's first FreeSync 2 certification program required displays to only be able to adhere to HDR400

I'm glad AMD has upped the requirements and changed the naming as some were confused by it. Hopefully OEMs will start making FreeSync 2 HDR monitors.

FreeSync 2 was an improvement over the original FreeSync in more than just HDR.

 

It added Low Framerate Compensation which enables FreeSync at a range of framerates between the minimum and maximum supported by the monitor.

 

E.g. If you were getting between 30 and 144 fps you would still get the benefits of freesync running at that framerate of the monitor supported that range. 

 

HDR on FreeSync 2 was enabled by making adjustments to latencies and other things to get FreeSync working at the same time as HDR.

nice. im currently waiting for vega to drop to below msrp to snag one at some point. im not shure it is worth spending 300$ upgrading from a 1050ti

Yeah, I was coming from an R9 380, so its only about 54% better stock, but hey, it was a gift. 

 

A Vega 56 is 172% better than a 1050Ti and a Vega 64 is 197% better. So worth it imo.

Well it looks like their won't be Freesync 2 HDR versions of the current insanely price 4k 144hz Acer and Asus monitors then, they have low DCI P3 coverage iirc  (70% ish?)  :D

Other little detail is, aside from 2 really expensive Samsung monitors, there really isn't much of any FreeSync 2 monitors in the wild after a year. This seems like a good Rebranding/Differentiation move.

Aside from better requirements, good to see proper HDR implementation focus. Was questioning where are more Freesync 2 monitors, specially aside from really odd ones like ultra wide and curved ones. Glad about the new Pixio monitor.

Eventually it will be great to see those with 1000 nits with a good price.

Yeah, Asus showed off a TRUE HDR monitor with really high brightness unfortunately that was G-Sync only.

Kinda surprises me Higher end apple products dont have freesync or some adaptive sync tech either for their macbooks to save battery or for their all in ones like the iMac.

 

Maybe Freesync HDR is tasty enough for apple to add it to their products?
